Wines have arrived in Australia
Domaine Fernand and Laurent Pillot comprises just 15 hectares of vines located primarily in Chassagne-Montrachet. In addition to the vines in Chassagne the domaine has holdings in Pommard and Volnay as a result of of the marriage of Laurent to Marie-Anne. Despite the small size of the domaine their holdings include many of Chassagne-Montrachet's best Premier Cru sites.

Pillot Morgeots Bottle
The Domaine is included in Remington Norman's tome "The Great Domaines of Burgundy". Norman says "The cream of the cellar is undoubtedly the splendid range of Chassagnes. Lightest of the premier crus is Vergers, a crisp fresh wine for a vineyard with little soil and hard rock underneath. In such an extended, diverse vineyard as Morgeot, location has an important bearing on quality. Laurent has plots in Petit Clos and Fairendes, both with relatively fine soils, in contrast to the heavier, richer ground of low-lying sectors. The wines in Petit Clos give a wine of richness but also vivacity whereas the older plants in Fairendes contribute depth and finesse. Denser and richer is Vide-Bourse, a tiny premier cru adjoining Batard-Montrachet, which gives a fine wine, a little more backward when young but with excellent ageing potential. Noblest of all is the Grandes Ruchottes. To Laurent's surprise, every year, whatever the weather conditions, the vines give little bunches of small berries. The wine is ripe and powerful with mouth-filling substance and considerable length, yet greater finesse than the other premier crus. It essence, this is Laurent's grand cru and a worthy testament to his skill."
Laurent's whites are simply delicious and this is a great address to compare the vineyards of Chassagne.

William Kelley of the Wine Advocate says "One of the Côte de Beaune's underrated addresses, readers looking for keenly priced white and red Burgundy of high quality would do well to acquaint themselves with Domaine Fernand & Laurent Pillot. Laurent Pillot has been working the soils since 2012 and fine-tuning élevage practices, now bottling under Diam corks to ensure the reliable evolution of his whites in bottle. What's more, with a well-appointed new winery in Chassagne-Montrachet's ZAC - opposite Pierre-Yves Colin's - and the next generation beginning to take a role in the estate, the future looks very bright. The domaine's 14.8 hectares of vines are divided into fully 63 parcels, with many prime sites in Chassagne but also enviable holdings in Pommard that formerly constituted the once-celebrated Domaine Pothier-Rieusset, to which Laurent's wife Anne-Marie is the heiress."
The wines have arrived in Australia and will be delivered to us in the coming week. There's not a lot left so don't miss this opportunity to secure some delicious white Burgundy from a top vintage.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Champgains  2017
Landed Price $142.50
Pre Arrival Price $120.95
9 bottles left

Pillot Champgains Burghound:
Relatively firm reduction supplants the fruit today so I would advise allowing this some time to breathe first. More interesting are the attractively textured and sleeker if slightly less concentrated medium weight flavors that display good delineation on the solidly complex and persistent finale. 90 Points

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot 2017

Pre Arrival Price $120.95

Pillot Morgeot label
Burghound: An expressive nose features pungent aromas of resin, petrol and a mix of various white orchard fruit, all of which is trimmed in subtle wood nuances. There is fine volume to the muscular, powerful and serious middle weight plus flavors that terminate in a moderately rustic and sneaky long finish. 90 Points

Jancis Robinson: Saline quality and lots of drive with a hint of sweet fruit too. Another very forward wine, but with some undertow that suggests a good future. Drink 2019-2028. 16.5+/20 Points

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Fairendes 2017
Landed Price $142.50
Pre Arrival Price $120.95
6 bottles left

Pillot Fairendes Label Wine Advocate - William Kelley: One of the high points of this year's portfolio is the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Fairendes, a pretty wine that wafts from the glass with notes of green orchard fruit, citrus blossom, mandarin and pastry cream. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, elegant and pure, with good concentration, tangy acids and a pure, chalky finish.
92 Points
Burghound: A slightly more elegant nose is similar but with more citrus and floral influences. Once again there is excellent volume to the somewhat finer and nicely concentrated flavors that possess excellent power and punch if perhaps not quite the same depth on the equally persistent finale. 90 Points

Chassagne-Montrachet 2017

Pillot Chassagane Villages label From two principal parcels - La Bergerie (on the Puligny side) and Le Chene (below the 1er Cru La Maltroie)

Pillot's wine captures the essence of Chassagne - white stone fruit, citrus and great mouthfeel.

