Frantin Malconsorts Dinner header
A very special dinner for lovers of great Burgundy
Les Malconsorts is an exceptional 1er Cru. Being located alongside La Tache and less than 400 metres from Romanee-Conti it comes as no surprise. Domaine du Clos Frantin own a substantial 1.76 ha parcel with a vine age of around 40 years. Jasper Morris MW says "Aux Malconsorts was first taken out of scrubland and planted with vines in 1610, relatively late for this part of the Cote. Nonetheless it is an exceptional vineyard, one of my three favourite premier crus along with Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses and Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St-Jacques."

The first vintage of Domaine du Clos Frantin Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts we imported was 2009. Each year since the wine has been one of our most popular products.

Now, after 9 vintages, we have decided it is time to do a very special dinner. We will serve all 9 vintages from 2009 to 2017. This is a rare opportunity to taste a serious vertical of one of Burgundy's most popular and highly regarded Premier Crus. For those with the wine in their cellar you can taste and gauge where your bottles are be at without raiding your own stocks.

The dinner will be at Ryne. Chef Donovan Cooke will prepare a matching 4-course menu.

Donovan Cooke For those of you who don't know Donovan he has quite a CV. Starting in Europe, he worked his way through the Savoy Hotel, Waterside Inn in Bray, Harvey's in London and La Cote St Jacques in Burgundy. In 1997 he shifted his focus to Melbourne where he co-opened the highly influential restaurant Est Est Est, followed by Luxe (awarded 3 hats in its first year) and Ondine (Best New Restaurant, The Age Good Food Guide).

Donovan was presented with the reigns of the Derby Restaurant and Bar at The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club. He served as Chef de Cuisine for the next six and a half years. He has  returned to Melbourne to start this latest venture - Ryne. To view Ryne's website click here.

The Domaine du Clos Frantin Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Malconsorts is probably our biggest selling serious Burgundy. The location of the vineyard alongside La Tache makes for serious, age-worthy wines that are often equal or better than many Grand Crus.

The domaine is the largest owner of Malconsorts, with a 1.7766 ha plot located in the middle of the vineyard. Maison Albert Bichot has owned the plot of Aux Malconsorts since 1964, when they acquired the Grivelet estate including vineyards and the Clos Frantin chai and mansion in Vosne-Romanee.

James Suckling Tasting Report:
Beautiful crushed roses with an array of fresh raspberries and red cherries, as well as light mocha and oak spices in the background. The palate has excellent tannin maturity and depth. A bold, explosive finish. This is exceptional. This elegant vintage has delivered a wine with real clarity and detail. But still needs some time. Try from 2024. 94-95 Points
Tim Atkin MW: The Bichot holdings run to 1.75 hectares and cover both the upper and lower parts of the Premier Cru. This is a sturdy, almost austere expression of the site with serious tannins, dense, chewy black fruits and a touch of mint. Very well made, but needs considerable time in bottle. 2028-38. 94 Points
Jasper Morris: Significantly rich deep purple. A wonderful richness of flavour sweeps across the palate. It is still held in check a bit by the wood. A solid, rich, firm wine at the finish, with impressive density. 94 Points
