Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2016 - Bouley versus Buffet. Delicious wines!

Volnay 1er Cru Champans from two top producers. Just terrific!
Those who attended our Bouley vs Buffet Dinner at Ryne recently enjoyed a wonderful snapshot of the 2016 Premier Cru Volnays from Domaines Bouley and Buffet. It was enjoyable and educational to compare like wines from two high quality producers all from the gorgeous 2016 vintage.

Volnay was certainly an outstanding performer in 2016.

Today we feature the 1er Cru Champans. First mentioned in its own right in 1282 this is one of Volnay's top vineyards. Jasper Morris MW says "It is quintessental Volnay". The stony, red-brown soil, with lots of underlying limestone, produces a wine of depth and power but with real energy. It is a favourite of many Volnay lovers and ages very well.

Today we present the Buffet and Bouley 2016's at a 25% discount.

There were numerous other lovely wines from both producers. To see what is available from Domaine Buffet click here and from Domaine Bouley click here.

Domaine Francois Buffet Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2016
Normally $153.95
Special $115.50
22 bottles available
Buffet Champans Label Jasper Morris MW: 25 to 30% whole bunch which is now his norm. Vibrant purple and the whole bunch does lift the nose. Good firm fruit on the palate, raspberry and strawberry while the chocolate is still lurking. Finer, more elegant finish than his Clos de la Rougeotte. 92 Points

Darren Harris: 24 Feb 2019: Tasted blind. I thought this was the Clos des Chenes. The darkest fruit of the lineup. Some florals over juicy, complex fruit with the slightest hint of fresh, stony earth. The mid palate is quite powerful, gorgously textured and layered with a fine tannic spine. Old vines! Serious Volnay with the potential to age for a decade or more.
Domaine Pierrick Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chenes 2016
Normally $156.95
Special $117.95
51 bottles available
Bouley Pierrick Champans label 2016 The Fine Wine Review: 49 hl/ha. The vines here are 27 years-old, younger than most of the estate's vines in other vineyards, and so were able to better resist. The nose is spicy and stony. The mouth features intense, spicy, deep red fruits. There some structure here. This is not a fleshy Champans, but the tannins on the finish are ripe. 91-94 Points

Hospices Volnay Blondeau 2016 header
Hospices de Beaune Volnay 1er Cru Cuvee Blondeau 2016
Blondeau is named after Francois Blondeau, a serial benefactor, who amongst other donations provided the bells for the Hospices de Charite in 1811 (which can still be heard today), restored the church in Volnay, built a school and finally donated all his vineyards in Volnay and Pommard.

It is an assemblage from the Premier Crus Champans, Taillipieds, Ronceret and Mitans, most of which have great vine age.

The elevage was completed by Albert Bichot.
Darren Harris:
From barrel: Deep, saturated purple. Quite expressive even at this early stage with cool but intense spicy red and black fruits. Nice fruit volume on the palate with underlying acidity providing freshness. Like all top Volnay it has a sense of style; concentration without excess weight.
It is early days but this has all the hallmarks of a classic Volnay from great vineyards. It will interesting to follow in barrel over the next year.

From bottle: this has now been bottled for more than 6 months. It still has the same saturated colour with a high level of spice and serious fruit weight. I also see violets, minerals and bitter cherry. No doubt the frosts of 2016 affected the cropping level and have ensured the fruit here is deep, textured and complex. 2016 was an outstanding vintage for Volnay in general and this is certainly one of the most serious cuvees I have tasted. Some patience will be required but this is going to live up to the promise it showed in barrel and become one exceptional Volnay.
