Ogier produce one of the most interesting ranges of Chateauneuf-du-Pape to be found. They have a 4-Bottle Set titled "Expression de Terroir".
The Set comprises four wines, all with the same blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Cinsault, made from grapes grown on the four different soil types of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Vinification of all wines is the same; traditional with a long maceration, frequent pigeage and pumping over. The wines are aged for 12-14 months in large truncated oak vats.
Only the terroir varies!
Earlier this year I had the opportunity to taste through all four wines with a few clients. What a terrific tasting it was. Just like in Burgundy these wines display unique characters. I am not sure if I had a clear favourite - I feel the best way to purchase is the Set of 4 and try to create the opportunity to taste several wines together. I should also point out the wines are very good value.

The four terroirs are: Eclats Calcaires (limestone rock), Safres (marl), Gres Rouge (degraded red sandstone) and Galet Roules (rounded glacier pebbles). The resulting wines are quite different!
This year they offer the wines both individually and as a Boxed Set of 4. It is a wonderful idea and provides the opportunity to see the effect soil makes on wines that are the same assemblage. Knowledge is king!
All wines are from the exceptional 2016 vintage.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Eclats Calcaires 2016
Normal Price $99.95
Special $84.95

Jeb Dunnuck: The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Eclats Calcaires offers lighter red fruits and rose petal notes, with a real sense of minerality coming through with time in the glass. Medium-bodied, elegant, and silky, count me in as a fan. The blend is 95% Grenache and 5% Cinsault. 93 Points
James Suckling Tasting Report:
This dishes up some wild, flinty funk. Meaty, reductive notes surround ripe, red and blue fruit with plenty of herbs and graphite-like, stony notes. The palate is fluid, supple and layered with ripe tannins, coated with red fruit. Long and even. Drink or hold. 91 Points
Chateauneuf-du-Pape Galets Roules 2016
Normal Price $99.95
Special $84.95
Jeb Dunnuck: Coming all from the famed rolled pebble soils of the appellation, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Galets Roulés is more elegant and silkier than I would have expected, as I always find that this terroir yields more power and richness than elegance. Nevertheless, beautiful notes of kirsch, white flowers, and cherries all flow to a full-bodied, seamless red that's quite close in style to the Eclats Calcaires release
. 92 Points
James Suckling Tasting Report: This is elegant, delivering pristine aromas of wild raspberries, blueberries and mulberries with stony, chalky-mineral accents also holding sway. The palate has a smooth array of plush raspberries and red plums. Really seductive with silky, long tannins. Drink or hold.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Gres Rouge 2016
Normal Price $99.95
Special $84.95
Only 22 bottles left
Jeb Dunnuck: Lots of black fruits, licorice, pepper, and crushed rock notes emerge from the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grès Rouge (red sandstone soils), and it's a richer, powerful wine compared to the other cuvées here. It's mouthfilling and loaded with fruit.
91 Points
James Suckling Tasting Report: This has almost essence-like concentration and ripeness. The assertive cassis and dark plums are ripened to glossy luster. The tannin texture is smooth and open. Drink or hold.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres 2016
Normal Price $99.95
Special $84.95
Jeb Dunnuck: The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Safres shines for its elegance and seamlessness more than its power and richness. Dried red fruits, spice, some dried flowers, and garrigue notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied red that just glides over the palate. A blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Cinsault, it's a beautiful wine.
93 Points
James Suckling Tasting Report: Rich, sweet-raspberry, pepper, herb and fresh, floral allure. The palate is smoothly layered with supple, fine and easy tannins. Long and succulent. Superb, energetic finish. Drink or hold.

Decanter Magazine:
A delightful style of modern Châteauneuf-du-Pape, without sacrificing its warmth and power. Lush in the mouth, it has bright, lightly stewed red cherry and plum fruit and a lick of vanilla. (Drink between 2018-2023). 93 Points
James Suckling Tasting Report:
Very impressive wine with sturdy tannins and plenty of upbeat, dark, punchy fruit on offer. The palate has a very plush, silky edge with ripe, red-plum and blackberry flavors, cast amid assertive, bold but silky tannins. Drink or hold. 93 Points
Drink Rhone - John Livingston-Learmonth:
Shiny dark red colour. A deeply set spicing lies within the bouquet, with airs of black stone fruits, dates, a huskiness that shrouds it rather. The palate bears closely condensed matter, is thick, but keeps moving. The tannins have a darkness that illuminates the close, giving it a spring in its step. It finishes with purpose. This can become interesting and varied. 14.5°. 90,000 b. 80% Gren, 10% Syr, 5% Mourv, 5% Cins. ****(*)
