New Releases from Domaine Gauby - Superstar of the South! A super sticky from Alsace

Gauby 2012 releases header

"Within two decades of bottling their own wine, an aversion to overproduction plus a passionate affinity with the local soils have made Domaine Gauby the best estate in the Roussillon." Clive Coates, The Great Wines of France

We are delighted to present the new releases from Domaine Gauby including the majestic 2010 MUNTADA.

Those of you who purchased and have tasted the 2009 reds will know what an outstanding winemaker Gerard Gauby is. La Revue du Vin de France raves about him again in the 2013 Guide saying he has "reinvented viticulture in the south".

Domaine Gauby is located 30 km southwest of Perpignan just outside the town of Calce. This area of France, on the border of Spain, is Roussillon.

Gauby Muntada 2010 It is a beautiful and rugged part of the world. It is still very unspoiled, wild, rocky and dry. There are a lot of rugged hills with soils composed of limestone, marl and shale - ideal for cultivation of grapes.

The Gauby family established their domaine in 1983. There are around 45 hectares of vines scattered in parcels over the hillsides around the village. Gerard Gauby has worked hard to enlarge the

estate from the 5 hectares purchased by his grandfather and today the vines include some 120 year old Carignan as well as very old Mouvedre, Grenache and Syrah.

Gerard Gauby is now firmly established as one of the superstars of the south-west. He believes that the superb quality of his wines is determined more by the character and quality of the grapes that are harvested rether than what happens in the chais. "One of our greatest advantages in the complexity of our local soils". The best wines come from schist as the vines must go deep to find nourishment. it also keeps the acidity high.

"I don't like sur-maturite. I'm looking for fresh fruit. Burgundy is my reference. I want the same purity in my wines" say Gerard. These are fine, complex and thought-provoking wines.

Kuentz-Bas Riesling VT 2004

Kuentz-Bas Riesling Cuvee Caroline Vendanges Tardive 2004

This wine comes from one parcel located in the lieux-dit Letzenberg, a fabulous sector for producing VT and SGN wines. The soil is composed of marl and limestone with a lot of rock.

The grapes were picked on 15 November 2004. Alcohol: 11%, residual sugar 120 g/l, Acidity 5g/l.

This wine is technically a Selection de Grains Nobles but was declassified down to fill an order. We picked up the balance. The nett result is that it is about half of the price of what the same wine would be if it said Selection de Grains Nobles in the label.

Tasting note: This wine is actually a declassified SGN - residual sugar is 120 grams per litre! Fresh, ripe Riesling nose. On the palate the minerality of the vintage shows balancing the complex favours of candied fruits, botrytis and a little honey. Beautifully balanced it is all given focus by the fine acid finish. A bargain!

If the wine was labelled Selection de Grains Nobles it would cost twice as much!

Trust me - this is a great sticky!
