Wine Advocate: Released in October of last year, Pol Roger's 2008 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is showing brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of waxy citrus rind, dried white flowers, freshly baked bread, iodine and honeyed yellow apple. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and vinous, with a deep and multidimensional core, broad structural shoulders and considerable concentration, girdled by tangy acids and displaying a youthfully frothy but incipiently fine mousse. The finish is long and intense. This is a terrific rendition of this reliably superb cuvée and well worth seeking out. 97 Points

The blend of Sir Winston Churchill is a closely guarded secret. I ask d'Harcourt every time we taste a new vintage. 'I have not been drunk enough yet to tell you!' he replies. I'll keep working on it. Elusive details aside, Sir Winston steps up with a characterful presence in the powerful 2006 season, with pinot noir commanding a confident lead in spicy fig, mirabelle plum and red apple fruit, intricately toned by the bright lemon, grapefruit and crunchy pear of chardonnay. With time in the glass, a gorgeous presence of red cherry fruit rises and sweeps in a captivating display of youthful fruit integrity. Time moves slowly in Pol Roger's deep, cold cellars, and the tell-tale signs of maturity in nutmeg and almond are but fleeting glimpses, its age declared more dramatically in gorgeously seamless and silky texture. The signature, salty chalk minerality of the greatest crus of the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims lays out a finish of outstanding line and enduring length, with a bright acid line that defines the finesse of the house and promises medium-term potential. A highlight of the season.

Wine Advocate: Disgorged in March 2017, the 2012 Brut Blanc de Blancs is excellent, delivering a complex bouquet of warm pastry, dried white flowers, lemon oil and some smoky, gently reductive top notes. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a rich but precise core of fruit that reveals all the concentration of the vintage but is elegantly rendered, underpinned by tangy acids and concluding with a precise, chalky finish. Pol Roger Brut NV label Tyson Stelzer: Pol Roger's infamous 'White Foil' is an attractive and refreshing apéritif, and the 2009 base has transcended its season and delivered the freshest, purest expression of this cuvée I can remember - the ultimate validation of 15 years of winery upgrades. On first release, it sang with all the youthful jubilation of lemon zest, crunchy apple and pear, harmonising with finely honed chalk minerality. Now, towards the end of its release, it is still every bit as impressive, showing its maturity in toasted marshmallow, wild honey and nutmeg flavours and a creamy mouthfeel. The new-found palate line and persistence in this cuvée is singly the most laudable achievement of the new Pol Roger. 94 Points

For the Love of Port: 
Possibly the darkest and most extracted color of the night, opaque and inky. This is always a tremendous Vintage Port and way up in the 1985 pecking order. A fragrant floral bouquet with boysenberry and kirsch dominating the air space. Great concentration of fruit, a freshness that stands out with primary plum and ripe, off dry blackcurrant flavors. Packed with intensity, in a youthful, fruit forward, muscular frame. The medium-body of this Dow belies the density that gives it a more massive feeling. At the same time it can seem light and glides effortlessly across the palate. The persistence of the layered finish is a significant strength. Drink now with a long decant time, or cellar for up to another quarter century. 93 Points

Join us for a romp throught the Premier Cru Vineyards of Volnay
 
Volnay - it's always been know for its aromatics and finesse. In the past it was considered a light wine but in recent years we have seen a renaissance. Great 21st century Volnay still retains its elegance but has much more concentration and interest.
 
The 2016 vintage universally produced the best Volnay I have seen. The delightful fruit of the vintage suits the Volnay terroir and pretty much every Premier Cru Volnay I have tasted has left me with a positive impression. The wines are quite simply delicious.
 
To understand Burgundy you need to compare and discuss. What better way to do it than with a comparative tasting of like wines from two producers? Our You've got to love VOLNAY: Bouley vs Buffet 2016 Volnay Dinner features 11 Premier Crus from these two producers. All of the wines are from 2016 and the final bracket of 4 will be a direct comparison of Volnay's big guns - Champans and Clos des Chenes. I might be sneaky and serve these four wines blind.
 
Before we get to those wines we'll look at 7 other Premier Crus including two Monopoles - one from each domaine. We'll also taste the Bouley Santenots which lies entirely in the boundaries of Meursault yet is always labeled as Volnay (ah, those French!). This will give a picture of the varying terroirs of Volnay and the different style of each domaine.
 
Our Burgundy Dinners are designed not just to be enjoyable but to increase your understanding of the world's greatest wine region. To assist we will provide extensive tasting notes and welcome discussion and questions. So if you would like to try some wonderful 2016 Premier Crus and pick up a few pointers along the way come and join us.
