A not to be missed 2016 for lovers of Grand Cru Red Burgundy
"Most famous for their Bonnes-Mares and their 'Clos Marion', the family business of Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair was founded about 1979 when Jean-Louis Fougeray, the father of the current owners, a man who by day worked in administration and by night tending his vines, made his very first cuvée. It was from a quarter hectare of Marsannay vines - in the family since 1972 - this was the start for Domaine Fougeray."

"That Marsannay cuvée was only 500 bottles and Jean-Louis took them all to Paris to sell. Laurence Olliver (née Fougeray) says that her father was 'born to work in the vineyard, it was his passion'. If Jean-Louis took the first steps to commercialisation, it was his father (the grandfather of Laurence and her sister Evelyne) that sowed the seeds for the size of the current operation (18 hectares); he had worked with the Clair family of the renowned Clair-Daü estate and there was a strong bond of friendship. That bond continued into the next generation with Bernard Clair and Jean-Louis Fougeray."

"For family reasons that are best left in the Clair family, in 1986 Bernard Clair was retiring and decided that he would lease some vines to his friend Jean-Louis Fougeray who was by then already exploiting 11 hectares, rather than as expected pass them to the next generation of the Clairs. Those were not just any old vines, they included a special parcel of Bonnes-Mares, some Chambolle- Fougeray people Musigny and more Marsannay. In so doing, they grounded the re-named Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair - 'Beauclair' coming from a blend of Jean-Louis' wife's name and Clair."

"Day to day responsibility for the domaine now rests with Jean-Louis' daughter Laurence and her husband Patrice Olliver."

Today we feature the domaine's unique Bonnes-Mares. Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair are the only makers to bottle a Bonnes-Mares from the Morey-St-Denis side.

Of the 15.06 hectares of the Grand Cru Bonnes-Mares only 1.53 hectares lie in Morey-St-Denis. Interestingly there used to be a little more on the Morey side but as it was inside the walls of Clos de Tart, and belonged to the same owner, it was reclassified as Clos de Tart in 1965.

Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair are the only makers to bottle a Bonnes-Mares purely from the Morey-St-Denis side.

For the next few days we provide the opportunity for those who did not buy Pre Arrival, to secure some of the remaining 16 bottles at the same 25% discount. This has to be the perfect options wine!

Darren Harris:
There is only one maker of Bonnes-Mares from the Morey side and that is Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair. They farm 1.20 hectares of the old Clair-Dau vineyard and bottle the wine without any Chambolle fruit. (The other 0.32 hectares is blended with Chambolle Grapes in Bruno Clair's Bonnes-Mares). Needless to say that makes for an interesting and rare wine that few serious drinkers have had the pleasure to taste.
Very aromatic nose - red and black fruits, crushed minerals, violets, spices and a hint of earth. This has excellent volume with serious concentration and silky sweet 2016 fruit. The wine is powerful but not heavy - the tannins well coated and refined. More elegant than most Bonnes-Mares yet still with the drive and richness one expects from this Grand Cru. One for the cellar.

Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru 2015

It is not quite a monopole as Domaine des Lambrays own only 98% of this 8.84 ha Grand Cru. The other 0.18 belonging to Domaine Taupenot Merme.
The recent sale of the domaine to the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy group for around 80 million Euros has no doubt seen an injection of capital that will surely see the domaine return to its lofty position of yesteryear. Today it remains the largest parcel of Grand Cru vines in the Cote de Nuits belonging to a single owner.  However, considering the amount of Clos des Lambrays produced each year it is a gigantic investment.
Clos des Lambrays is the steepest of the Morey Grand Crus. What many do not know is that the vineyard has three climats, each bringing a different character to the final assemblage. The soil contains many rocks and is rich in iron oxide which explains the elegant, blue fruit and mineral style of the vineyard. Thierry Brouin, responsible for the resurgence of the domaine, has been engaged for the next few years and has produced an outstanding 2015 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru. It is arguably the finest Clos des Lambrays of the last 50 years.
John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: The 2015 Clos des Lambrays includes ninety-five percent whole clusters this year and is a stunning wine in the making. The bouquet is deep, pure and very expressive out of the blocks, soaring from the glass in a blaze of black plums, sweet cassis, espresso, woodsmoke, gamebird, raw cocoa, a great base of dark soil tones and a nice framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with laser like focus, great balance and grip and a very long, fine-grained and vibrant finish. This will take at least a decade to blossom, but it will be a great wine in the fullness of time. 2025-2075+.96+ Points
Tim Atkin MW: Made with 100% whole bunches, at it nearly always is, this is one of the most recognisable Burgundies of all in a blind tasting, with notes of peaty Islay malt whisky, sappy, stemmy tannins and complex, savoury, meaty red berry and tobacco notes. The underlying acidity brings a welcome freshness to the finish. 2022-30. 95 Points
