It would be fair to say that Charmes-Chambertin is generally not Burgundy's greatest Grand Cru. However, every now and then one encounters a wine that really transcends its status.
At last Tuesday evening's Domaine des Varoilles Dinner the top wine of the night was their Charmes-Chambertin 2016. I was not surprised as when I tasted at the domaine last year the wine blew me away.
Charmes-Chambertin can be a little light, a bit insignificant and not that complex but boy, does this wine perform. Domaine des Varoilles secret lies in a combination of factors. Firstly 2016 was a small vintage with low cropping. On top of that you have old vines that add intensity and texture and judicious use of oak adding structure, length and complexity. Few Charmes-Chambertin deliver at this level.
Another great feature is the price. With Chambertin and Clos de Beze reaching jaw-dropping levels, a Grand Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin for under $300 is something of a bargain.
We have 15 bottles of the Domaine des Varoilles Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 remaining. I recommend it highly. The wine will cellar for at least 20 years but being from 2016 there is certainly considerable pleasure to be had in the short term.

Darren Harris: Charmes-Chambertin remains a bit of an enigma. It is by no means the most popular Grand Cru of Gevrey but when it is good, it can be very, very good. Domaine des Varoilles Charmes-Chambertin is a supremely impressive wine. It is bigger and much deeper than all of the Premier Crus. The nose displays dark fruits, smoke and minerals. On the palate there is more with dark chocolate and a rich, creamy texture. There is new oak (60% used here) and some powerful but not coarse tannins. Needs some time in the cellar. Great Charmes!

Domaine Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017
5 bottles available
Claude Dugat has long been a respected and beloved figure in Burgundy, while the wines of his eponymous domaine have captivated the world.
While the Dugat family traces its roots in Gevrey back to the 19th century, it was not until 1955 when Claude's father Maurice purchased the historic landmark Grange des Dimes and converted the stone barn into a winery that the family domaine was born. The family farms some 6ha throughout Gevrey, with many of the region's oldest vines.

It would be accurate to say that the wines of Domaine Claude Dugat have a cult following. Production is tiny and wines are allocated and sold in a blink of the eye. Jasper Morris MW say "A tiny domaine with cult status, and the quality to match....The key to quality here is the raw material, from vines which naturally produce small berries through control of vigour."

We are pleased to have a tiny allocation of some 2017's and today we present the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.

Vinous Media - Neal Martin:
The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru demands a little coaxing from the glass, with dark cherries, raspberry preserve and briary aromas, gradually unfurling but never fully letting go like the Chapelle-Chambertin. The palate is very well structured with a firm backbone, quite Mazoyères-like in style, the mineralité flooding out towards the second half that displays an insistent grip and impressive length. Excellent. 92-94 Points

Landed Price $1325.00.00
