Grand Cru quality at a Premier Cru Price...
We all know politics and wine are not a good mix.
Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes is sandwiched between the Grand Crus Latricerties-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche on the same line as Chambertin.

So why isn't it a Grand Cru?
There are two schools of thought. The first is that Combottes lies in the faintest of hollows which means it drains less well than the vineyards alongside. The break in the hill above allows a cool breeze to flow over the vines which means that ripening is a little later (certainly not a bad thing these days). However, Charmes-Chambertin is across the road and much of the land here is, in a number of ways, quite marginal.
The other possible reason was that at the time of classification much of Combottes belonged to growers in Morey-St-Denis (as it still does). Those in Gevrey saw little value in pushing for Combottes to be a Grand Cru (nine is enough!) and the makers in Morey were most likely not eager to spend the money.
So today, for whatever reason, Combottes remains a Premier Cru. But it is a Premier Cru of serious quality. The style of wine produced is somewhere between the vineyards alongside. It has the power and depth of Clos de la Roche and the texture and weight of Latricieres-Chambertin. For those in the know, happy to drink what is in the bottle, not what is on the label, it is a highly respected vineyard.
We have small quantities of the 2015 and 2016 Combottes from Georges Lignier in stock. This week you can save 27% on both vintages of this "almost Grand Cru" wine.

Tim Atkin MW:
A Premier Cru that's "a bit more than a Premier Cru," according to Benoit Stehly, this is tucked between two Grands Crus yet is something of a below-the-radar wine. Smoky and intense, with lovely precision and focus supported by textured tannins and lingering acidity. 2022-30.
94 Points
Vinous, Stephen Tanzer:
(January 2017) Healthy medium red. Captivating perfume of cranberry, raspberry, red cherry, clove, nutmeg and white pepper. Juicy and penetrating but utterly seamless too, conveying terrific intensity without any impression of weight. Offers a lovely combination of mineral cut and supple balancing flesh and refinement. This beauty is a splendid example of its vineyard and offers outstanding potential. 91-93 Points
Vinous, Stephen Tanzer: (January 2018) Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Deeply pitched scents of black cherry and menthol; showing less early perfume than the Clos des Ormes. Dark fruit flavors are sweet and concentrated, with ripe acidity giving energy and definition to the middle palate. A rather powerful, structured wine but with tannins that show the finesse of the year's better examples. The rising finish features aromatic dark fruits and lingering sweetness. This may well shut down in bottle but it's sexy right now. 92 Points

Dense and rich, lovely aromas, spice and earth. Cpmplete, detailed and promising. 95 Points
Vinous, Stephen Tanzer:
(Lignier is aging this wine--and his grand crus--in 40% new oak): Moderately saturated bright red. Deep, alluring aromas of cherry and crushed stone. A step up in intensity and penetration from the Clos des Ormes, offering juicy, savory flavors of strawberry, cherry, spices and stone. Nicely delineated, juicy premier cru with a firm spine and terrific floral length. Really captures the salty minerality of this well-placed premier cru. 90-93 Points

2015 Gevrey-Chambertin
The Star of the 2015 Vintage?
With most vintages certain parts of the Cote perform particularly well.
In 2015 it was Gevrey-Chambertin that is most frequently mentioned by the critics as the star of the show.
We have a fine range of Gevrey wines from Villages to Grand Cru available.

From the vineyards Les Chaliots and Aux Lavieres.
Wine Advocate - Neal Martin:
The 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges Village was cropped at just 25 hectoliters per hectare and saw 50% new oak (not that you could really tell). It had just a touch of reduction, although there appeared to be sufficient blackberry and bilberry fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin that fortunately do not detract from the delineation or precision, whilst I particular enjoy the sorbet-like freshness and delicacy demonstrated by the finish, thanks to the fineness of the tannin. Just an outstanding village cru from Felettig. 90-92 Points

Domaine Gilbert et Christine Felettig Nuits-St-Georges 2016

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": As I mentioned in the introduction, two-thirds of the blend for the Nuits AC bottling
come from vines on the Prémeaux side of the village, which were devastated by the frost, and one-third from the Vosne side, where the frost was virtually non-existent. Interestingly, despite the draconian yields on the Prémeaux side, the wine shows none of the structural coarseness of some badly-frosted wines, and this is another very, very strong and classy AC in the making. The
bouquet offers up a superb blend of red plums, black cherries, venison, raw cocoa, excellent soil tones, a dollop of mustard seed and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and again, quite sappy at the core, with ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, soil-driven and tangy finish.
Classy juice. 2024-2060.
