The World of Fine Wine describes Clos de la Roche as a generally underrated cru. We agree. In the hands of top winemakers this Grand Cru produces tremendous dark-fruited wines that combine structure, power, finesse and complexity.
It has more charm and less tannin than Bonnes-Mares to the south and is more vibrant and less earthy than many Gevrey Grand Crus from the north. In a way the best of both worlds. And at a good price.
Albert Bichot's Clos de la Roche is a wine that has been on my radar for a few vintages. The 2015 and 2016 won Gold Medals at the International Wine Challenge and now the 2017 follows in their illustrious footsteps with a wonderful review and a score of 96 from The World of Fine Wine.
It is not so much about the score as the wording of the review which is below. I don't know how you could read the review and not be tempted! Especially at today's Black Friday Sale Price.

The World of Fine Wine:
A consistently outstanding cuvee here, with a perfectly judged 25% whole-bunch and 50% new oak (as for most of the grand crus here this year). A luminous mid-ruby. Great complexity and depth on the nose, a lovely light whiff of white pepper from the stems. Very graceful on the palate, despite the depth and intensity, at once mineral and succulent, a really sublime texture, more cashmere than silk, so densely but finely layered, thanks to abundant but beautifully managed tannins; perfectly seamless, thrillingly long. A brilliant rendition of this generally underrated cru. 96 Points

Jasper Morris MW:
Dense red purple. The nose is discreet, but the quality of the fruit is superb on the palate, quite vibrant while respecting the raw silk and blue fruit style of the appellation. Very good fruit acid balance. Excellent aftertaste both in fruit quality and persistence. 94 Points

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report":
Ooh - now that's very nice - a nose that's very open, forward, faintly spiced and fresh - oh-so inviting too! Supple, depth of fresh flavour - flavour that grows in intensity, vibrant flavour - this is always a cuvée that shows well here - no different in 2017 - it's excellent!
