Chartron 2017 PA New Reviews Header
White Burgundy at its finest!

Jean-Michel Chartron advised me last week that he has bottled the 2017's and that they will be ready to ship very soon. If you haven't ordered you will need to act quickly as we don't have a lot left to sell.

Those of you who are keen followers will have witnessed the rise of Domaine Chartron to the point now that more often than not it outscores Domaine Leflaive. And Chartron is considerably more affordable, not to mention easier to buy.

Interestingly 2017 marks the centenary of the acquisition of the domaine's three monopoles.

Today we present the remaining 2017's. Of special note are the less famous appellations. The reviews for these wines have been universally outstanding. If you are looking for some wonderful drinking White Burgundy at appealing prices look no further.

All wines are offered at a 15% Pre Arrival Discount.

Rully Montmorin 2017
Landed Price $64.50
Pre Arrival Price $54.50
22 bottles left

Chartron Rully label
Wine Advocate, Neal Martin:The 2017 Rully Montmorin comes from 3.4-hectares of vine, three-quarters aged in pièces of which 10% are new. It has an attractive bouquet with orange blossom, touches of vanilla pod and white chocolate, very well defined and focused. The palate is well balanced with a taut, quite tensile entry. This is quite linear at first, but precise and detailed with a touch of spice on the finish. Very fine, but it needs 18 to 24 months in bottle. 2020-2028. 90 Points

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report":
A deeper register but at the same time more floral. Hmm, melting, wide, considered but fresh - my favourite I think - but three very different styles. Real elegance here.
Savigny-les-Beaune Les Pimentiers 2017
Landed Price $92.95
Pre Arrival Price $78.95
45 bottles left

chartron savigny pimentiers label Wine Advocate, Neal Martin: The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune les Pimentiers, a village cru consisting of five barrels this year, offers light apple blossom and chalky aromas that feel complex and engaging. You want to get to know this wine better. The palate is taut and fresh with a superb line of acidity, a little waxy in texture with pear and peach skin notes towards the finish, a hint of ginger on the aftertaste. Excellent. 2020-2032. 90-92 Points

John Gilman, A View from the Cellar:
I tasted some really superb examples of 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune blanc during my three weeks in Burgundy in November and Jean-Michel Chartron's version was certainly one of the top. The bouquet offers up a bright and zesty mix of apple, pear, chalky soil tones, lime peel a touch of beeswax and a gentle base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied,  long and shows off excellent backend mineral drive, with fine focus and cut and a long, vibrant and complex finish. This is another superb bargain in the Chartron lineup of 2017s. 2018-2035. 90+ Points

Pernand Vergelesses Les Belles Filles 2017
Landed Price $102.50
Pre Arrival Price $86.95
36 bottles left

Chartron Pernand Filles labelWine Advocate, Neal Martin: The 2017 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Belles Filles, which comes from a lieu-dit shared with Jean-Claude Ramonet, has a very feisty, almost minty bouquet that needs to calm down by the time of bottling. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with a taut line of acidity, quite boisterous and vivacious but utterly charming with a hint of liquorice bubbling up on the finish. Just fun in a bottle. 2020-2030. 89-91 Points

John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: The Pernand-Vergelesses blanc was one of the wines not produced in 2016 chez Chartron and I was happy to see it back in its customary place in this vintage. The wine is very pretty and stylish on the nose, wafting from the glass in a mix of apple, lemon, chalky soil tones, white flowers and a top note of citrus zest. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied and has a nice touch of stylistic reserve to it today, with a good core, fine soil signature and lovely focus and grip on the long finish. This is not quite as complex out of the blocks as the Savigny blanc, but that may come with a bit of bottle age. 2019-2035. 89+ Points

St Aubin 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2017
Landed Price $121.95
Pre Arrival Price $103.95
47 bottles left

Chartron St-Aubin Perrieres label Wine Advocate, Neal Martin: The 2017 Saint-Aubin Les Perrières 1er Cru matures in 25% new oak, has a wonderful, expressive bouquet with scents of green apple, linden, peppermint and sage, very complex and vibrant. The palate is very well balanced and lively, well-judged acidity that cuts through what is a spicy Saint-Aubin with a tang of lemongrass that pops up on the finish. Almost delicious enough to drink now! 2021-2034.
90-92 Points

John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: In the 2016 vintage, the Perrières vineyard was the far more heavily-damaged parcels in St. Aubin from Jean-Michel, and I was very happy to see the wine showing so beautifully this year. The nose is pure and complex, jumping from the glass in a mix of apple, pear, pastry cream, lovely limestone minerality, a touch of fresh almond, vanillin oak and a top note of spring flowers. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, complex and very refined, with a fine core, lovely balance and grip and a long, focused and classy finish. 2018-2045+.

St Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien 2017
Landed Price $121.95
Pre Arrival Price $103.95
23 bottles left

Chartron Dent NV label Wine Advocate, Neal Martin: The 2017 Saint-Aubin les Murgers des Dents de Chien 1er Cru shows a bit of reduction tasting it directly from vat, although it gradually dissipates to reveal cheeky hints of mint chocolate that combine seamlessly with the malic aromas. The palate is very well balanced with quite a phenolic opening. There is commendable depth here, quite grippy for a white Burgundy with lemongrass lining the finish. Excellent. 2020-2032.
90-92 Points

John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: The 2017 Murgers des Dents de Chien from Domaine Chartron is outstanding and was really singing at the time of my November visit. The bouquet delivers lovely purity and complexity in its blend of pear, white peach, crème patissière, a complex base of chalky soil tones, bee pollen, almond and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and a touch more reserved in personality than the Perrières, with a superb core of fruit, fine soil inflection and a long, zesty and very promising finish. Excellent juice. 2021-2045+.

Puligny-Montrachet 2017
Landed Price $169.95
Pre Arrival Price $145.95

Chartron Puligny Villages Label John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: The 2017 Puligny villages was a bit more reticent at the time of my visit, but with a bit of coaxing delivers scents of apple, pear, chalky soil tones, spring flowers, vanillin oak and a hint of the crème patissière to come with a bit of bottle age. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite a bit more open than the nose suggests, with plenty of depth and charm, good soil signature, bright acids and lovely length and grip on the well-balanced finish. A fine example. 2021-2045.
91 Points

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": Normally three parcels with a hint of 1er from the Meursault side. Mainly Sous la Velle, Levrons and Rue Rousseau, plus some must from colleagues as I own only own a dozen ouvrees. This year it's actually 4 parcels.Slowly opening, rather discrete still this nose. Hmm, mineral, layered, still needing more elevage but this delivers ever more complexity - just widening and widening. The finish is top-level for a villages - hyper impressive - bravo!

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Pucelle Monopole 2017

Chartron Pucelles Label NV
John Gilman, A View from the Cellar:
2017 is the hundredth vintage of Clos de la Pucelle for the Chartron family and Jean-Michel has produced a special cuvée to commemorate this historical vintage. The wine is absolutely stellar on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet offering up a supremely refined blend of white peach, apple, chalky soil tones, a nice touch of citrus zest, vanillin oak and a beautiful topnote of lemon blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, complex and supremely elegant in profile, with a fine core, excellent transparency, bright, zesty acids and great cut and grip on the very long and classy finish. A great bottle in the making. 2025-2065+.
94 Points

Steen Ohman Winehog.org: The second centenaire cuvée is the Clos de la Pucelle a Clos located in the northern end of Pucelle - also around 1 ha, with the oldest part planted in 1953/54. This is also a very elegant cuvée - tremendous purity and with a lovely floral element - Classic Pucelles .. long, intense and filigree - what a lovely wine - matching the Caillerets. 93-95 Points

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2017
Landed Price $494.50
Pre Arrival Price $420.50
17 bottles left

Chartron Corton Label Steen Ohman Winehog.org: The Corton Charlie is intense, long and quite tightly knit. The nose offer quite exotic white orchard fruits - cool yet with a nice genrosity. Lovely chalky minerality - fine balancing acidity - quite filigree and vivid. An impressive Charlie in the making.
 93-94 Points
John Gilman "View from the Cellar":
I like Jean-Michel Chartron's 2017 Corton-Charlemagne quite well this year, but it cannot quite keep pace with the stunning quality of the previous two premier crus. The bouquet is pure and has a nice touch of reserve to it in 2017,offering up scents of apple, pear, a touch ofpassion fruit, chalky minerality, fresh almond, orange zest and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and complex, with good focus and cut, racy acids and a long, nascently complex and promising finish. This is going to be very, very good. 2022-2055+. 93 Points

Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2017
Landed Price $765.00
Pre Arrival Price $650.00
Only 2 bottles left

Chartron Batard Label
Wine Advocate - Neal Martin:
The 2017 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a very backward and taciturn bouquet, not unlike Domaine Pierre Morey's that I tasted a couple of hours earlier. The palate is well balanced, quite sapid with orange rind and dried honey notes, lots of matière (perhaps more than the Corton-Charlemagne) with fine precision on the finish. Give it a couple of years in bottle. 2022-2038. 92-94 Points

Steen Ohman Winehog.org: The Batard-Montrachet is from the middle lower part of the vineyard - just on the border between Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet - but as the estate located in Puligny. The nose is airy and vivid - notes of apple, peach and almonds. Fine hint of citrus infused minerality .. lovely depth and complexity - although not rivalling the magnificent Chevalier-Montrachet. An intense yet refined Batard in my view -the 2017s are truly delightful when harvested in time.
 94-95 Points

Montrachet Grand Cru 2017
Landed Price $2409.00
Pre Arrival Price $2047.50
Only 1 bottle left
Chartron Montrachet Large John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The 2017 Montrachet from Monsieur Chartron is also quite ripe and shows a touch of
exotica in its aromatic blend of fresh pineapple, pear, apple, chalky soil tones, orange blossoms and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, ripe and complex, with a plump
core, very good acidity and grip, fine focus and a long, vibrant and classy finish. This is very,
very good juice in the making. 2023-2065. 94 Points

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report": From the Puligny side.
A suggestion of sulfur. Modest nose. Mineral, weighted, agrume but not a reductive style - a fresh bowl of fruit in front of you. Labile, mobile, textured, but perfect acidity, lingering. Great wine, different, but not 'better'...
