Last Tuesday a small group of us got together to taste the 2016's from Domaine Bertagna. It was a terrific exercise and showed just how far this domaine has come along in recent years. The highlights for me were the Premier Crus with each wine exhibiting distinct terroir, yet displaying the intensity and complexity this domaine achieves from their old vines.
My favourite (as I expected) was the Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perriere Monopole 2016. It is simply an outstanding wine by any measure. That said it was closely followed by the Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2016.

With Le Musigny directly to the west, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses to the north and Clos Vougeot to the south it is no wonder Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perriere produces a special wine.
Vougeot is dominated by the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru which is 50.96 hectares in size. There are only 11.68 hectares of Premier Cru vineyards in Vougeot and 2.2 ha of those are the Clos de la Perriere, a monopole of Domaine Bertagna. The vineyard name comes from the former quarry belonging to the Cistercian monks, originally used to construct the Abbey, the Clos de Vougeot and Chateau de Gilly. So not only do we have great location but a wonderful history to the site.
The outstanding 2016 Clos de la Perriere is available at a 15% Discount. The wine is in stock for immediate delivery.

Darren Harris: A monopoly of the domaine measuring a substantial 2.2 hectares in size. The vineyard is surrounded on three sides by Musigny, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses and Clos Vougeot. Complex nose displaying wild strawberry, violets and an array of spices and herbs. Multi-layered with an enticing note of musk in the background. Texturally interesting with a long, refined finish displaying minerals and fine grained tannin. This is always one of the most intellectual wines at Bertagna that seems to combine a little of the three serious vineyards that surround it.

Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss: This vineyard, wholly owned by the producer, lies next to the north end of Clos de Vougeot. Old vines and low yields give the wine a dense texture. The ripe, smoky character is dark, firm and needs several years more aging. Drink from 2024. 93 Points

Bertagna Beaux Monts Label Darren Harris: From a 0.92 hectare holding. Deep colour. Spicy Vosne nose with cherries, violets and considerable five spice. Complex and multi-layerd with floral elements alongside the spice. Sleek and concentrated in the mouth with excellent presence. Finishes extremely long with the discreet but present tannins buried beneath the fruit. Very good indeed.

Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss: From one of the premier cru vineyards that surround the cluster of legendary Grand Crus in Vosne-Romanée, this opulent wine is rich with perfumed red fruits, with hints of wood aging showing in the smoky character. Acidity gives freshness to a wine that needs to age. Drink from 2024. 94 Points
Fine Wine Geek: They own 0.92 hectares (2.27 acres) in this vineyard which is near Echezeaux. Grapes are 70% destemmed. They do a controlled fermentation for at least 3 weeks. This wine is aged in French oak barrels, 50% new, for 15 to 18 months.] More muted nose. Really rich, long, and complex. Great potential. Recently went through malo. So intense and extracted. Needs a lot of time. 10 years, I think. 94-95 Points

Bertagna Petit Vougeot label Quite different in style to the Clos de la Perriere with aromatics that remind of Chambolle-Musigny which is immediately alongside.

Darren Harris: Alongside Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses, Bertagna own a sizeable 1.26 chunk of Les Petits Vougeot. Deep red. Nose of red fruits, smoke, minerals with a touch of vanilla spice and liquorice. There is a very appealing roundness to the palate which carries to the long and full finish.

Alvear 1927 PX Halves label
Alvear Pedro Ximinez Solera 1927
The perfect Christmas tipple!
Bodegas Alvear was founded in 1729 and to this day remains under the control of the same family. They own 124 hectares of vineyards in the Montilla-Moriles appellation of Spain. Anyone who visits the area recognizes the incredible white soils, which are dominated by chalk/limestone and the key to the great acids these products possess.

Alvear speclialize in Pedro Ximinez, particularly the rich, intense, sweet wine that the grape variety produces. This Pedro Ximinez is a solera wine begun in 1927. Occasionally wine is drawn off and the younger wines stored in the upper parts of the tier of casks are systematically blended with the more mature wine in the casks below.
Robert Parkers's Wine Advocate: (2015) The NV Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 is non-vintage, but does have some 1927 material in it. This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer. 98 Points
Normally $59.50 a 375ml bottle

Salon 2007 mood
Champagne Salon Cuvee S 2007
Last 2 bottles
World's best Champagne house!
Wine Enthusiast:
This legendary Champagne, only produced in exceptional years, comes from the village of Le Mesnil in the Côte des Blancs. It is made from 100% Chardonnay and aged for many years before release. Its minerality, concentration and beautiful fruit are still astonishingly young and deserve further aging. Drink from 2020. *Cellar Selection*. 99 Points
James Suckling MW: Such an impressive wine for the detail in every respect. The nose delivers fresh lemon and grapefruit peel, together with white, stony minerals and very, very fresh and light pastry notes. Some grilled hazelnuts, too. The palate is super fine, supple and crisp with attractive, dry, salty minerals on the finish that holds super long, fine and focused. Elegant citrus and light brioche to close. Drink or hold. 97 Points

Wine and Spirits: This latest release of Salon announces itself with energy and leaves with freshness. It comes from a vintage marked by a cool, cloudy August that delayed ripening; after the vines recovered in September, they yielded this delicate chardonnay, completely saturated with flavor. It comes from 20 parcels in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, a selection established by the founder, Aimé Salon, in the early 1900s, including one estate parcel of 2.5 acres. Other than exclaiming on the wine's delicious flavors, our panel was seduced by its texture, describing it in variations of silk, satin or chalk and velvet whiteness. It has a presence-a remarkable infusion of chalk soil-that sets it apart. 97 Points
Antonio Galloni Vinous: The 2007 Salon is gorgeous. Weightless, delicate and understated, the 2007 is all class. Today, the 2007 reminds me of the 2004 in its bright, citrus and floral-infused profile, but with a bit more creaminess, mid-palate depth and softer contours, all of which will make the 2007 easy to drink with minimal cellaring. Next to the 2006, the 2007 is quite a bit fresher and more delineated, with none of exuberance, power of tropically-leaning overtones found in its younger sibling. At this stage, the 2007 is a bit inward and closed in on itself. Then again, it is Salon. This is another terrific showing from Salon and the team headed by President Didier Depond. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. 96 Points
