Scarce 2017's from Domaine des Chezeaux. Made by Laurent Ponsot and Amelie Berthaut. Very limited indeed!
Created in 1982 from vines owned by the Mercier family since 1928, Domaine des Chezeaux comprises 4 hectares of high quality vineyards.
They own nearly 60% of Griotte-Chambertin (1.57 hectares) as well as vines in Clos St-Denis, Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut St-Jacques and Cazetiers and Gevrey villages. 

While Domaine des Chézeaux sells wine under its own label, it does not work the vines or make the wines. All of their wines are made under metayage arrangements with either Laurent Ponsot or Amelie Berthaut.
The Griottes-Chambertin, Clos St. Denis, Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes are made by Ponsot. The Gevrey 1er Cru and Village wines are made by Berthaut.
The arrangement is the same, and is indeed a very old French style of agreement. Ponsot and Berthaut work the vineyards and make the wines one third of the finished product is given to Chezeaux as payment.

The Domaine des Chezeaux wines are identical to those bottled under the Ponsot or Berthaut labels (simply one third of the bottled wines are returned to Chezeaux). Only the label design is different! (Oh, and the price - especially of the Ponsot-made wines).

Chezeaux Cazetiers LabelOne of Gevrey-Chambertin's top Premier Crus, Les Cazetiers lies alongside Clos St-Jacques. The vineyard produces fine, elegant, complex wines which Jasper Morris MW says "gives a feeling of refinement and precision which has an intellectual appeal as well as being vinously satisfying."
Chezeaux's Cazetiers holding is tiny at just 0.22 hectares, much of which was planted in 1944.

Chezeaux Charmes label John Gilman "View from the Cellar": As I noted last year, Laurent has retained his contract for the vineyards from Domaine des Chézeaux, so the Chambolle "Charmes" and the other wines made from the fermage agreement are much the same here as they were at Domaine Ponsot. The 2017 Charmes offers up a lovely and ripe bouquet of red plums, black cherries, beetroot, a touch of chocolate, a fien base of soil, gamebird and a topnote of mustard seed. On the palate the wine is deep, full and sappy at the core, with modest tannins, good, tangy acids and a very long, complex and quite plush finish. Good juice. 2022-2050+. 93 Points

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": 
The 2017 Griotte-Chambertin from the Ponsots is excellent and very much cut from the same stylistic cloth as it was back during Laurent's time at the helm of Domaine Ponsot in Morey. The ripe and very expressive nose wafts from the glass in a mix of sappy black cherries, black plums, dark chocolate, chalky soil tones, grilled meats, mustard seed and a bit of beetroot in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, precise and impressively mineral in personality, with a sappy core, ripe tannins and fine balance and grip on the long, tangy and complex finish. A superb Ponsot Griotte! 2027-2075.

Jasper Morris MW: Glowing fresh mid purple. Superb grace to the nose, magically juicy, then a firmer backbone behind. Some crunch here, only medium intensity, a wine to judge by its class more than its size. The fruit is ripe but not untidy, more in the fresh little red fruits register. Tasted: November 2018. 93-96 Points

Jasper Morris MW: The vines were planted in 1905. The colour is an attractive rich mid purple. The nose is truly magisterial. Heady ripe red fruit, too well bred to count as an explosion of fruit. Too intense to be described as floral. Lovely balancing acidity and exceptional length. Hedonism in its optimal rather than maximal form. Tasted: November 2018. 5 Star Wine! 95-98 Points

Philippe Cheron - A Superstar in the Making?
In the late 1930's, Paul Misset, Philippe Cheron's grandfather, acquired parcels of vines in the Vougeot and Nuits Saint Georges communes. Not being a wine-grower, he entrusted their management to tenant wine growers in Vosne-Romanée. Starting with these original parcels, Paul Misset's grandchildren, two generations later, have built up a wine domaine which today covers 5 hectares, spread over the Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne Romanée, Chambolle Musigny and Clos de Vougeot appellations.

The domaine's winery and cellars are located in the historical centre of Nuits Saint Georges. The vaulted 19th century cellars allow the wines to be aged in perfect conditions and the modern, efficient winery has recently been totally refurbished.

After working as technical director at Domaine Jean-Claude Belland in Santenay, Philippe Cheron took over the family estate in 2011. A trained engineer, he studied at the wine university in Suze la Rousse before gaining important experience making wine in the Rhône valley and then Burgundy. To round off this experience, he also took an agricultural training course at the Lycée Viticole in Beaune.

I have had the pleasure of tasting at the domaine for a few vintages and starting with 2015 we decided to import the wines of this small domaine. I have experienced Philippe's growing expertise and seen how successive vintages how become more spectacular. His Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 2016 was one of the most stunning wines I have ever tasted from barrel.

Being only 5 hectares in size this is a domaine that does not produce a lot of wine. In small vintages the quantity becomes even more restricted. Factor in low cropping old vines and we see production can be as little as just two barrels - less than 600 bottles for wine aficionados across the globe.

This dinner features 11 wines from Domaine Philippe Cheron from the 2016 and 2015 vintages. It includes the once-only Chambolle-Musigny Tirage 3096 Bottles 2016 - a product of the hail that ravaged Chambolle-Musigny in 2016 and necessitated the production of just one Chambolle cuvee that vintage, the outstanding Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 2016, the first vintage of this wine following the return of vineyards to the domaine, and the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 from vines in the climat of Les Hautes Baudes.

We'll also compare Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux, Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees and Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet from 2016 and 2015.

Very much in its customary style, offering up a ripe and sappy nose of black cherries, plums, chocolate, roasted meats, a fine base of soil, a touch of mustard seed and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, powerful and opulent in personality, with a sappy core, fine-grained tannins and excellent length and grip on the long, tangy and beautifully balanced finish.
