Wines have arrived. Pre Arrival prices will be removed at 4pm on Monday 26 August 2019

Since Jerome Castagnier won the prestigious Young Winemaker of the Year Award in 2016 demand for his wines has skyrocketed.

It is an address I enjoy visiting as Jerome is an amusing fellow and his wines always look terrific from barrel.

You could be forgiven for thinking this is a large domaine but it certainly isn't. Jerome is just fortunate to have an unusually high percentage of Grand Crus.

Castagnier's 2016's are full of fresh, vibrant fruit with deep colour and flavours. Each vintage they simply get better and better.
We have added some superb new reviews from highly respected critic Jasper Morris MW.

Those in the know consider this a domaine to follow.

The wines have arrived. At 4pm next Monday we will remove the Pre Arrival Prices. So if you wish to save 15% get your order in soon. There's not much left!

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016
1500ml Magnum Landed Price $613.00
Pre Arrival Price $521.00
3 Magnums available
Castagnier Charmes-Chambertin
Jasper Morris MW: Extremely dense purple, a slightly meaty nose, with dark red fruit too. Concentrated, tight, strongly grained tannins, very rich centre to it and good length. Perhaps just a little foursquare. 92-94 Points

Wine Spectator, BirDungy: Very ripe raspberry and cherry nose, with flowers and earth. A beautiful nose with hints of tea. Sweet ripe cherry fruit, with strong acidity balancing it out, and tannins just so. A beautifully balanced wine. Excellent.

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2016
1500ml Magnum Landed Price $613.00
Pre Arrival Price $521.00
2 Magnums available

Castagnier Roche Label new It is often a toss-up amongst our clients between the Clos de la Roche and Clos St-Denis. For some reason I do not have a tasting note for the Clos de la Roche 2016. The Clos de la Roche is usually slighly darker and deeper than the Clos St-Denis with a little more richness and weight. Neal Martin of Vinous described the 2015 as a "wonderful Grand Cru".

Jasper Morris MW: Glowing purple, plenty of oak, heady but balanced. Less explosive than his Clos St-Denis, indeed quite discreet. This needs to digest its oak which it will. Blueberry and bilberry fruit, a very finely balanced distinguished wine. 94-97 Points

Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2016
750ml Landed Price $516.50
Pre Arrival Price $439.00
1500ml Magnum Landed Price $1033.00
Pre Arrival Price $878.00
3 bottles and 6 Magnums available
Castagnier Bonnes-mares labelI don't have a tasting note for this wine as it is one of the rarest wines from Castagnier and not often available for tasting.
I anticipate this will combine the deep colours and flavours of Castagnier's wines with the wonderful aromatics of 2016 and the power of the vineyard. A perfect wine to cellar in Magnum!

Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016
1500ml Magnum Landed Price $799.95
Pre Arrival Price $679.95
3 Magnums available

Castagnier Mazis label Jancis Robinson: Cask sample. Mid purplish crimson. Perfumed with deep, red-cherry fruit and some sweet oak spice. Notable freshness, and finesse in the tannins. Gentle and persistent. 17/20

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2016
Landed Price $217.50
Pre Arrival Price $184.95
14 bottles available

Castagnier Cazetiers Label Jancis Robinson: Cask sample. Mid purplish crimson. As I have found quite often in this vintage, the fragrance soars from the glass: lightly spiced cherry fruit to the fore. On the palate, a little more spicy. Definite, rounded tannins that still give some chew on the finish. Excellent harmony and good length. 16.5/20

Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Aux Cheseaux 2016
Landed Price $190.95
Pre Arrival Price $162.50
22 bottles available

Castagnier Morey label Jasper Morris MW: Rich dense concentrated purple, plenty of oak but the fruit easily wins, incredible density. Ripe dark cherries, plums, dark raspberries, a nice touch of oak, rich but absolutely beautiful, and the finish is exceptional. 94 Points

Chambolle-Musigny Cuvee Jeanne 2016
Landed Price $133.50
Pre Arrival Price $113.50
5 bottles available

Castagnier Chambolle Jeanne labelJasper Morris MW: From the village part of Aux Echanges. The 2016 is named (for this vintage only) for Jérôme Castagnier's daughter born in 2016. 3 barrels, one third of normal, but Jérôme thinks his best ever. Certainly enormously intense black purple colour and a very intense nose too of dark brambly fruit. Sublime rich supple explosive fruit, very dark in style, no great oak take up, long, sensual, concentrated. Tense and with impressive density.  92 Points

