Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report: "Here are super underground cellars - something of a luxury in Volnay - a warren of rooms, some containing older vintages - "Helpful to offset some of the missing volume from the last years:" says Marc-Olivier Buffet. These are damp cellars like Lafarge - don't touch something for a while and it will disappear under the penecillium....

Marc-Olivier describes this as a "small domaine of 8 hectares, in the family for centuries." Francois was Marc-Olivier's grandfather, Marc-Olivier taking the domaine on from his father, Jacques, in 2005. They produce eleven 1er crus including wines from as far-afield as Savigny and Pernand - they have 6 in Volnay.

He explains that it is mainly small volumes of each cuvee as the vines are 'vieilles-vignes'. 2 from 3 vintages are Bio, but they reserve the prerogative to occasionally use something 'synthetic'. Some parcels are even managed 'biodynamically', but Marc-Olivier says that he's not prepared to take the risk every year."

The Buffet style is about purity and intensity.  This is from a combination of old vines and low cropping. They are classic wines from what is becoming a go-to commune in Burgundy where quality and value for money are both very high.

With prices of reds from the Cote de Nuits always on the rise I urge you to take a look at Volnay. The wines are aromatic and delicious - not unlike Chambolle-Musigny.

Buffet Chenes label
An exceptional vineyard producing wines that are capable of very long ageing.

This comes from one hectare of vines, split into three parcels ranging between 46 and 80 years old. There is a lovely, sweet kernel of red fruit here, along with pert, chalky tannins which are present but refined. It is typically a more structured Volnay, but the gentle Buffet style keeps things in check. Drink 2021-2026.

Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy: 30% whole bunch fermentation here. Dense bright purple with a lush weight of fruit on the nose, very attractive and greater sensuality compared to the Clos de la Rougeotte. Indeed this is a big step up. 91 Points
Volnay 1er Cru Taillpieds 2017

Buffet Taillepieds label
Located high on a steep slope this is also a revered Volnay Premier Cru. The wine is mineral and very stylish.

Between 25 and 30 percent whole-bunch was incorporated here, giving an ethereal floral character to the nose. There is lovely supple fruit on entry, with surprisingly good density and understated power on the mid-palate. The floral character found on the nose comes back at the finish, haunting. Volnay de garde! Drink 2022-2028.

Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy: 30% whole bunch fermentation here. Slightly the darkest of the three colours, this is less exuberantly explosive than Clos des Chênes but has a tighter structure. Will take longer to come round. 91 Points
Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Rougeotte Monopole 2017

Buffet Rougeotte label
This is a monopole located just outside the more rustic Frémiets vineyard. Pale ruby in colour, the Clos de la Rougeotte has a lovely, lifted, red-berry nose. The palate has charming, juicy strawberry notes and a delicate structure that dances across the palate. Drink 2021-2026.

Buffet Village label
The vines in Le Village (named because of its location around the centre of the township) are quite young. The sheltered microclimate produces a soft, fruity wine with an explosive nose of red fruits and a supple, juicy palate. It is delicate and refined without the firmer structure of wines like Champans.

Buffet Champans Label Considered by many to be the greatest vineyard of Volnay. Buffet have 0.47 hectares with a vine age of 66 years.

Light purple in the glass, there is an intriguing hint of sweet spice - ginger even - on the nose, and masses of black fruit on the palate. The round, ripe tannins and gentle acidity make this a sunny, sensual wine.

Vinous, Neal Martin: The 2017 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a far superior bouquet compared to the Village Cru, featuring bright red cherry and crushed strawberry scents. The medium-bodied palate is cohesive and poised, displaying fine tannin and an attractive dash of cracked black pepper toward the finish. Excellent. (Drink between 2022-2038). 92 Points

Buffet Carelle label
Located below Bousse d'Or and alongside Champans this vineyard is a combination of the latin for sqaure (the vineyard is roughly square in shape) and the small chapel on the border.

We didn't have this wine in 2016 so it is nice to present it this year. There is brown limestone in the soil which makes for a round, textured wine with delightful aromatics.

In the late 1930's, Paul Misset, Philippe Cheron's grandfather, acquired parcels of vines in the Vougeot and Nuits Saint Georges communes. Not being a wine-grower, he entrusted their management to tenant wine growers in Vosne-Romanée. Starting with these original parcels, Paul Misset's grandchildren, two generations later, have built up a wine domaine which today covers 5 hectares, spread over the Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne Romanée, Chambolle Musigny and Clos de Vougeot appellations.

The domaine's winery and cellars are located in the historical centre of Nuits Saint Georges. The vaulted 19th century cellars allow the wines to be aged in perfect conditions and the modern, efficient winery has recently been totally refurbished.

After working as technical director at Domaine Jean-Claude Belland in Santenay, Philippe Cheron took over the family estate in 2011. A trained engineer, he studied at the wine university in Suze la Rousse before gaining important experience making wine in the Rhône valley and then Burgundy. To round off this experience, he also took an agricultural training course at the Lycée Viticole in Beaune.

I have had the pleasure of tasting at the domaine for a few vintages and starting with 2015 we decided to import the wines of this small domaine. I have experienced Philippe's growing expertise and seen how successive vintages how become more spectacular. His Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 2016 was one of the most stunning wines I have ever tasted from barrel.

Being only 5 hectares in size this is a domaine that does not produce a lot of wine. In small vintages the quantity becomes even more restricted. Factor in low cropping old vines and we see production can be as little as just two barrels - less than 600 bottles for wine aficionados across the globe.

This dinner features 11 wines from Domaine Philippe Cheron from the 2016 and 2015 vintages. It includes the once-only Chambolle-Musigny Tirage 3096 Bottles 2016 - a product of the hail that ravaged Chambolle-Musigny in 2016 and necessitated the production of just one Chambolle cuvee that vintage, the outstanding Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 2016, the first vintage of this wine following the return of vineyards to the domaine, and the Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2015 from vines in the climat of Les Hautes Baudes.

We'll also compare Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux, Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrees and Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnet from 2016 and 2015.
