Bouley Buffet 2016 Volnay header
2016 Premier Cru Volnay - it's almost gone....

In all my years of consuming Burgundy I have never seen Volnay look as good as it does in 2016. The difficult weather conditions and low cropping produced wines of lovely freshness, perfect weight and gorgeous aromatics.

We are fortunate to have a number of wonderful Volnay domaines in our portfolio. Two of the best are Domaine Pierrick Bouley and Domaine Francois Buffet. Their cellars are within a short stone's throw of each other.

The styles are a little different. Bouley's wines are perhaps a little wilder and more powerful. Buffet's show more restraint and elegance. They are great to compare and are both classic Volnay.

Some cuvees have sold out and others are very close. If you are looking for some delicious Burgundy at a reasonable price these Premier Cru Volnay are about as good as it gets.
To entice you further we offer all wines at our original Pre Arrival  discount of 25% until the end of the week.

Mix and match as you please. All wines are in stock for immediate delivery.

Bouley Pierrick Grands Champs label 2016
The Fine Wine Review
10 hl/ha. Bouley owns the only part of the Grands Champs that is classified as premier cru. The nose is powerful with red fruits and some spiciness. The mouth is medium light with elegance, good length and spicy red and dark fruits
90-94 Points

Steen Ohman Winehog.org:
Volnay Les Grands Champs is a 0.24 ha monopole located in Volnay Les Mitans. This seem to come from a slightly hotter place thus offering a very generous side of the 2016 vintage. The nose is fresher than in the 2015 edition of this wine - with plenty of cool and detailed red and dark berries. On the palate vivacious but still quite a weighty fruit - vibrant and lacy/silky - with a nice balancing acidity. This is a quite sexy thing ... will provide some lovely hedonistic moments. 91-93 Points

Domaine Pierrick Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2016
Normal Price $159.50
Special Price $119.50 (Save 25%)

Bouley Pierrick Champans label 2016 The Fine Wine Review: 49 hl/ha. The vines here are 27 years-old, younger than most of the estate's vines in other vineyards, and so were able to better resist. The nose is spicy and stony. The mouth features intense, spicy, deep red fruits. There some structure here. This is not a fleshy Champans, but the tannins on the finish are ripe.
91-94 Points

Domaine Pierrick Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2016
Normal Price $150.95
Special Price $113.50 (Save 25%)

Bouley Pierrick Ronceret label 2016 The Fine Wine Review: A little more volume here: 18.6 hl/ha, or roughly half a crop. No SO2 yet added.  The wine is dense, mineral, and stony with dark fruits. The texture is stony, and the wine has firmness, and good length.
90-93 Points

Steen Ohman Winehog.org The Volnay Ronceret is a step up in both definition and weight. No SO2 used during the vinification at this point (21/06/2017) - so expressive and organic fruit wise. The nose is bursting with detailed fruit - boysenberries, red currant and blackbarries - spiced with a fine earthy minerality. On the palate juicy and vibrant fruit - quite rich and generous - but first and foremost charming with it's vivacious fruit. Perhaps not the most complex wine in the lineup - yet it's one of my favourites even in 2016. 91-92 Points

Domaine Pierrick Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes 2016
Normal Price $156.95
Special Price $117.50 (Save 25%)

Bouley Pierrick Chenes label 2016
The Fine Wine Review: 49 hl/ha. Here, too, the vines are younger than most of the estate's other vines, being only about 30 years-old. The nose is stony and pure. The mouth shows dark fruits and it is sleeker than that of the Champans. The wine shows excellent energy and penetration and one can feel the limestone in the vineyard. The wine also shows good mineraity and length. It should age well.
92-95 Points

Steen Ohman Winehog.org: Volnay Clos de Chenes is a powerhouse and the top cuvée here. The nose brimming with juicy red fruit - airy and delicate - brought forward by a intense earthy minerality. On the palate layers of juicy ripe fruit - very fine energy and freshness. This feels lighter and more airy than the 2015 - as the alcohol level also is somewhat lower - nevertheless it offers a quite impressive level of concentration. This is a truly lovely Volnay in the making - generous, complex and cool. Also this year my favorite wine in the Bouley lineup - chapeau Pierrick. 92-93 Points

Domaine Pierrick Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Santenots 2016

Special Price $113.50 (Save 25%)

Bouley 2016 Santenots label 2 The Fine Wine Review:
26.7 hl/ha. No SO2 yet added. The nose shows spiced blackberries. The mouth is dense with good structure, very deep blackberry fruit, and overall balance. It is a very good representation of wine from the Santenots vineyard.
90-94 Points

Steen Ohman Winehog.org: The Volnay Santenots is a delightful wine in the making. Also vinified without SO2 (June 21st 2017) and is very expressive and cool. The nose is brimming with red and dark fruit - spurred by a fine vibrant minerality. On the palate both generous, complex and offering considerable depth. Perhaps more on the hedonistic side than the Clos de Chene - but still a both serious and charming effort. Make no mistake - it's forward and generous - yet it's not lacking depth and complexity. 92-93 Points
Domaine Pierrick Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Robardelle 2016
Normal Price $148.95
Special Price $111.95 (Save 25%)

Bouley Pierrick Robardell label 2016 The Fine Wine Review:
7.8 hl/ha. This wine is dense, chewy, and saline with dark fruit. It shows less finesse than the Monthélie 1er Cru, though. 88-92 Points

