Balance, purity, intensity. Great wine!
Grand Cru White Burgundy - it is certainly becoming expensive. The reasons are simple - the quantity produced is small (especially over the last 10 years) and worldwide demand is huge. There is just not enough to go around.
Domaine Jean Chartron are one of the jewels in our crown. The domaine owns some spectacular vineyards with very old vines and produces tremendous White Burgundy at all levels.
Steen Ohman, winehog.org said of his visit July 11, 2018 to taste the 2017's "I have tasted quite a few bottles of Domaine Jean Chartron over the last years, and seen the quality improve and blossom - and found the wines very interesting - and notching the top end wines in some cases. I therefore decided to visit the estate, to check out the range in the 2017 vintage.
To be honest I was surprised how far Jean-Michel Chartron have reached quality wise .. the 2017s are tremendous wines, and is confirming Chartron as one of the new top contenders strongly supported by a lineup of great vineyards - it does help with a Grand Cru or two.
Vineyards create and forms estates ... and make no mistake, top 1er crus and Grand Crus are quite crucial to establish the history, image and position of a top estate.
Taking the 2017s from Domaine Jean Chatron I find a fine portfolio of whites - and a few exiting reds. The style is focused, pure and relatively tight with a good acidity and freshness. The wines have a good expression of minerality and freshness - true Puligny character if you like - without a very strong producer "signature" like for instance Domaine Leflaive.
The wines are balanced and pure ... with the terroir expressed in a clear and natural way.
Bottom line I see progress and the style is getting more and more defined and refined ... putting Chartron firmly on the new map of Puligny."
Today we offer three vintages of Batard-Montrachet from stock. The wines are not cheap but late on Friday I saw the 2017 Batard from Henri Boillot being offered at over $1400.00 a bottle. I had to catch my breath. Grand Cru White Burgundy is never inexpensive.
All are available at a 15% discount.

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The 2015 Chartron family's Bâtard-Montrachet is more structured out of the blocks than the Corton Charlie, but this is also a higher octane wine and is really a powerful version of this cru in this vintage. The bouquet delivers a youthful blend of apple, pear, white flowers, chalky soil tones and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is very deep, powerful and full-bodied, with a rock solid core, sound framing acids and a very long, youthful and muscular finish. Jean-Michel Chartron trades grapes with another famous neighbor for his Bâtard grapes, and though I did not visit this other estate on this trip, I would guess that they started picking just a bit later than the Chartrons in 2015. 2017-2035. 93 Points
Decanter: A classic Bâtard, with a nose of white peach, apple, pear, iodine, subtle smoke and new oak. It has a rich palate impression with a lovely alliance of texture and tension. Drinking Window 2018 - 2038. 94 Points

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The Chartron's parcel in Batard-Montrachet was devastated by frost damage and the crop was off by a full 70% in 2016. It is too bad there is so little wine here in this vintage, as the wine has turned out very well indeed. The bouquet is very pure and still very primary in personality, with full body, a rock solid core of fruit, racy acids and a very long, broad-shouldered and nascently complex finish. This is very early days for this wine still, bit it will prove to be outstanding. 2023-2050. 94+ Points
Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2016 Bâtard Montrachet Grand Cru was reduced from four to three barrels because of the frost. It has a fine peach skin, red apples and cold slate scented bouquet that opens with confidence with aeration. The palate is fresh on the entry, very focused and with a keen line of acidity. Very harmonious with superb salinity on the finish that keeps you coming back. Due to be bottled by Easter, try and bag one of the 750 odd bottles. 94-96 Points

 Steen Ohman Winehog.org:
The Batard-Montrachet is from the middle lower part of the vineyard - just on the border between Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet - but as the estate located in Puligny. The nose is airy and vivid - notes of apple, peach and almonds. Fine hint of citrus infused minerality .. lovely depth and complexity - although not rivalling the magnificent Chevalier-Montrachet. An intense yet refined Batard in my view - the 2017s are truly delightful when harvested in time. 94-95
Jasper Morris MW: 4 barrels in all. Clear bright pale colour. The nose is more reticent but it is the fruit and not the oak which speaks. This is very steely, with excellent intensity, very focussed, wood showing just at the back, a properly concentrated wine with a fine future. Tasted: October 2018. 93-96 Points
