Varoilles 2016 Last Header
A stunning range of 2016's that you should not ignore
Our Domaine des Varoilles Dinner at Noir in August further reinforced my opinion that this is one domaine that should be on every Burgundy lovers radar.
Rarely have I seen a lineup of wines so consistent in quality. The two Villages monopoles were just brilliant and then we saw a stairway leading upwards to the Grand Crus. Magnificent!
All of the wines have complexity and drive. The 2016 fruit is simply superb and the oak management so classy. The Villages wines drink like Premier Crus and the Premier Crus have Grand Cru intensity.
If you have not purchased any of these wines I really do urge to do so before our second shipment sells out.

Named after a 12th century Premier Cru vineyard, the Domaine des Varoillles has expanded over the years to cover 10 hectares in 8 special appellations.

The meticulous Gilbert Hammel is in charge of the vineyards which include 4 Monoples in Gevrey-Chambertin! The Premier Cru Monopoles Clos des Varoilles and La Romanee lie high in the cool combe near Lavaux St-Jacques and Clos St-Jacques and express a beauty and elegance seldom seen in Gevrey-Chambertin.

Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Couvent Monopole 2016
Normally $145.95
Special $123.95
22 bottles available

Varoilles Couvent label
A half hectare Monopole.
Graceful, with noble tannins, tender and refined, the Clos du Couvent expresses fidelity to its terroir in fruity touches, dominated by cassis and blackberry.

Darren Harris: The domaine's "home block" Monopole located within the domaine's walls alongside the old convent on the property. The palest of the wines. An explosive nose of red fruit which is delightfully sweet and spicy. The palate is elegant but intense and utterly delicious. There is much of that lovely 2016 juiciness making this is a Gevrey wine with the mouthfeel I would expect from Chambolle.
Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Meix des Ouches Monopole 2016
Normally $167.50
Special $142.50
21 bottles available
Varoilles Clos du Meix
A 1 hectare Monopole. Beautifully located this wine combines liveliness and tannins with fine aromas of fresh wild berries and red fruits. With five years age becomes velvety smooth.

Jancis Robinson:
Monopole. Mid purplish crimson. Dark fruits and some oak sweetness are the first impression. Quite oaky but not excessive at this stage. Same oak sweetness on the palate and plenty of dark fruit, the tannins smooth and deep. Velvety and sweet-fruited to a long finish. Generous and rounded. 16.5/20

Darren Harris:
Just bottled. Red-garnet colour. Plenty of aromatics - red-black fruits, a little liquorice, a touch of minerally earth. Fresh and bright with a fullness in the mouth. The tannins are fine and well coated leaving a lovely sense of roundness and balance.
Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet 2016

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Romanee Monopole 2016
Normally $229.95
Special $195.50
19 bottles available
Varoilles Romanee Label
A 1.06 hectare Monopole. With a great finesse, generous and opulent in mellow tannins, this premier cru cleverly mixes black fruits with the scent of humus and smoke to compose a voluptuous bouquet. Four to five years in the cellar to blossom.

Jancis Robinson: Monopole. Mid cherry red. Again that attractive dusty/mineral nose, maybe whole-bunch influence, more noticeable than on the above. Super-moreish and extremely fine tannin texture. Finesse and harmony with a mouth-watering finish17/20

Darren Harris:
A super monopole from high in the combe that influences the best 1er Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. La Romanee is stony and south facing but the forest provides some shade and ensures a cool wine with great finesse.
60 year old vines. 100% destemmed. Very different to Champonnet served before it. A gorgeously restrained nose of cherry, earth and iron. The palate has crunchy red-black fruits and fine mineral notes that fan out in in the mouth. The tannins start late and provides a long and elegant finish. This is a wine of considerable finesse and style.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos des Varoilles Monopole 2016
Normally $229.95
Speical $195.50
24 bottles available

Darren Harris:
Immediately south of La Romanee, high in the combe. Clos des Varoilles in a significant monopole of almost 6 hectares that was planted in the second half of the 13th century by the Chapter of Langres before it was dispossessed during the French Revolution.
45-65 year old vines, 40% new oak. Deeper and richer than La Romanee with more breadth and complexity. Darker fruits with some liquorice-scented floral notes and a hint of wildness. There is a fine spine of acidity running through the wine which ensures, despite some weight, it remains balanced and captivating.  A Premier Cru to add to your must buy list.
Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016
Normally $378.50
Special $283.95
13 bottles available
Varoilles Charmes label
A 3/4 hectare holding. Charmes-Chambertin combines the proverbial vigor and robustness of Chambertin with elegance and finesse. Intensity of aromas, with animal scents, well-established tannic structure and power are the hallmarks of this grand-cru.

