Suremain 2016 Header
Highly rated Premier Crus for under $60 a bottle! Remember the good old days!

In March last year I made my second trip to Mercurey to visit Domaine de Suremain. This time it was the 2016's that had been prepared for tasting. I remembered just how terrific the 2015's looked at my visit last last year and how surprisingly good, and ageworthy, the old wines served over a delightful dinner were.

What the 2016's confirmed that Domaine de Suremain is an unsung hero. The quality of the wines is tremendous and the prices are crazy low. Where else can you buy Premier Cru Red Burgundy for $52.50?

The Domaine de Suremain comprises 18 hectares of vines spread across some of Mercurey's finest appellations. The property has been in the same family for seven generations and is currently run by Yves and Loic Suremain. They have 6 different red Mercurey including 5 Premier Crus. They also have a white from the 1er Cru En Sazenay.

Many of you purchased the domaine's 2015's which I hope you have tried. I wholeheartedly recommend the 2016's. They are serious wines each displaying a unique vineyard character.

This week you can buy the 2016's at a 25% discount - the same as if you purchased them Pre Arrival. At under $60.00 a bottle for the 1er Crus these are a steal.

All wines are in stock. Mix and match as you please.
Mercurey 1er Cru En Sazenay 2016
Normally $77.95
Special $58.50
Suremain Sazenay LabelWine Enthusiast:
This is a wine for long-term aging, with rich tannins and impressive red fruits that promise a fine future. It comes from a well-exposed vineyard on the western edge of the village and which begins the slope into the hills. Drink from 2023. 92 Points

Tim Atkin MW: 92 Points

Darren Harris:
Spicy nose of cool fruits. It is complex, refined and pure. On the palate we have more juicy, cool fruits, a hint of smoke and a sublime balance with plenty of fruit density. The finish is long and fine and altogether serious. Beautifully structured. Not as powerful or muscular as some of the previous wines, En Sazenay is all about style, balance and precision. The top wine of a tremendous lineup. The domaine considers this to be one of the greatest En Sazenay produced.

Suremain Eveque Label
Gold Medal Paris 2018 Gold Medal Concours General Agricole Paris 2018
Tim Atkin MW: 92 Points

The nose is aromatic, fine, racy and precise. It reveals notes of blackberry, strawberry and plum associated with touches of cassis, Zan, violet as well as a discreet hint of tobacco, sweet spices and an impercerptible touch of cardamom (in the background). After aeration appearance of cocoa hints. The Palate is fruity, juicy, well-balanced, elegant, precise and offers a slight mineral frame, a beautiful finesses, a small straightness, freshness, fat as well as a nice definition. On the palate this wine expresses notes of fleshy cherry, flesh plum and slight notes of blackberry, raspberry, associated with slight touches of chocolate, caramelized oak and a subtle/discreet hint of liquorice and vanilla (in the backgound). Good length. A good wine! 93 Points

Darren Harris:
Bottled November 2017. A more serious wine than the two previous (Le Crets and Les Croichots). This has deeper and darker flavours and a little more oak showing. We're in the blue-black spectrum with spice and earthy minerals. The tannins play a bigger part in this powerful, built to age Mercurey. Pop some in the cellar and give it a good five years.

Mercurey 1er Cru La Bondue 2016
Normally $77.95
Special $58.50

Suremain Bondeau LabelWine Enthusiast: This structured, firm wine is packed with tannins as well as warm red fruits. Cherries and strawberries dominate the flavor spectrum although restrained by the tannin and wood-aging structure. This rich wine has good aging potential. Drink from 2022. 91 Points

Darren Harris:
Being bottled tomorrow (the day after my tasting). Serious nose! Very dark fruit - black cherries, quality dark chocolate, spices. The palate is full and textured and the wine is mouthfilling with more cherry and dark chocolate bitterness. Multi-layered and powerful with a long finish.

Mercurey 1er Cru Les Crets 2016
Normally $69.95
Special $52.50

Darren Harris: Bottled the day before my tasting. Les Crets is always the most feminine of the domaine's 1er Crus. The 2016 is no exception. A very aromatic nose with soft fruits, mostly in the red spectrum (raspberry, strawberry), and flowers. There is a wafting delicacy to the nose. The palate is fresh and zippy with a lovely line of acid lifting the juicy, feminine fruit characters. Quite lovely.
Mercurey 1er Cru Les Croichots 2016
Normally $69.95
Special $52.50

Suremain Croichots label
Darren Harris: Bottled November 2017. A nose that is more cherry than raspberry. Sterner than Les Crets with deceptive power and more chewy palate. There is still juicy fruit but in this cuvee we see greater structure and much more minerality.

Suremain Mercurey Label VertdeVin:
The nose is aromatic, elegant and offers a slight richness as well as a slight straightness. It reveals notes of crushed black cherry, plum and a touch of blackberry combined with a hint of crushed strawberry, as well as fine chocolate hints, toasted touches/ caramalized wood and a discreet / imperceptible hint of flowers. The palate is fruity, well-balanced, juicy and offers a slight acid frame, elegance, freshness, precision as well as a nice guideline/definition. On the palate this wine expresses notes of juicy plum, crushed strawberry and slight notes of berries associated with a hint of blackberry, discreet touches of Zan, touches of toasted oak, flowers as well an an imperceptible hint of cassis bud and chocolate. Tannins are fine and well built. Nice persistence. 91-92 Points
Darren Harris:
A blend of La Pillotte, la Bouthiere, La Vigne Blanche and Le Bourgneuf. Bottled November 2017. Nose of dark fruits. Fresh, tight and nicely structured with lots of character rarely seen at this price point. Finishes long and fine.

Bertagna Vougeot Village label
Domaine Bertagna Chambolle-Musigny Le Village 2016
Domaine Bertagna own some serious vineyards in and around Vougeot.
The vineyard Le Village, not surprisingly, lies alongside pretty town of Chambolle-Musigny. It is adjoined by the Premier Crus Les Carrieres and Les Feusselottes and Les Echezeaux. The domaine owns 0.39 hectares of which 2/3 have extremely old vines. We weren't expecting any of this wine so when it arrived in our last delivery we were somewhat surprised. Today, we offer it at a nice price.
Darren Harris:
From a single parcel in the lieu-dit Le Village which adjoins the 1er Crus Les Feusselottes and Les Carrieres. Old vines - 2/3 are 70+ years old. Deep red-purple. Very lifted aromatic nose with spicy red fruit. The palate displays the same character with minerals and spice and a wonderful freshness. Good weight. Finishes long with a little tannin on the end. The old vines ensure that this is always a high class Villages Chambolle.

Jomain Combettes Label
Domaine Jomain Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 2016
Puligny Combettes combines the minerality and florals of Puligny with the texture of Meursault just across the border.

Darren Harris: If the Puligny Les Perrieres is about finesse Les Combettes is about mouthfeel. The vineyard is on the border of Meursault - directly across from Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes and Perrieres. And there are some similarities. Jasper Morris MW says "it shares with its neighbours the plumpness of top Meursault without losing the refinement and mineral elegance of great Puligny".
Jomain's 2016 is open and quite generous. In addition to the minerality and flowers there is a little (Meursault) honeycomb. It is rounder and fuller, but never losing its acid drive. In the mouth it has more weight but is certainly not heavy. Powerful and long it is a great contrast to Perrieres elegance.
Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": Hmm not the largest nose, but a very attractive one - a vibration of minerality here. More relaxed, with a wider panaorama of flavour that melts over the palate - still plenty of rocks in this, very interesting flavour and the easist to appreciate. Delicious.