Delicious now but will gain complexity with 2-3 years in the cellar.
Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets 2017
Landed Price $166.95
Pre Arrival Price $141.95
20 bottles left

Pillot Caillerets label
Burghound: A moderately exotic nose displays notes of pineapple, melon, lychee and lemongrass. The sleeker and more fine delineated if less powerful medium weight flavors exude a fine bead of minerality on the succulent, dry and sneaky long finish. This needs to develop a bit more depth but the underlying material appears to be present such that should reasonably occur. 91 Points

Wine Advocate - William Kelley: The 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets is lovely, wafting from the glass with aromas of confit citrus, lemon oil, buttered apples and pastry cream. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and gourmand, with a textural attack that segues into a fleshy mid-palate and saline, mineral finish. A warm but stony site, this is typically among the domaine's earliest-harvested parcels. 91 Points

Puligny-Montrachet Noyers Brets 2017

Pillot Noyers Brets
Wine Advocate - William Kelley: Aromas of green apple, toasted nuts, white flowers and almond paste introduce the 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Noyers Brets, a medium to full-bodied wine that's elegantly textural and nicely concentrated, with succulent acids and a long, pure finish. 90 Points

St-Aubin 1er Cru Sentier du Clou 2017

Pillot St-Aubin label Wine Advocate - William Kelley: The 2017 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sur Le Sentier Du Clou reveals notes of crisp orchard fruit, white flowers and wet stones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and open-knit palate with tangy acids and a pure, stony finish. 90 Points

Chartron Gate
Domaine Jean Charton St-Aubin Premier Crus from 2017
It has been interesting to watch the rise of St-Aubin as a commune producing quality white Burgundy. Once considered well behind the big three of Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault, we are now finding St-Aubin nipping at their heels. The commune is known for producing stylish whites with fine acidity and freshness. Jasper Morris MW says "...high-class whites with the steeliness of Puligny-Montrachet but less elegance and perfume in the bouquet". This was written ten years ago and I feel St-Aubin has jumped further ahead since.

Domaine Jean Chartron produce two 1er crus from St-Aubin - Les Perrieres and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.

They are quite different is style reflecting their terroir.

We have small quantities of both available from the lovely 2017 vintage.

Chartron St-Aubin Perrieres label
St Aubin 1er Cru Perrieres 2017

The name Perrieres indicates the past presence of a quarry and the residual stones that ensure a mineral liveliness.

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": In the 2016 vintage, the Perrières vineyard was the far more heavily-damaged parcels in St. Aubin from Jean-Michel, and I was very happy to see the wine showing so beautifully this year. The nose is pure and complex, jumping from the glass in a mix of apple, pear, pastry cream, lovely limestone minerality, a touch of fresh almond, vanillin oak and a top note of spring flowers. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, complex and very refined, with a fine core, lovely balance and grip and a long, focused and classy finish. 2018-2045+. 91+ Points

Wine Advocate - Neal Martin:
The 2017 Saint-Aubin Les Perrières 1er Cru matures in 25% new oak, has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with scents of green apple, linden, peppermint and sage, very complex and vibrant. The palate is very well balanced and lively, well-judged acidity that cuts through what is a spicy Saint-Aubin with a tang of lemongrass that pops up on the finish. Almost delicious enough to drink now! 2021-2034. 90-92 Points
Darren Harris: an engaging nose of green apple, stony minerals, creme pattisiere and a backnote of mint. It is elegant and piercing. After the refinement of the nose the palate is surpringly expansive. There is considerable body and intensity with creamy, mineral-inflected fruit with tangy citrus notes. The acid is fresh and really lifts the finish. St-Aubin has come a long way in the last decade.

Chartron Dent NV label

St Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 2017
7 bottles left

From above Chevalier-Montrachet this rocky vineyard produces magnificent wine.

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The 2017 Murgers des Dents de Chien from Domaine Chartron is outstanding and was really singing at the time of my November visit. The bouquet delivers lovely purity and complexity in its blend of pear, white peach, crème patissière, a complex base of chalky soil tones, bee pollen, almond and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and a touch more reserved in personality than the Perrières, with a superb core of fruit, fine soil inflection and a long, zesty and very promising finish. Excellent juice. 2021-2045+. 92 Points

Wine Advocate - Neal Martin:
The 2017 Saint-Aubin les Murgers des Dents de Chien 1er Cru shows a bit of reduction tasting it directly from vat, although it gradually dissipates to reveal cheeky hints of mint chocolate that combine seamlessly with the malic aromas. The palate is very well balanced with quite a phenolic opening. There is commendable depth here, quite grippy for a white Burgundy with lemongrass lining the finish. Excellent. 2020-2032. 90-92 Points

Darren Harris: A classy bouquet offers up a complex mélange of pear, peach, citrus and chalky soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep and full bodied with more weight than the St-Aubin 1er Cru Perrieres from the same stable. Saline and mineral it finishes with a lashing of acidity and serious length. Another great example from this super vineyard.
