Ogier produce one of the most interesting ranges of Chateauneuf-du-Pape to be found. They have a 4-Bottle Set titled "Expression de Terroir".

The Set comprises four wines, all with the same blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Cinsault, made from grapes grown on the four different soil types of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Vinification of all wines is the same; traditional with a long maceration, frequent pigeage and pumping over. The wines are aged for 12-14 months in large truncated oak vats.

Only the terroir varies!
Earlier this year I had the opportunity to taste through all four wines with a few clients. What a terrific tasting it was. Just like in Burgundy these wines display unique characters. I am not sure if I had a clear favourite - I feel the best way to purchase is the Set of 4 and try to create the opportunity to taste several wines together. I should also point out the wines are very good value.

Ogier Terroirs Bottles Black

The four terroirs are: Eclats Calcaires (limestone rock), Safres (marl), Gres Rouge (degraded red sandstone) and Galet Roules (rounded glacier pebbles). The resulting wines are quite different!
This year they offer the wines both individually and as a Boxed Set of 4. It is a wonderful idea and provides the opportunity to see the effect soil makes on wines that are the same assemblage. Knowledge is king!

All wines are from the exceptional 2016 vintage. To reintroduce them to our portfolio we offer the wines at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount. You may buy the wines individually or as a Set in a lovely colour box.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Eclats Calcaires 2016
Landed Price $99.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $74.95

Ogier Eclats Calcaires label
Jeb Dunnuck: The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Eclats Calcaires offers lighter red fruits and rose petal notes, with a real sense of minerality coming through with time in the glass. Medium-bodied, elegant, and silky, count me in as a fan. The blend is 95% Grenache and 5% Cinsault. 93 Points

James Suckling Tasting Report:
This dishes up some wild, flinty funk. Meaty, reductive notes surround ripe, red and blue fruit with plenty of herbs and graphite-like, stony notes. The palate is fluid, supple and layered with ripe tannins, coated with red fruit. Long and even. Drink or hold. 91 Points
Chateauneuf-du-Pape Galets Roules 2016
Landed Price $99.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $74.95

Ogier Galets Roules label Jeb Dunnuck: Coming all from the famed rolled pebble soils of the appellation, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Galets Roulés is more elegant and silkier than I would have expected, as I always find that this terroir yields more power and richness than elegance. Nevertheless, beautiful notes of kirsch, white flowers, and cherries all flow to a full-bodied, seamless red that's quite close in style to the Eclats Calcaires release
. 92 Points

James Suckling Tasting Report: This is elegant, delivering pristine aromas of wild raspberries, blueberries and mulberries with stony, chalky-mineral accents also holding sway. The palate has a smooth array of plush raspberries and red plums. Really seductive with silky, long tannins. Drink or hold.
 93 Points

Chateauneuf-du-Pape Gres Rouge 2016
Landed Price $99.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $74.95

Ogier Gres Rouge label Jeb Dunnuck: Lots of black fruits, licorice, pepper, and crushed rock notes emerge from the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grès Rouge (red sandstone soils), and it's a richer, powerful wine compared to the other cuvées here. It's mouthfilling and loaded with fruit.
 91 Points

James Suckling Tasting Report: This has almost essence-like concentration and ripeness. The assertive cassis and dark plums are ripened to glossy luster. The tannin texture is smooth and open. Drink or hold.
 92 Points
Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Safres 2016
Landed Price $99.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $74.95

Ogier Safres label Jeb Dunnuck: The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Safres shines for its elegance and seamlessness more than its power and richness. Dried red fruits, spice, some dried flowers, and garrigue notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied red that just glides over the palate. A blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Cinsault, it's a beautiful wine.
93 Points

James Suckling Tasting Report: Rich, sweet-raspberry, pepper, herb and fresh, floral allure. The palate is smoothly layered with supple, fine and easy tannins. Long and succulent. Superb, energetic finish. Drink or hold.

