On the third Sunday of November the Hospices de Beaune holds its annual wine auction. The event is steeped in history with its origins dating back to the 15th century.
The 2012 auction will be the 152nd. Around 700 barrels of wine are typically offered each year (although in 2012 the quantity is only 512). They are produced from vineyards that have been donated to the Hospices over the centuries.
The event is both serious and fun. I attended the 2011 event, enjoyed terrific hospitality from everyone at Albert Bichot, tasted the 45 different cuvees in one morning and attended he auction. If you love Burgundy it is must-do.
To celebrate this year's auction we present some special prices on the Hospices wines. Special prices on the 2009s are only available until midnight Sunday 19 November 2012.
Tasting notes are by Anthony Hanson MW. The 2009 wines are in stock. The 2011 wines are Pre Arrival and will be here next year - you can save 30% by buying En Primeur.
2009 Volnay-Santenots 1er Cru Cuvee Jehan de Massol
This is the most perfect Volnay-Santenots made by the Hospices de Beaune since the 2005 vintage. The colour is very deep, impressive purple, the aromas being openly fruity, ripe and rich. Magnificent on the palate, this shows superb harmony, sweet fruitiness, succulent texture and astonishing length. The Pinot bunches from which this wine was made are amongst the smallest, with the thickest skins and lowest yields, which can be found. For concentration, harmony and silkiness, this has to be tasted to be believed.
2009 Pommard 1er Cru Cuvee Dames de la Charite
Rich, deep purple, the nose being concentrated, spicy and fresh. This is magnificently structured, with powerful, dense fruitiness which promises superb development. Tannins are dense, fully ripe, and without astringence, the finish being creamily textured and very long. A great wine.
2009 Corton Grand Cru Cuvee Charlotte Dumay
In Stock $135.00
This is purple-red of medium depth, the nose showing powerful raspberry and nutmeg aromas, very appealing. On the palate, it has broad, mouth-coating structure, with luscious fruit. Picked at perfect ripeness, towards the end of the harvest, it fermented slowly, bringing about gentle extractions of flavour and tannins. From a great vintage for Hospices de Beaune Cortons, this cuvée is a classic for mid-term aging. Great value for a Grand Cru!
2011 Volnay-Santenots 1er Cru Cuvee Gauvin
Normal Price $125.00
En Primeur Price $87.50
In colour, this is a beautiful, purple-ruby, with very ripe, fragrant aromas, which are subtly spicy. On the palate, the wine is full and luscious, yet also shows the inimitable finesse of its great, First Growth Volnay terroir. This wine is delicately poised, all aspects being in fine harmony, but with elegance being the outstanding factor. Tannins are firmly present, to ensure harmonious ageing, the finish being impressively long and vivacious.
2011 Corton Grand Cru Cuvee Docteur Peste
Normal Price $159.50
En Primeur $111.65
This is deep garnet-purple, with roasted, densely ripe aromas, already complex. The palate is full-bodied and richly structured - more solid and tannic than Corton Cuvée Charlotte Dumay, as is often the case. The character of Corton Dr. Peste is well delineated, and the wine will prove magnificent, particularly after several years bottle-age. There is neither astringency nor bitterness, but massive complexity on the palate, showing great potential.
