Last night a small group of us tasted through the range of Vaudoisey 2017's. They were just terrific. If you are in doubt about the pleasure 2017's Burgundies will provide you need look no further than this small domaine.

I first visited Domaine Christophe Vaudoisey in 2018. I had tasted their 2015's and imported a small amount so was delighted to taste through the full range of 2016's. I was seriously impressed - the wines were pure and fresh displaying all the character of the 2016.

The wines 2016's have come and gone and the 2017 vintage, which arrived just before Christmas, is well on the way to selling out too.

The Vaudoisey family came to Volnay in 1804. In recent years it is Christophe, the eighth generation, who has taken the domaine to new levels. He took over the domaine from his father in 1985, built a new winery in 2008, and from then on the wines have received many accolades from Guide Hachette and other French publications.

In recent years I have seen the quality of Volnay escalate. With prices in the Cote de Nuits always rising Volnay presents a destination for delightful, aromatic wines at joyous prices.

At the top of the tree is Domaine Christophe Vaudoisey who produce a lovely range of wines at yesterday's prices. Their style is all about terroir and as those who grabbed some of the 2016's will know the wines are pure, refined and delightfully aromatic. Just gorgeous expressions of Pinot Noir.

I have written tasting notes for the wines still available so for the next 24 hours I'm offering the new 2017's at a 25% Discount - the same as if you purchased them Pre Arrival. That makes their Premier Cru Volnay and Pommard a mere $87.95 a bottle. Their old vines Monthelie, another commune increasingly on the radar, is only $52.50.

The wines here have pristine fruit with juice and and refinement. For the price they are incredible drinking. This is what Volnay should always taste like!

Premier Crus are rarely this affordable. Pop a mixed case in the cellar and drink over the next decade.

Meursault Les Vireuils 2017
Normal Price $99.95
Special next 24 hours $74.95
34 bottles left

Vaudoisey Meursault label Located high on the slope Les Vireuils is the most north-westerly vineyard of Meursault. It is stony and cool, producing a white wine which is racy and mineral. Other bottlers of this vineyard include Coche-Dury and Roulot.
Darren Harris: More intensity than the Bourgogne with white stonefruit, greengage and some fine oak. Fine and textured on the palate without the heaviness of Meursault of old. A salty lime note adds even more to the interest. Finishes long and stylish with surprising complexity.

Monthelie Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2017
Normal Price $69.95
Special next 24 hours $52.50

Vaudoisey Monthelie label Darren Harris: Very aromatic nose of fresh, spicy red fruits: dark cherries, a touch of marzipan and rocky minerals. This has the zingy citric acidity of the vintage, serious depth and weight from old vines and excellent length: it illustrates how far Monthelie has come in the last decade. Some say it is the poor man's Volnay but this wine competes at all levels. Very well priced and certainly worth looking at.

Vaudoisey Mitans Label
Les Mitans is a 3.98 hectare vineyard on the eastern side of the village. It was first mentioned in the records in 1236. The vineyard has light, stony topsoil and produces one of Volnay's most elegant and delicate expressions.

Darren Harris: Red-black fruit with a hint of violets and liquorice. Considerably more complex than the Volnay Villages yet still retaining a supple, juicy fruit character. The overall impression is of delicacy rather than power with soft tannins and a refined finish. Probably the earliest drinker of the Premier Crus but still in no rush.

Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes 2017
Normal Price $117.50
Special next 24 hours $87.95

Vaudoisey Chenes Label
Clos des Chenes is both large in size and personality. It is regarded as one of Volnay's top premier crus producing a rich and powerful wine with a nose featuring violets, a signature of this vineyard. Concentrated and built to age.
Darren Harris: The big daddy. Deeper and darker in colour than all the other Volnay. A dark fruit nose with spice, flowers and minerally earth. Larger in scale than the other Volnay 1er Crus with serious concentration and many layers. More bottom end, more tannin, more power. Like all Clos des Chenes this wine begs for an extended time in the cellar.
Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets 2017
Normal Price $117.50
Special next 24 hours $87.95
14 bottles left

Vaudoisey Caillerets Label Caillerets is beautifully exposed to the south and east, moderately sloped, and is extremely highly regarded by the locals. As the name suggests the soil is full of small stones which aid drainage and reflect heat.
Darren Harris: A Pretty nose that exhibits red-black fruits - cherry, raspberry and more than a hint of minerals and spice. On the palate this sings with stony, cherry pit notes blended with the mineral character of the soil. Multi layered. Not exceptionally powerful but gorgeously balanced and refined with a sneaky long finish. Classic Volnay! Bravo!

Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins 2017
Normal Price $117.50
Special next 24 hours $87.95
33 bottles left

Vaudoisey Chanlins label Les Chanlins is in the Volnay border. It is an unusually steep and stony site for Pommard with less clay in the soil. The result is an elegant wine that has more than a little Volnay character.

Darren Harris: Deeply coloured. Blue fruits - currants, plums etc with restrained floral notes and spice. The vineyard's location suggests the wine is something of Pommard/Volnay cross and certainly the palate supports the theory. The wine has more earthy notes and slightly higher tannins but still a high degree of finesse. If you like a little more weigh this wine delivers. Like all Pommard it needs a little time to unwind and then will cellar for many years.

Robert Parkers' Wine Advocate: (2015) The NV Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 is non-vintage, but does have some 1927 material in it. This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer. 98 Points
