Centuries of history in the bottle....

Today is Hospices de Beaune auction day in Burgundy. Save $50 a bottle on the majestic Hospices de Beaune Volnay 1er Cru Cuvee Blondeau 2016.

On the third Sunday of November the Hospices de Beaune hosts its annual wine auction. The auction comprises barrels of wine produced by the Hospices from vineyards donated over the centuries.

2016 was the 156th auction and as always it was a truly momentous event that attracted much media attention.

The tasting of the barrels a few days days prior is also a super experience. The wines are only a month or two old but tasting through the 40-odd different cuvees gives you a great feeling for the vintage.

In 2016 I decided it was time to indulge myself with the purchase of a barrel again (having not done so since 2011). My choice of cuvee was the Volnay 1er Cru Cuvee Blondeau.

Cuvee Blondeau is named after Francois Blondeau, a serial benefactor, who amongst other donations provided the bells for the Hospices de Charite in 1811 (which can still be heard today), restored the church in Volnay, built a school and finally donated all his vineyards in Volnay and Pommard.

It is an assemblage from the Premier Crus Champans, Taillipieds, Ronceret and Mitans, most of which have great vine age.

The elevage was completed by Albert Bichot, who for years have been the biggest buyers at the Hospices auction.

For the next 72 hours we provide the chance to buy this wine at a $50.00 a bottle discount.

Hospices Volnay Blondeau 2016 label Darren Harris: From barrel: Deep, saturated purple. Quite expressive even at this early stage with cool but intense spicy red and black fruits. Nice fruit volume on the palate with underlying acidity providing freshness. Like all top Volnay it has a sense of style; concentration without excess weight.

It is early days but this has all the hallmarks of a classic Volnay from great vineyards. It will interesting to follow in barrel over the next year.

From bottle: this has now been bottled for more than 6 months. It still has the same saturated colour with a high level of spice and serious fruit weight. I also see violets, minerals and bitter cherry. No doubt the frosts of 2016 affected the cropping level and have ensured the fruit here is deep, textured and complex. 2016 was an outstanding vintage for Volnay in general and this is certainly one of the most serious cuvees I have tasted. Some patience will be required but this is going to live up to the promise it showed in barrel and become one exceptional Volnay.

Felettig Gevrey

Domaine Gilbert et Christine Felettig Gevrey-Chambertin La Justice 2017
Arriving next month

The Gevrey lieu-dit La Justice is an interesting vineyard. In theory it is located on the wrong side of the road - east of the D974. However, a fault line allows a base of limestone to come into play and the sandy top soil allows excellent drainage.

The vineyard has been highly regarded for centuries and is considered one of the finest lieux-dits in Gevrey-Chambertin. It is a very old vineyard once belonging to the Abbot of Cluny, Lord of Gevrey, who exercised supreme power over this land. La Justice comes from the latin Jurisdictio - the right to administer justice. The wine produced is frequently of Premier Cru quality with dark fruit and mineral-infused flavours from the limestone. It has an elegance with the power delivered by the best wines of Gevrey-Chambertin.

Domaine Felettig own parcels totalling 0.39 hectares which produce a wine that is always complex and interesting. John Gilman describes the wine as "quite clearly of premier cru quality". It is certainly a favourite of those in the know.

Jasper Morris MW:
Gilbert notes that La Justice always needs to be picked early as you have to watch the ripening. The yield in 2017 of 40 hl/ha is a lot for this vineyard, which they have made since 1995, but he feels that such generosity has done the wine good. Fullish red purple, with a richer softer strawberry nose with a few darker more animal notes alongside. A touch firm up front, but there is a really engaging vibrant yet ripe red fruit behind. Excellent length, very promising. Tasted: November 2018. 90-92 Points
