Sublime Corton-Charlemagne from Domaine Jean Chartron

Sublime Corton-Charlemagne from Domaine Jean Chartron

Corton-Charlemagne of exceptional quality

It seems to me that there are two classes of Corton-Charlemagne. There are those traditional makers who produce lean, strawy wines that struggle to develop into anything really complex.

Then there is a new breed of maker that has realized that with care and attention in the vineyard and top class winemaking they can produce Corton-Charlemagne to rival the Grand Crus of Chassagne- and Puligny-Montrachet.

Domaine Jean Chartron certainly falls in the second group. His
C-C always impresses me with its intensity and complexity. It never disguises its terroir but it has that little bit extra that makes it truly special. Where it not for the fact that the domaine has Batard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet this would easily be the jewel at the top of their crown.

We have three vintages of the wine in stock. If you love great Grand Cru Burgundy you certainly should give them a try. All are available at a 15% discount.

Chartron Corton-Charlemagne label hi John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The 2015 Corton-Charlemagne from Domaine Chartron is very, very strong this year and I actually prefer it to the Bâtard in this vintage! The bouquet is outstanding, soaring from the glass in a complex blend of pear, lemon, tangerine, chalky minerality, fresh almond, vanillin oak and just a hint in the upper register of the honeycomb to come with bottle age. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and racy in personality, with a rock solid core, excellent focus and grip and a very long, pure and vibrant finish. Excellent wine. 2018-2040. 94+ Points

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": The first wine tasted from barrel. Weight, faint yellow citrus, yet modest. A little CO2, layers and layers of flavour - massive - wow - but never lumpen. Fabulous!

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The Chartrons lost forty percent of their production in Corton-Charlemagne in 2016. The wine has turned out beautifully, offering up a complex nose of pear, apple, hazelnuts, a touch of iodine, a fine base of chalky soil tones, a touch of honeycomb and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with a rock solid core, impressive cut and grip and a long, nascently complex and focused finish. This is nicely round on the attack and snappy on the backend, which augurs very well for its future development. 2023-2060. 94+ Points

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": The first wine tasted from barrel. Bright, mineral, saline and citrus. A little gas, but beautiful silky texture and a hint of fat. Wide, wide, wide. Slowly fading in the finish. A classic, mineral Charlemagne, and excellent.

Steen Ohman Winehog.org:
The Corton Charlie is intense, long and quite tightly knit. The nose offer quite exotic white orchard fruits - cool yet with a nice genrosity. Lovely chalky minerality - fine balancing acidity - quite filigree and vivid. An impressive Charlie in the making. 93-
94 Points
John Gilman "View from the Cellar": I like Jean-Michel Chartron's 2017 Corton-Charlemagne quite well this year, but it cannot quite keep pace with the stunning quality of the previous two premier crus. The bouquet is pure and has a nice touch of reserve to it in 2017,offering up scents of apple, pear, a touch ofpassion fruit, chalky minerality, fresh almond, orange zest and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and complex, with good focus and cut, racy acids and a long, nascently complex and promising finish. This is going to be very, very good. 2022-2055+. 93 Points

Pavillon Corton-Charlemagne
Domaine du Pavillon Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2017
Here's another Corton-Charlemagne you must try!
James Suckling Tasting Report:
A very classic Corton-Charlemagne that's very powerful, but very cool and fresh with a super mineral personality. Concentrated but finely etched palate with great acidity that drives the very long, stony finish. 96 Points
Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report: More depth, a touch of oak for sure but here is fine clarity. Vibrant, even more intense but never too intense. Long, long, long - this is a line of beautiful flavour. Ooh this is really great - and this is a wine that just gets better with time.
Decanter Magazine:
Like fellow Beaune-based négociant Joseph Drouhin, Albert Bichot source their Domaine du Pavillon Corton-Charlemagne from Les Languettes on the Aloxe-Corton side of the hill. This is another wine with quite a bit of power, as well as sweet oak and patisserie notes, but there's a delightful freshness and zip at its core. (Drink between 2020-2027). 94 Points