Ogier Oratoire label Decanter Magazine:
A delightful style of modern Châteauneuf-du-Pape, without sacrificing its warmth and power. Lush in the mouth, it has bright, lightly stewed red cherry and plum fruit and a lick of vanilla. (Drink between 2018-2023). 93 Points
James Suckling Tasting Report:
Very impressive wine with sturdy tannins and plenty of upbeat, dark, punchy fruit on offer. The palate has a very plush, silky edge with ripe, red-plum and blackberry flavors, cast amid assertive, bold but silky tannins. Drink or hold. 93 Points
Drink Rhone - John Livingston-Learmonth:
Shiny dark red colour. A deeply set spicing lies within the bouquet, with airs of black stone fruits, dates, a huskiness that shrouds it rather. The palate bears closely condensed matter, is thick, but keeps moving. The tannins have a darkness that illuminates the close, giving it a spring in its step. It finishes with purpose. This can become interesting and varied. 14.5°. 90,000 b. 80% Gren, 10% Syr, 5% Mourv, 5% Cins. ****(*)

rOUSSEAU cLOS sT-jACQUES LABEL
Domaine
Rousseau Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St-Jacques 2000
1 available
Winehog.org: The Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques 2000 from Rousseau is in a beautiful place - offering maturing notes. In the bouquet red and dark berries, lovely complex notes - hints of iron, asian spices. On the palate partly resolved fruit - red and dark fruits - quite mature yet still a slightly austere note of dark berries and tar. Very fresh and could do with a bit more or cellaring - amazing for the vintage. 93 Points

View From the Cellar:
The Rousseau 2000 Clos St. Jacques is a bit more backward than the '00 Ruchottes, but it is equally successful once it has had a chance to open up in decanter. At about the thirty minute mark the wine was hitting on all cylinders, soaring from the glass in a lovely mélange of strawberries, black cherries, grilled meats, chocolate, herbs, fine soil tones and a fair bit of spicy oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, complex and impressively deep at the core, with sound acids for near-term drinking, modest tannins, and a long, opulent and complex finish. This is a first class example of the vintage that has perhaps but one slight drawback. As the wine sat in the glass it eventually (after 90 minutes or so) became a bit woody, with the oak creating just a bit of a linear impression on both the nose and palate. I would probably have been happier with less new in a vintage such as 2000, but there is no doubt that this has the stuffing to carry its wood with ease and grace. (Drink between 2007-2025). 91 Points

Fourrier Clos St Jacques label

Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques Vieilles Vignes 2000
1 available

View From the Cellar:
Fourrier's Clos St. Jacques is a stellar example of the vintage, soaring from the glass in a melange of red cherries, strawberries, orange zest, a bit of grilled meat, striking minerality, coffee, mustard seed and a touch of cedary, spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full, complex and utterly transparent, with stunning elegance for a Clos St. Jacques, great intensity of flavor, and great length and grip on the moderately tannic and quite tangy finish. This is another 2000 red Burgundy that really possesses outstanding acidity. Great juice in the making. (Drink between 2008-2030) 92 Points

Vinous: Medium-deep red. Tangy, highly perfumed nose dominated by cherry. Wonderfully sweet and suave but at the same time vibrant and penetrating. Extremely fresh for the vintage. Finishes sweet, firm and very long. Captivating wine. 92 Points

Dugat-Py Charmes
Domaine Bernard Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2004
1 available

Vinous:
Good ruby-red. Extremely primary aromas of blackberry and black raspberry, complicated by flowers and spices. This offers utterly compelling dark fruit, mineral and game flavors, with a floral element lifting the wine. Very classy and intense, conveying an impression of outstanding harmony. Finishes wonderfully sweet, long and hard to spit. A distinctly feminine style of Charmes; not at all a powerhouse.  92-95 Points

Solitude Secrete Label

Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Reserve Secrete 2010
3 available
Jeb Dunnuck, The Rhone Report: My favorite vintage of this cuvee to date and a knockout wine that is up there with the best of the vintage, the 2010 Domaine de la Solitude (Lançon Père et Fils) Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Secrète is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah that has all of the Syrah and a small portion of the Grenache aged in new French oak. Rich, deep, and powerful, with a saturated, inky color, this delivers a kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors, with notions of blackberry, chocolate, smoke, pepper, graphite, and pot roast-like nuances all soaring from the glass. Where the Cuvée Cornelia Constanza is all Grenache, all the time, this has a (slightly) more restrained profile, while still playing in that full-bodied, decadent end of the spectrum. Very concentrated, structured, and beautifully balanced, this blockbuster needs 4-5 years of bottle age, and will shine for two decades or more. 98 Points

Solitude Tradition Label
Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition Rouge MAGNUM 2015
6 available
Wine Advocate: Domaine de la Solitude turned in a top performance with its 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape. It shows hints of toasted almond or marzipan on the nose, ripe cherries and hints of stone fruit, and while it's richly tannic, the tannins are ripe and velvety. It should drink well for 15+ years. 93 Points
