The Domaine Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot 2009 Minervois were amongst the 10 most popular wines at our French Festival Tasting. That's no surprise because at our fantastic 50% discount offer they represent tremendous value for such finely crafted wines.
Background: Having searched the Languedoc high and low for their dream vineyard site, husband and wife team Anne Gros (Domain Anne Gros - Vosne Romanee) and Jean-Paul Tollot (Domain Tollot-Beaut - Chorey Les Beaune) discovered 14 quite beautiful hectares of vines surrounding the tiny hamlet of Cazelles in the Minervois AOC.
Anne says 'we chose Cazelles for its soil diversity of limestone and sandstone on which are planted the four main grape varieties of
the region, Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. The vines were in excellent condition and of varying ages (much of it ancient), planted in an ideal location at the foot of the Montagne Noire at 220 metres altitude (similar to Vosne Romanee).
|Anne Gros et Jean Paul Tollot Minervois (5:49)
They speedily set to work building a state of the art winery at the edge of the village attached to which they have cleverly added 3 attractive 'Gites' The architecture is rounded and curved reflecting its surroundings (hills, tanks, barrels, wine and even the road !) Materials used are minimal yet top quality. Attractive use of hard woods, stainless steel and terracotta tiles. The 2008 vintage was the first for the new enterprise.
Anne and Jean-Paul divide their time between their respective Burgundy domaines and Cazelles, pruning, harvesting and
wine-making. An extra pair of hands in the form of Thibault who helps work the 14 hectares using the 'lutte raisonee' method. Similar to practises in Burgundy, each parcel and variety is vinified separately in order to discover its own character and quality. After a year of ageing in tank and/or barrel the blends were decided on and the wine bottled in superior 'Authentique' Burgundy bottles.
We have the 2009 and 2010 wines in stock. Until midnight Sunday 11 November 2012 we offer these wines at an incredible 50% Off! We urge you to try them, they are terrific wines produced by two great Burgundian winemakers on a mission.
2009 Minervois Les Fontanilles
Normal Price $49.00
Wine Advocate: A shrubby, resinous and pungently herbal overtone suggestive of marjoram and rosemary, along with notes of blond tobacco compliment the scents and flavors of ripe, diverse black fruits in Gros and Tollot's 2009 Fontanilles, which offers a seamlessly ripe, texturally refined, and luscious intensity all the way through to an invigoratingly pungent, saliva-inducingly saline finish. This ought to perform well for at least 5/7 years. 90 Points
2009 Minervois La Ciaude
Normal Price $59.00
Wine Advocate: Suggestions of toasted walnut and hickory along with violets, lilac, and hints of vanilla and resin from toasted oak all compliment the rich dark berries displayed in Gros and Tollot's 2009 Minervois La Ciaude. This is another example of plush texture and seamless ripeness allied to a welcome sense of finishing levity and energy such as can by no means be taken for granted from the vintage in question. I suspect this will merit the better part of a decade's attention, though of course a track record for the wines of this domaine is not yet established. 91 Points
2010 Minervois Les Fontanilles
Normal Price $45.00
Wine Advocate: A pre-assemblage approximation to the Gros-Tollot 2010 Minervois Les Fontanilles displays a gorgeous, bittersweet floral bouquet incorporating iris and gentian, allied to ripe but vividly bright black fruits and a scent of sea breeze. High-toned suggestions of almond extract and distilled herbal elixir add riveting complexity. A saliva-inducing salinity lends the finish here invigoration as well as the compulsion to take the next sip. This wine's combination of sweet ripeness with vivacity and the tendency toward nut extracts and distillate-like esters are characteristic for the striking 2010 material at this address. 91-92+ Points
2010 Minervois La Ciaude
Normal Price $55.00
These south-facing parcels ripen faster than those producing Les Fontanilles but I think the wine evolves rather slower. There is 1.3 ha of 25-year-old Syrah, 0.8 ha of 104(!)-year-old Carignan and 0.5 ha of eight-year-old Grenache - all the result of Gros and Tollot's constant addition to their holdings. Soils are mainly clay limestone.
2010 La 50/50
Normal Price $35.00
Special Price $17.50
The 50/50 refers to ownership of the domaine rather than the assemblage, which is made up of 30-year-old Carignan, 40-year-old Cinsault and 18-year-old Grenache. It cannot be sold as Minervois because it contains too much Carignan - although the permitted percentage yo-yos. From the same terroir as Les Fontanilles.
