More magic in the bottle!
Wines arrive early December

Last year I visited Domaine Coste-Caumartin for the first time. I was blown away by the quality and style of the wines. This was Pommard at a level I had not seen before. Reviews from Gilbert and Gaillard soon followed confirming my impression. The wines sold exceptionally well - we have even ordered more of the Clos des Boucherottes 2016 which is due in a couple of weeks - see to the right.

A year on and it is time to present the 2017's. Not long ago I received reviews of all wines from Gilbert and Gaillard. For those not familiar with the names they are France's most famous critics. They do not hand out high scores recklessly like some reviewers. Scores of 92 or more indicate a very special wine.

The domaine's finest vineyard is their monopole Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Boucherottes. It has been in the family since 1908. The vineyard has always been a jewel of the village and 500 years ago it was part of the Royal Domain. This vineyard lies on the Beaune border and is largely surrounded by Pommard 1er Cru Les Petits Epenots to the south and Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches to the north. It is, in effect, a clos of Petits Epenots.

For 2017 we have a complete array of reds and a lovely white from St-Romain. There are some very serious scores on the lieux-dits Pommards further enhancing the domaine's glowing reputation for creating Pommard of great character and drinkability at a nice price.

As these are the first reviews for the 2017's we have a special Pre Arrival Offer All wines are available at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount.

If you already have the wonderful 2016 Clos des Boucherottes here's your chance to grab some of the tewrrific 2017 at the same price before it sells out.

Coste-Caumartin Boucherottes label Gilbert and Gaillard: Clear garnet color. Nose a little closed, floral sensation, fruity (cherry), undergrowth... Elegance, purity, silky in the mouth despite an aromatic contribution still reserved. High potential assets. It would be a pity to succumb too quickly to its charms. 94 Points

Darren Harris: Clos de la Boucherottes lies on the Beaune border and is largely surrounded by Pommard 1er Cru Les Petits Epenots to the south and Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches to the north. It is, in effect, a clos of Petits Epenots. This Monopole has been in the family since 1908. Many of you purchased the outstanding 2016 and I am delighted to say that the 2017 is cut from the same cloth. The most aromatic nose of the Pommards. Very floral with cherry, marzipan and violets. The palate is intense and mouthfilling with layers of juicy fruit and a mineral cut. The mouthfeel is one feature of this vineyard that few Pommard can match. There is a velvet texture from old vines and low cropping. The tannins are there but are so well coated by the fruit so their influence is really just a support act. Another exceptional Clos de la Boucherottes and highly recommended. At our Pre Arrival price this is a must have for your cellar.

Coste-Caumartin Fremiers label Gilbert and Gaillard: Pretty sustained color, beautiful ruby. Fine nose, on wild berries (cherries, blackcurrant). A very elegant Pommard, very supple, with a velvety grain. The finish is adorned with fine tannins and minerality. Such a sense of balance is pure happiness.
94 Points
Darren Harris:
Les Fremiers is on the Volnay border and diagonally across from Pommard 1er Cru Rugien Bas. The domaine has a 1.65 hectare parcel. Deep colour. Nose of cherry, blackcurrant, plums and violets. This is tightly would with a mineral drive on the palate no doubt from the presence of rock as well as clay in the soil. Stylish and focused with lovely balance. Elegant and long and quite delicious. A Pommard of character and class.

Domaine Coste-Caumartin Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Boucherottes Monopole 2016
Third shipment arriving soon!
The wine that started it all!
A stunning Pommard with the quality of many a Grand Cru. Our first shipment sold out and we ordered everything the domaine has left.

The second shipment sold before it arrived. We have arranged for a little more and that will be the last from the domaine's reserve stocks. They will be shipped with the 2017's later this year.

If you want some (or more) please act quickly.

Gilbert & Gaillard:
A garnet color with ruby highlights. Racy nose, floral presence with greedy Morello cherry. The palate seduces by its scale, its elegance, its fullness. One praises to the skies for its fruit, its floral dimension, its generous tannic finish. A 2016 with an entire character.

Darren Harris:
Deep purple-red. Intense nose of cool black fruits - mostly cherries - and huge minerality. Refined and cool. Tight, very tight. The super low cropping adds layer upon layer on a textured palate culminating in an amazing peacock's tail and a very long stony finish. The silky tannins are extremely fine and coated by the velvety fruit. The domaine sets out to make this wine as a Grand Cru with extremely low cropping and beautiful handling. They succeed admirably. I don't think I have ever tasted a Pommard quite like this. It reminds me of a theoretical blend of Corton Clos du Roi, Clos Vougeot and Clos de la Roche with each coming to the fore as the wine sits in the glass. It is a sensual wine and is very special indeed. Forget your pre-conceived idea of Pommard. This is a super wine of Grand Cru quality.

Salon 2007 mood
Champagne Salon - the Updated Story
Last 2 bottles of the 2007
Salon Cuvee S is only produced in exceptional vintages and just 42 vintages have been deemed worthy in the years since creation in 1911 by the late Aimé Salon.
The 2008 is the latest release. It was a small (and exceptional) vintage for Salon so the decision was made to only bottle the 2008 in Magnum. So far, so good.

Salon Oenotheque

Then Salon decided to only release the 2008 Magnum as part of a boxed set. The Salon Oenotheque Case shown above comprises 1 Magnum of 2008, 2 bottles of 2007, 2 bottles of 2006 and 2 bottles of 2004.

But the worst news is the price and availability. Due to the small production in 2008 there are not a lot of the Oenotheque cases available. I have discussed it with the local importer and they told me they would be keeping their small allocation for dinners and tastings. I have been offered the cases from several overseas suppliers and the landed cost with taxes would be around $17,000.00. That's without any margin for me. Quite simply that works out at an average of over $2000.00 a bottle.
On top of that we have been advised that it unlikely that Salon will produce a Champagne from the 2009, 2010, 2011 or 2012 vintages.
Already the market has reacted and we are seeing an increase in price for all back vintages internationally.
We are down to our last 2 bottles of the superb 2007. Our advertised price is $995.00 a bottle. Later today, should we still have any stock, we will increase the price to $1195.00 a bottle.
I think the new price levels set by Salon and the shortage of the wine in the market now (which is only going to become far worse with no 2009, 2010, 2011 or 2012) will mean the price for the 2007 and all back vintage will increase significantly in the short to medium term.

Last 2 bottles - $995.00 each

Wine Enthusiast:
This legendary Champagne, only produced in exceptional years, comes from the village of Le Mesnil in the Côte des Blancs. It is made from 100% Chardonnay and aged for many years before release. Its minerality, concentration and beautiful fruit are still astonishingly young and deserve further aging. Drink from 2020. *Cellar Selection*. 99 Points

James Suckling MW:
Such an impressive wine for the detail in every respect. The nose delivers fresh lemon and grapefruit peel, together with white, stony minerals and very, very fresh and light pastry notes. Some grilled hazelnuts, too. The palate is super fine, supple and crisp with attractive, dry, salty minerals on the finish that holds super long, fine and focused. Elegant citrus and light brioche to close. Drink or hold. 97 Points