Gevrey-Chambertin 2016
Landed Price $133.50
Pre Arrival Price $113.50
23 bottles available

Castagnier Gevrey label Jasper Morris MW: From 60-year-old vines in Les Seuvrées. Excellent lively mid purple, very fresh nose, lots of energy. This has real energy, all red fruit, cherry kernel notes and a lively fresh finish. Indeed excellent persistence. 91 Points

Bourgogne Rouge 2016
Landed Price $70.50
Pre Arrival Price $59.95
53 bottles available

Castagnier Bourgogne Label Jasper Morris MW: From below Gevrey. Very dense purple, plump extra ripe fruit, richer and denser than the Coteaux Bourguignons with excellent acidity, finishing more on red fruit, so avoids being top heavy. The most structured of Castagnier's three generic wines, much more for keeping. 89 Points

Coteaux Bourguignons Pinot Noir 2016
Landed Price $44.50
Pre Arrival Price $37.95
23 bottles available

Castagnier Coteaux Bourguignons 2 Jasper Morris MW:From the commune of Morey. All pinot, fresh purple colour, joyous bouncing fruit. Vibrant, juicy, fresh with a chalky finish. Really pleasing. 87 Points

Castagnier 2016 Dinner Ocha
Domaine Jerome Castagnier 2016 Dinner at Ocha
Thursday 5 September 2019

Jerome Castagnier is one of the most interesting producers in our portfolio. Originally a professional trumpet player with the Guard Republicain, the national band of France, Jerome took over the family domaine just over a decade ago. Armed with a raft of great vineyards he has turned Domaine Castagnier into a rising star. Even so, the domaine deserves even more attention than it currently receives.

A few years ago he was awarded Young Winemaker of the Year. Always smiling and with a super sense of humour, Jerome found this quite amusing as he felt he was a little too old to be Young Winemaker. Never-the-less it further confirmed his status in Burgundy.

It has been three years since we have presented a Castagnier Wine Dinner. The gorgeous new 2016's have just arrived and I thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase Jerome's wines again.

We'll start with a pair of Whites from Puligny-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. Then we'll progress from Coteaux Bourguignons up to 4 red Grand Crus with numerous stops along the way.

There are 5 Grand Crus in this dinner and I don't need to emphasize that this is a very good opportunity to savour wines that are becoming increasingly expensive.

We only have 12 seats for this dinner so if you'd like to book in and taste these wines over a lovely dinner at Ocha please do so quickly.

The wine list:

Puligny-Montrachet 2016
Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2016

Coteaux Bourguignons Pinot Noir 2016
Bourgogne Rouge 2016

Bouley vs Buffet Dinner header

You've got to love VOLNAY. Bouley vs Buffet 2016 Volnay Dinner at Ryne
Wednesday 28 August 2019

Volnay - it's always been known for its aromatics and finesse. In the past it was considered a light wine but in recent years we have seen a renaissance. Great 21st century Volnay still retains its elegance but has much more concentration and interest.

The 2016 vintage universally produced the best Volnay I have seen. The delightful fruit of the vintage suits the Volnay terroir and pretty much every Premier Cru Volnay I have tasted has left me with a positive impression. The wines are quite simply delicious.

To understand Burgundy you need to compare and discuss. What better way to do it than with a comparative tasting of like wines from two producers? Our You've got to love VOLNAY: Bouley vs Buffet 2016 Volnay Dinner features 11 Premier Crus from these two producers. All of the wines are from 2016 and the final bracket of 4 will be a direct comparison of Volnay's big guns - Champans and Clos des Chenes. I might be sneaky and serve these four wines blind.

Before we get to those wines we'll look at 7 other Premier Crus including two Monopoles - one from each domaine. We'll also taste the Bouley Santenots which lies entirely in the boundaries of Meursault yet is always labeled as Volnay (ah, those French!). This will give a picture of the varying terroirs of Volnay and the different style of each domaine.

Our Burgundy Dinners are designed not just to be enjoyable but to increase your understanding of the world's greatest wine region. To assist we will provide extensive tasting notes and welcome discussion and questions. So if you would like to try some wonderful 2016 Premier Crus and pick up a few pointers along the way come and join us.

The dinner will be at one of our favourite venues - Ryne - in north Fitzroy. Chef Donovan Cooke will create 4 courses to match the wines.