Steen Ohman Winehog.org:
The Volnay Robardelle 1er cru is one of my favourites here - from a terroir located in the lower southern end of the appellation. The nose is brimming with red fruit ... cool and quite refined with a nice chalky note - or at least so it seems. On the palate juicy and generous red fruit .. very charming indeed. 88-90 Points

Domaine Francois Buffet Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Rougeotte Monopole 2016
Normal Price $153.95
Special Price $115.50 (Save 25%)

Buffet Rougeotte label 96 Jasper Morris MW: All destemmed this year. Very pure refined purple with a delicious floral nose, very exciting. Quite rich ripe fruit, dark raspberry, maybe some chocolate, a fine thread of acidity and then some quite firm tannins to finish.
90 Points

Darren Harris: Buffet's Monopole is just half a hectare in size. More aromatic and layered than Le Village with strong notes of raspberry and minerals. The palate builds in the middle with juicy fruit followed by a reasonably firm finish.
24 Feb 2019: Tasted blind. Intense nose of dark fruits and minerals with a back note of fine herbs. The palate is long and complex with texture and freshness. A little more savoury than Taillepieds. A most interesting Volnay.

Buffet Champans Label Jasper Morris MW:
25 to 30% whole bunch which is now his norm. Vibrant purple and the whole bunch does lift the nose. Good firm fruit on the palate, raspberry and strawberry while the chocolate is still lurking. Finer, more elegant finish than his Clos de la Rougeotte. 92 Points

Darren Harris: 24 Feb 2019: Tasted blind. I thought this was the Clos des Chenes. The darkest fruit of the lineup. Some florals over juicy, complex fruit with the slightest hint of fresh, stony earth. The mid palate is quite powerful, gorgously textured and layered with a fine tannic spine. Old vines! Serious Volnay with the potential to age for a decade or more.
Domaine Francois Buffet Volnay 1er Cru Le Village 2016

Special Price $115.50 (Save 25%)

Buffet Champans Label Darren Harris: Refined nose of wild strawberry, stones and flowers. The most elegant 1er Cru here with lifted aromatics and a very supple palate. Juicy and very tasty.
This builds in the glass and has a huge aromatic nose. It is not the most complex wine here but it is classic Volnay and absolutely seductive. It is worth having!

Hospices Volnay Blondeau 2016 label

Hospices de Beaune Volnay 1er Cru Cuvee Blondeau 2016
Last 2 cases

Blondeau is named after Francois Blondeau, a serial benefactor, who amongst other donations provided the bells for the Hospices de Charite in 1811 (which can still be heard today), restored the church in Volnay, built a school and finally donated all his vineyards in Volnay and Pommard.

It is an assemblage from the Premier Crus Champans, Taillipieds, Ronceret and Mitans, most of which have great vine age.

The elevage was completed by Albert Bichot.

Darren Harris:
From barrel: Deep, saturated purple. Quite expressive even at this early stage with cool but intense spicy red and black fruits. Nice fruit volume on the palate with underlying acidity providing freshness. Like all top Volnay it has a sense of style; concentration without excess weight. It is early days but this has all the hallmarks of a classic Volnay from great vineyards. It will interesting to follow in barrel over the next year.

From bottle: this has now been bottled for more than 6 months. It still has the same saturated colour with a high level of spice and serious fruit weight. I also see violets, minerals and bitter cherry. No doubt the frosts of 2016 affected the cropping level and have ensured the fruit here is deep, textured and complex. 2016 was an outstanding vintage for Volnay in general and this is certainly one of the most serious cuvees I have tasted. Some patience will be required but this is going to live up to the promise it showed in barrel and become one exceptional Volnay.

A-F Gris Richebourg

Domaine A-F Gros Richebourg 2010
3 bottles available

From a fine private cellar we are pleased to offer 3 bottles of the superb Domaine A-F Gros Richebourg. The bottles come from an original 6-Pack.

All Burgundy lovers will know just how difficult (not to mention expensive) it has become to buy the tete de cuvees on release.

This is an opportunity to secure a highly rated wine from one of Burgundy's best vineyards from the superb 2010 vintage. It is a wine you will be proud to own.

We've checked values internationally and these bottles are very fairly priced.

Burghound: There is enough wood to notice framing the still reticent, fresh and exceptionally cool red and dark berry fruit that exhibits a broad range of spice and floral notes. There is equally good freshness and a wonderful verve to the broad-shouldered, dense and extract-rich flavors where an intense minerality surfaces on the palate staining, focused and linear finish that delivers simply terrific length. This harmonious though notably firm effort offers crystalline purity and should abundantly reward 15 to 20 years of cellar time, perhaps even a bit more. In a word, impressive. 95 Points
Stephen Tanzer:
Good bright, full red. Crushed berries, stony minerality and a menthol topnote on the nose. Creamy, sweet and full on entry, then extremely backward in the middle, showing less obvious fruit than the Clos Vougeot but great delicacy of texture for all its volume. The wine's superb, slowly mounting finish, featuring noble tannins, suggests a long and graceful evolution. 95 Points
Jancis Robinson: This has the extra something you look for from grand crus - a matchless level of complexity in the flavour. Very drinkable now. Eloquent. Refreshing, perfumed, sophisticated.