Jancis Robinson: Deep cherry red. Deep in sweet fruit and oak sweetness. Smooth, velvet tannins and has plenty of freshness under the (currently) very obvious oak. Needs time for the oak to recede but it has plenty of stuffing to do that.

Darren Harris:
Charmes-Chambertin remains a bit of an enigma. It is by no means the most popular Grand Cru of Gevrey but when it is good, it can be very, very good. Domaine des Varoilles Charmes-Chambertin is a supremely impressive wine. It is bigger and much deeper than all of the Premier Crus. The nose displays dark fruits, smoke and minerals. On the palate there is more with dark chocolate and a rich, creamy texture. There is new oak (60% used here) and some powerful but not coarse tannins. Needs some time in the cellar. Great Charmes!

solitude constanza 2015 label
Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Cornelia Constanza MAGNUM 2015
2 available
100% old vine Grenache.
Wine Spectator: This has great energy from the start, with notes of bay leaf, warm brick and juniper leading the way, backed by a solid core of red currant, raspberry and plum coulis flavors. The long finish lets sanguine and iron accents flow through while still leaving plenty of room for the fruit. Best from 2020 through 2035. 96 Points

Solitude vine de la Solitude label
Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vin de la Solitude MAGNUM 2016
3 Magnums left

One of the most exciting Rhone releases of the last decade.
Vinous - Josh Raynolds:
Brilliant ruby. A suave, expansive bouquet evokes fresh dark berries, candied flowers and smoky minerals, backed by a hint of peppery spices. In an elegant yet concentrated style, offering seamless black raspberry and spicecake flavors that show very good depth as well as clarity. Juicy acidity adds lift and definition to a very long, floral-accented finish framed by velvety, harmonious tannins. 93-95 Points

13 bottles available
Save $100.00
A small 2.04 hectare vineyard alongside the upper portion of Clos St-Jacques.
Darren Harris:
Deep colour. Nose of cool, red fruits with a mineral tang. Elegant, yet intense palate with fresh red fruits; currant, cherry, a cool floral note and lots of minerals. Not particularly earthy like many Gevreys. The overall impression is a wine of elegance with considerable power lurking below.  Fine and punchy. A lovely wine.

Drouhin-Laroze Closeau label

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Au Closeau 2015
3 bottles left

Tim Atkin MW: Au Closeau is a Drouhin-Laroze monopoly on the Morey-St-Denis side of Gevrey located just below Mazis-Chambertin. It's a glossy, perfumed, eminently drinkable red showing the stylish oak integration that's part of the new approach at the domaine. Rich, exotic, yet underpinned by acidity and tannins. 2022-29. 94 Points

Lignier Combottes Label 96

Domaine Georges Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Combottes 2015

Almost surrounded b y Grand Crus Les Combottes is an exceptional Premier Cru.

Tim Atkin MW: A Premier Cru that's "a bit more than a Premier Cru," according to Benoit Stehly, this is tucked between two Grands Crus yet is something of a below-the-radar wine. Smoky and intense, with lovely precision and focus supported by textured tannins and lingering acidity. 2022-30. 94 Points

Castagnier Cazetiers Label

Jerome Castagnier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2015
6 bottles available

Darren Harris: What is it I like so much about Les Cazetiers?
It is the cool spicy fruit.
The 2015 from Castagnier is full of cherries, crucnhy raspberry, ground spice, earth and most of all minerals. The vineyard is high on the slope at the end of the Combe so it is cool and driven by the limestone in the soil and the cool air, not clay like lower lying 1er Crus.
This is 2015 so there is plenty of flesh providing mid palate texture but it is long and fine. Cazetiers is a serious vineyard that deserves even more respect than it it receives. Easily the quality of many Charmes-Chambertin Grand Crus at half the price.

marchand-grillot perrier label
Domaine Marchand-Grillot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perriere 2016

Darren Harris: Located below Mazis-Chambertin Marchand-Grillot's Perrieres always sings of its terroir. We have layered flavours of cherries and plums but most of all cool stonyness on the nose. The palate is zippy, fresh and focused with deep flavours and a sense of relative lightness. The tannins are very fine and coat the fruit. A tremendous wine in 2016.
