Our Malconsorts Dinner last Thursday showed what a wonderful vineyard this is.

The nine vintages tasted (2009-2017) displayed a consistency of style that was remarkable. It was a great exercise.

My highlights were 2016 and 2010, both wines with spicy aromatics, complexity and sublime balance.

With the wines showing so well it was not a surprise that we sold much of the 2016 that has just arrived. The wine was so good numerous clients purchased a second time.

All of the Magnums sold and we are now down to the last 29 bottles of the 2016. If you don't have some I urge you to act quickly. The wine is simply fantastic.

Some background....

Les Malconsorts is an exceptional 1er Cru. Being located alongside La Tache and less than 400 metres from Romanee-Conti it comes as no surprise. Domaine du Clos Frantin owns a substantial 1.76 ha parcel with a vine age of around 40 years. Jasper Morris MW says "Aux Malconsorts was first taken out of scrubland and planted with vines in 1610, relatively late for this part of the Cote. Nonetheless it is an exceptional vineyard, one of my three favourite premier crus along with Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses and Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St-Jacques."
It is one of our best selling wines every year.

James Suckling MW:
Beautiful crushed roses with an array of fresh raspberries and red cherries, as well as light mocha and oak spices in the background. The palate has excellent tannin maturity and depth. A bold, explosive finish. This is exceptional. This elegant vintage has delivered a wine with real clarity and detail. But still needs some time. Try from 2024. 94-95 Points

Tim Atkin MW: The Bichot holdings run to 1.75 hectares and cover both the upper and lower parts of the Premier Cru. This is a sturdy, almost austere expression of the site with serious tannins, dense, chewy black fruits and a touch of mint. Very well made, but needs considerable time in bottle. 2028-38. 94 Points

Jasper Morris MW:
Significantly rich deep purple. A wonderful richness of flavour sweeps across the palate. It is still held in check a bit by the wood. A solid, rich, firm wine at the finish, with impressive density. 94 Points
Burghound:
(from a whopping 1.75 ha parcel). A relatively deeply pitched nose offers plenty of both floral and spice elements along with notes of plum, dark cherry and a touch of Asian-style tea. As is usually the case there is excellent volume and a taut muscularity to the sappy broad-shouldered flavors that flash superb depth and persistence. Note well though that this classic example is definitely built-to-age and is going to need at least most of a decade to be approachable. Recommended. SWEET SPOT WINE 2031+. 92-94 Points

Darren Harris: It was fascinating to watch this unfurl in the glass. Initially served a little cold but as the wine warmed the floral, fruit and spice characters rose from the glass. Plum, dark cherry, Asian spice, roses, all very fresh and pure, wafted from the glass. The wine has the seductive juice of the 2016 vintage and a hint of exoticism found in the vineyard. it is captivating. Whilst a delight to taste now it is easy to see just how good this will be in 5 to 10 years. The balance is impeccable and the finish long and finely structured. One of the best Frantin Malconsorts of the last decade.

Domaine du Clos Frantin Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts 2017
The latest vintage from Bichot's Domaine du Clos Frantin estate - the largest owners of this great vineyard.

The 2017 is fine and refined. Tasted last Thursday the 2017 had the most wonderful aromatic nose and a palate to die for. If there was ever a ballet dancer from Malconsorts this is it!
James Suckling Tasting ReportA fragrant and complex Vosne-Romanée with deep black-cherry and floral notes on the nose. Then comes the rich and very elegant palate, the tannins almost completely masked by the fruit, until you reach the very powerful yet polished finish. 94 Points

Jasper Morris MW: Dense purple colour, the nose is much stricter than the Amoureuses but just as tense. If anything there is greater concentration here but the wine is shaped differently, with a firmer stricter structure at the back, through the fruit flows over the tannins. There is just enough acidity. 93 Points

Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report: 1.75 ha from 6 sandier parts and lower down heavier soil - the bottom left which is more sandy and the rest which is more clay - there can be 3 days difference in maturity between these two sectors - 'clearly different wines too, the lower part more massive less complex.' The only area in 2017 where they did a green harvest.
Hmm - not a big nose today, but one with a lot of inviting, faintly spiced complexity - true to its roots. Fuller, more depth, more complexity - certainly more structural vs the Amoureuses, but also much more complex - accessibly complex - today. Super finishing depth of flavour. Ooh that's good! - Excellent wine.
