"The nose is pure and complex, jumping from the glass in a mix of apple, pear, pastry cream, lovely limestone minerality, a touch of fresh almond, vanillin oak and a top note of spring flowers."

it has been interesting to watch the rise of St-Aubin as a commune producing quality white Burgundy. Once considered well behind the big three of Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault, we are now finding St-Aubin nipping at their heels. The commune is known for producing stylish whites with fine acidity and freshness. Jasper Morris MW says "...high-class whites with the steeliness of Puligny-Montrachet but less elegance and perfume in the bouquet". This was written ten years ago and I feel St-Aubin has jumped further ahead since.

Today we offer the St-Aubin 1er Les Perrieres 2017 from Domaine Jean Chartron. The name Perrieres indicates the past presence of a quarry and the residual stones that ensure a mineral liveliness.

The wine has just arrived and for the next week you can buy it at a 15% discount. It is a terrific Premier Cru with some great reviews at a nice price.

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": In the 2016 vintage, the Perrières vineyard was the far more heavily-damaged parcels in St. Aubin from Jean-Michel, and I was very happy to see the wine showing so beautifully this year. The nose is pure and complex, jumping from the glass in a mix of apple, pear, pastry cream, lovely limestone minerality, a touch of fresh almond, vanillin oak and a top note of spring flowers. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, complex and very refined, with a fine core, lovely balance and grip and a long, focused and classy finish. 2018-2045+. 91+ Points
Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2017 Saint-Aubin Les Perrières 1er Cru matures in 25% new oak, has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with scents of green apple, linden, peppermint and sage, very complex and vibrant. The palate is very well balanced and lively, well-judged acidity that cuts through what is a spicy Saint-Aubin with a tang of lemongrass that pops up on the finish. Almost delicious enough to drink now! 2021-2034. 90-92 Points

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": A plot bought from Château Pommard in 2008.Open, fresh the most appealing nose so far. A faint hint of reduction on the nose but not the flavours. Round, a hint of cushion but not at the expense of freshness. Open, intricate and complex - precise and bravo!
Darren Harris: an engaging nose of green apple, stony minerals, creme pattisiere and a backnote of mint. It is elegant and piercing. After the refinement of the nose the palate is surpringly expansive. There is considerable body and intensity with creamy, mineral-inflected fruit with tangy citrus notes. The acid is fresh and really lifts the finish. St-Aubin has come a long way in the last decade.

The ultra-rare Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret ROUGE
Long ago much of Puligny-Montrachet was planted to Pinot Noir. Dr Jules Lavalle's classification of 1855 had three tiers and numerous Puligny vineyards were classified as 1er Cuvee for red wines. Over the decades demand has changed and a recent article by Steen Ohman says that only 0.76 of Puligny's 211.46 hectares are currently planted to red grapes. The BIVB (Bourgogne Wine Board) website says of that a mere 0.05 hectares are Premier Cru! By my calculation that is enough for a single barrel.

In the corner of Jean Chartron's monopoly Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Caillerets are a small number of Pinot Noir vines. Jean-Michel uses these to produce one of Burgundy's rarest wines - Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Caillerets Monopole ROUGE. Interestingly Caillerets was one of Lavalle's 1er Cru red vineyards so it has a history of red production.

A couple of years ago I first tasted the wine at the domaine. It was a big surprise. Whilst Chassagne-Montrachet produces significant volumes of red, I was not aware that Puligny produced any. Especially at Premier Cru level. From the research I have done this appears to be the only Premier Cru Red from Puligny-Montrachet.

Jean-Michel only produces one barrel (the barrel?) of this wine so not only is it unusual but it is extremely rare. Only 288 bottles for the world!

Our annual allocation is only 12 bottles!
Landed Price $250.00
