A Cotes-du-Rhone of epic proportions
Le Clos du Caillou, a 53 hectare wine estate with Côtes-du-Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations, is located in Courthézon in the South of France.

The property came in possession of the Pouizin family in 1956. Until 1996 the property was run by Claude Pouizin, who until 1993 sold most of his yield to negociants. In 1996 his daughter Sylvie and son-in-law Jean-Denis Vacherons took charge and the quality of the wines has skyrocketed.

The property has 9 hectares of AOC Chateauneuf-du-Pape. These are on the sandier soils of the appellation's northeast sector in the lieux-dits of Les Bedines, Guigasse and Pignan, right alongside Rayas.

The domain also makes extraordinarily good Cotes du Rhone from 44 ha of vineyards.
Joe Czerwinski of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate says "On my visit, it was great to meet the young Marilou Vacheron, back to join the family estate after five years of business school, and the longtime (since 2002) winemaker Bruno Gaspard. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2010. Gaspard compares the 2016s to 2010 or 2005, he says, "but better."

The Cotes-du-Rhone Les Quartz comes from the oldest vineyards just outside the border of AOC Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The story goes that in the 1930's, the owner, armed with a hunting rifle, refused to receive experts seeking to delimit the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Thus, Clos du Caillou remains a kind of enclave, with many of the very old vines classified as Cotes-du-Rhone, rather than Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as they would have been! Crazy!

If you are a fan of great Southern Rhone reds this is a must-have wine that far exceeds it appellation. It is a Cotes-du-Rhone that as the Wines Advocate says "puts many Châteauneufs to shame".

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
Exceeding my prebottling expectations, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Les Quartz is a terrific effort that puts many Châteauneufs to shame. Aromas of crushed stone and raspberries mark the nose of this 85/15 Grenache-Syrah blend. It's full-bodied and rich, with hints of chocolaty ripeness balanced by citrus zest on the lengthy finish. 93 Points
Jeb Dunnuck:
The 2016 Côtes du Rhône Quartz offers a rare level of minerality and depth for a Côtes du Rhône, and anyone that loves southern Rhônes should buy bottles of this. Black raspberries, hints of cassis, crushed rock and dried garrigue characteristics flow to a rich, concentrated - even structured - effort that has the telltale elegance and purity of the estate. With ripe tannin, solid freshness and a great, great finish, it's going to drink nicely for a decade. 93 Points

A serious Chateauneuf from 100 year old Grenache vines.
Wine Spectator: This has great energy from the start, with notes of bay leaf, warm brick and juniper leading the way, backed by a solid core of red currant, raspberry and plum coulis flavors. The long finish lets sanguine and iron accents flow through while still leaving plenty of room for the fruit. Best from 2020 through 2035. 96 Points

Jeb Dunnuck: The 2015 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Cornelia Constanza checks in as 100% Grenache from a tiny parcel of 100 year old vines planted in the famed la Crau lieu-dit. It offers lots of Kirsch liqueur, mulled-strawberries, garrigue and floral nuances in a medium to full-bodied, elegant, graceful style. It's already delicious and should keep through 2025. This cuvee also saw a small amount of stems and was partially vinified in new tulip shaped concrete tanks.
