The 2 remarkable Clos des Varoilles Monopoles from 2016

There are not too many wines in Burgundy where the owner produces two separate cuvees. Indeed, the vineyard holdings are often so small that multiple vineyards must be blended to create one wine.
Domaine des Varoilles are the sole owner of the Clos des Varoilles from which the domaine takes its name.
The vineyard is the most westerly of the great Premier Crus in the Combe Lavaux. It has an ancient history being purchased by the Chapter of Langres between 1272 and 1329 and maintained as a clos by it until it was dispossessed during the French Revolution.
It is 5.97 hectares in size (almost as big as Clos St-Jacques) yet few wine lovers have heard of the vineyard.
With such a large holding it is perhaps not unexpected that the domaine has chosen to produce two cuvees. And what wines they are!
The "standard cuvee" (if you can call it that) is produced from 45-65 year old vines (truly Vieilles Vignes) and sees 40% new oak.
The second cuvee is the domaine's Cuvee Prestige 100%. Here the vines are 100 years old and the wine sees 100% new oak. It is a Grand Cru in everything except name.

Several times I have tasted both wines alongside each other with a group of Burgundy lovers. To say they were impressive would be a gross understatement.

Both wines showed depth, intensity and balance that is rarely seen at Premier Cru level. Most people thought the wines were from Vosne-Romanee and quite a lot opted for Grand Cru.

At the moment we have the "regular wine" in stock. We have more of the Cuvee Prestige 100% being readied to ship from France. These are exceptional wines - don't miss them!.

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos des Varoilles Monopole Vieilles Vignes 2016
Normal Price $229.95
Special $195.50

Darren Harris:
Immediately south of La Romanee, high in the combe. Clos des Varoilles in a significant monopole of almost 6 hectares that was planted in the second half of the 13th century by the Chapter of Langres before it was dispossessed during the French Revolution.

45-65 year old vines, 40% new oak. Deeper and richer than La Romanee with more breadth and complexity. Darker fruits with some liquorice-scented floral notes and a hint of wildness. There is a fine spine of acidity running through the wine which ensures, despite some weight, it remains balanced and captivating.  A Premier Cru to add to your must buy list.

Varoilles Prestige label
The domaine produces 2 barrels (600 bottles) of this wine from century old vines. They don't show it to critics and I know the reason why - if they did it would all be gone in a flash.

Darren Harris:
There are only 2 barrels of this special cuvee produced from the oldest vines in this Monopole. I think the domaine likes to keep it a bit of a secret but we have managed to snare a few cases.

Tasted after the regular cuvee. Incredibly deep colour. Still purple. Powerful and layered nose taking all the elements from the regular cuvee and magnifying them, and then adding nuances of its own. Small, crunchy dark fruits, liquorice and flowers. Fresh spices. So so deep. The century old vines add texture, intensity and power. The palate has the weight and depth of a serious Grand Cru. 100% new oak but totally surrounded by complex fruit flavours. Thirty minutes in the glass saw the wine go to another level as the true character of this great parcel really blossomed. Exceptional. A must have!

Varoilles Romanee Label
Domaine des Varoilles Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Romanee Monopole 2016
25 bottles in stock
Another serious Monopole of the domaine. La Romanee sits above Clos des Varoilles at the very west end of the Combe de Lavaux.
It is stony, high and cool and in conjunction with the old vines this makes for a breathtakingly fresh, mineral Gevrey.
Darren Harris: A super monopole from high in the combe that influences the best 1er Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin. La Romanee is stony and south facing but the forst provides some shade and ensure a cool wine with great finesse.
60 year old vines. 100% destemmed. Very different to Champonnet served before it. A gorgeously restrained nose of cherry, earth and iron. The palate has crunchy red-black fruits and fine mineral notes that fan out in in the mouth. The tannins start late and provide a long and elegant finish. This is a wine of considerable finesse and style.

Jancis Robinson:
Monopole. Mid cherry red. Again that attractive dusty/mineral nose, maybe whole-bunch influence, more noticeable than on the above. Super-moreish and extremely fine tannin texture. Finesse and harmony with a mouth-watering finish. 17/20

Chezeaux Charmes label
Domaine des Chezeaux (Ponsot) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes 2014
12 bottles in stock

Made by Laurent Ponsot under an en metayage arrangment and identical to the wine bearing the Domaine Ponsot label.

In fact the bottles bear the name Ponsot molded on the base, the same modern synthetic cork and the label states "Eleve, vinifie et mis en bouteille par le Domaine Ponsot".

Wine Advocate - Neal Martin:
The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1Er Cru les Charmes has a tightly-wound bouquet that does not require too much encouragement to reveal scents of macerated small red cherries, blueberry and a hint of cold flint. There is something "cool" about this nose (temperature speaking). The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry. I like the tannins here, precise and perhaps a little rigid, yet they frame the red berry fruit with style and lend wonderful mineralité on the finish. This is an impressive Chambolle Charmes that should age with style and grace. 92-94 Points

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The 2014 Chambolle-Musigny "les Charmes" from Domaine Ponsot is outstanding, delivering a deep and pure bouquet of sappy red and black cherries, beetroot, mustard seed, a beautiful base of minerality and a bit of coffee in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very mineral in personality, with a fine core, lovely focus and grip, moderate tannins and a very long, suave and classy finish. A quintessential example of this lovely premier cru. (Drink between 2020-2060). 93 Points
