Perrieres - quality set in stone...
There are a lot of Perrieres vineyards in Burgundy - Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-St-Georges, Corton, Beaune, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, St-Aubin, Montagny and St-Romain all have a vineyard so-named.
Why is it so?
The name Perrieres comes from the French word for stone - pierres. What these vineyards all have in common is a preponderance of stone in the soil. Burgundy is famous for its limestone which is used for building. If you drive north out of Beaune along the D974 you will see some of the quarries and businesses processing the stone.
It is this same limestone that determines the style quality of these vineyards. These rocky soils provide minerality and freshness both in white and red wines. Limestone adds an elegance not found on the heavier-clay based soils seen in parts of the cote.
Today we feature 10 different wines from the Perrieres vineyards of Burgundy. We have quite a few more available so click this link to see the full range.
If you like stylish wines with freshness and vibrancy these are for you.
Domaine Jomain Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
Normally $169.50
Special $144.50
Darren Harris: Puligny-Montrachet provides a variety of terroirs and wine styles. The Grand Crus and the Premier Crus alongside are rich and powerful. But travel a little further to the north of the commune and you will find vineyards that produce wines that are more delicate and mineral. One of these is Les Perrieres, named after the quarries. Perrieres is a wine of finesse. It is not a blockbuster. It is the dancer of Puligny-Montrachet. Light on its feet yet still absolutely absorbing.
The 2016 Perrieres from Jomain is long, fine and very fresh. Loaded with minerals. It is acid and racy with a gorgeous intensity and persistence. My type of wine. A terrific example of what makes Puligny-Montrachet the go-to commune for White Burgundy.
Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": Less attack, more refinement to this faintly spiced and very attractive nose. More depth, more minerality, more intensity - this starts a little less generous than the villages wine, but there is more of everything here. Not an overt acidity, but ingraining flavour and with plenty of balance. Very good - to wait for again. Super length.
Domaine Jean Chartron St Aubin 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
Normally $115.50
Special $98.15
7 bottles available
John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The premier cru of Perrières was more heavily frosted than Murgers in 2016 and the production here was down by about half in this vintage. The wine has turned out very nicely chez Chartron, offering up lovely precision on both the nose and palate and even a bit more core than the very good Murgers. The nose is a fine blend of apple, pear, chalky minerality, spring flowers and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid, with lovely balance, bright acids and fine cut and grip on the long, complex and zesty finish. Fine juice. 2019-2035.
Domaine Jean Chartron St Aubin 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2017
Normally $121.95
Special $103.95
John Gilman "View from the Cellar":
In the 2016 vintage, the Perrières vineyard was the far more heavily-damaged parcels in St. Aubin from Jean-Michel, and I was very happy to see the wine showing so beautifully this year. The nose is pure and complex, jumping from the glass in a mix of apple, pear, pastry cream, lovely limestone minerality, a touch of fresh almond, vanillin oak and a top note of spring flowers. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, complex and very refined, with a fine core, lovely balance and grip and a long, focused and classy finish. 2018-2045+. 91+ Points
Domaine Bernard Millot Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres 2016
Normally $209.95
Special $178.50
10 bottles available
Darren Harris: Fresh nose of white fruits, flowers and stony minerality. A little more reserved than the 1er Cru cuvee. Pure and refined but deeply flavoured and really light on its feet as is typical of the wines from this domaine. Great acidity and freshness culminating in a long mineral driven finish. Seriously good.
Domaine Robert Ampeau Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 1996
Normally $335.00
Special $284.50

Domaine Jean Chauvenet Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
750ml Normally $199.95
Special $169.95
1500ml Magnum Normally $399.90
Special $339.90
12 bottles and 2 Magnums available
Darren Harris:
Chauvenet own parcels in seven Nuits Premier Crus including Les Vaucrains, Les Damodes and Les Bousselots but it is their small 0.23 hectare parcel in Les Perrieres that has me gob-smacked in 2016. The wine combines red and black fruits in a lifted, aromatic nose with minerals in spades. It is fresh and vibrant yet deeply flavoured with subtle spices playing in the background. 1/3 new oak contributes to the freshness and ensures the wine remains lifted and aromatic. This is really fine NSG Premier Cru with an elegant character yet never losing its stamp of origin. Only 3 barrels produced in 2016. Very fine quality.
Domaine Bertagna Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perriere Monopole 2016
Normally $239.95
Special $206.95
24 bottles available
Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss: This vineyard, wholly owned by the producer, lies next to the north end of Clos de Vougeot. Old vines and low yields give the wine a dense texture. The ripe, smoky character is dark, firm and needs several years more aging. Drink from 2024.
93 Points
Darren Harris: A monopoly of the domaine measuring a substantial 2.2 hectares in size. The vineyard is surrounded on three sides by Musigny, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses and Clos Vougeot. Complex nose displaying wild strawberry, violets and an array of spices and herbs. Multi-layered with an enticing note of musk in the background. Texturally interesting with a long, refined finish displaying minerals and fine grained tannin. This is always one of the most intellectual wines at Bertagna that seems to combine a little of the three serious vineyards that surround it.
Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
Normally $199.95
Special $169.95
2 bottles available
Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières has a more floral and mineral-driven bouquet, a bit of light after the broodier Roncier. The palate is medium-bodied with a confit-like entry, quite intense with concentrated with veins of fresh fig discretely interwoven into the red berry fruit. There is sense of compactness here and it is only in the last third that it stretches its arms. This is a lovely Les Perrières from Chevillon. 92-94 Points
Domaine Marchand-Grillot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru La Perriere 2016
Normally $220.95
Special $187.50
20 bottles available
Darren Harris: Located below Mazis-Chambertin Marchand-Grillot's Perrieres always sings of its terroir. We have layered flavours of cherries and plums but most of all cool stonyness on the nose. The palate is zippy, fresh and focused with deep flavours and a sense of relative lightness. The tannins are very fine and coat the fruit. A tremendous wine in 2016.
Louis Latour Corton Perrieres Grand Cru 2015
Normally $252.00
Special $214.00
2 bottles available
James Suckling Tasting Report: The ripe fruit is evident on the nose with complex cinnamon and nutmeg notes. Medium to full body and gorgeous depth of fruit that finishes soft and classy. Savory. Give it three to four years but already a joy to taste. 95 Points
Wine Spectator: Bright cherry, black currant, blueberry and spice flavors ply this dense, juicy red. There is also a firm, tannic side that will need time to integrate. With air, more fruit emerges and the tannins are tamed somewhat. Offers a long, firm finish. Best from 2021 through 2038. 94 Points
