The Gaunoux property is based in Meursault, but, in terms of their overall lineup, Pommard is the headliner: they bottle four different wines from the appellation, including bottlings from the village's three top sites: "Rugiens," "Epenots," and "Les Grands Epenots," all Premier Crus that are thought by many to deserve higher rankings. As in the case of Epenots, Rugiens is known for having a high percentage of iron in its soils over a limestone bedrock, giving its wines a slightly deeper color and a distinctive muscularity. Its exposition is south moving to southeast, allowing vines to stay sun-drenched for most of the day, and the Gaunoux family asserts that Rugiens bottlings from the '70s and '80s are still showing well today.

We have secured a small parcel of the Rugiens 2016 from the domaine. It isn't merely another elegantly structured validation of the vintage but a powerful reminder of why many experts believe Les Rugiens should be elevated to Grand Cru status.

Jasper Morris MW in "Inside Burgundy" says "The most sought-after of the Pommard vineyards - though this hides the fact that there is a dramatic difference in potential quality between the two halves....The lower part (5.83 hectares) is arguably Pommard's greatest vineyard, with only Clos des Epenots otherwise in contention....The soil is rich in iron, giving it the distinctive red colouring from which the word Rugiens derives. This is the vineyard from which the reputation of Pommard for hugely powerful, ageworthy wines stems."

This lower portion is where you will find Gaunoux's old vines.

Domaine Francois Gaunoux began in 1950 when the two brothers Francois and Michel split their father's holdings. Today the domaine is run by Claudine Gaunoux who manages some wonderful old-vine vineyards in and around Pommard. The style here is traditional in the best sense and the domaine has the reputation for producing very long-lived wines. Like many traditional Burgundian families they do not actively encourage critics but there is a very interesting and detailed article in Forbes magazine which you can view here.

Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is usually quite an expensive wine. No doubt the lack of attention means the Gaunoux bottling is still very reasonable for this Grand Cru quality vineyard.

Today, to introduce the wine, we offer it at a Pre Arrival Discount of 25% which makes it exceptional value, especially for a 2016. Pop a case in the cellar and drink over the next 20 years.

SommSelect: There's plenty of mineral structure and spice to complement the dark-robed fruit, and when it comes to site expression, I can't think of anything purer! In the glass, it's a deep ruby moving to garnet and pink at the rim, with aromas of black and red cherry, currant, wild raspberry, damp mushroom, underbrush, licorice, blue and purple flowers, and crushed stones. It shows great density and focus without feeling heavy.

More from Pommard

Pommard is enjoying a renaissance. It was once the most popular Burgundy in major international markets.

But it fell out of favour.

Today we are seeing forward thinking producers like Domaine Coste-Caumartin producing glorious wines from old vineyards that are the equal of those from anywhere on the cote.

We have a nice range available -  to view them all click here.
