Vosne-Romanee, love it!
We know not everyone could make it to our Vosne-Romanee lunch at Ryne yesterday. It was a delightful lunch and the old adage that there are "no bad wines from Vosne-Romanee" was certainly proven correct. It was very educational to taste and compare vineyards, makers and vintages - this is the only way you learn about the intricacies of the world's greatest (but most complex) wine region.
Several of the wines that were only available in small quantities sold out but we still have stocks of 9 of the wines tasted. This morning we present those wines at the special lunch prices for everyone to enjoy.

Chevillon-Chezeaux Vosne Label
Darren Harris: 100% from the lieu-dit of La Croix Blanche. Deep red colour. Nose of spicy red fruits and flowers, open and aromatic. Unmistakably Vosne-Romanee. The palate is medium bodied with pristine, fleshy, juicy fruit typical of 2016. Just the right level of extract to produce a fine, balanced Vosne. Finishes with more spice and minerals and fine grained tannins. A delight at this level.

Domaine Jean Chauvenet Vosne-Romanee 2016

Chauvenet Vosne label
(from Ravioles). A discreet touch of wood can be found on the spicy mix of red currant and plum scents. There is fine volume to the round, rich and velvety middle weight flavors that possess sneaky good length and a lovely sense of harmony. This should be a quality Vosne villages in time. 2022+. 88-91 Points

Domaine Michel Noellat Vosne-Romanee 2015
Normally $156.95
Special $109.85
19 bottles available
Noellat Vosne label
Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Village comes from les Communes and a small parcel in Aux Ormes. A little deeper in color than the Nuits Saint-Georges. The fruit here is darker than the other crus, perhaps demonstrating a little more skin maceration, though it maintains satisfying delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit tinged with sea salt. Nicely balanced, if just a little heavy on the finish, this "hearty" Vosne-Romanée is best consumed over the next 5-6 years. 85-87 Points

Domaine Christian Clerget Vosne-Romanee Les Violettes 2016
Normally $227.95
Special $193.75
17 bottles available

Clerget Violettes 2
Burghound: (from .50 ha parcel planted in 1946; Les Violettes abuts Clos de Vougeot). This is also quite elegant and spicier with its blend of both red and blue pinot fruit, violet, sandalwood and an interesting hint of hoisin. The round, delicious, sappy and caressing medium-bodied flavors possess fine concentration before culminating in a firm but not austere finale. A high quality Vosne villages. 2023+. 89-91 Points

Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair Vosne-Romanee Les Damodes 2015
Normally $150.50
Special $127.95
8 bottles available
fougeray beauclair vosne label
Darren Harris: A 0.25 hectare parcel of 55 year old vines adjoining Les Malconsorts on the Nuits-St-Georges border. Most producers use the spelling "Damaudes", however, Fougerey de Beauclair choose the Nuits spelling "Damodes". A cool nose of black-red fruits - raspberry, blackberry with spice, violets and little smoke. Very aromatic. Round and concentrated on the mid palate with many layers. Autosuggestion or not, there is a mini-Malconsorts thing happening here. The wine finishes with minerals and serious, defined tannins. A real winner.
Domaine Philippe Cheron Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux 2015
Normally $155.50
Special $131.95
17 bottles available
Cheron Vosne Label
Darren Harris: Les Barreaux, made famous in recent years by Domaine Anne Gros, is wonderfully sited lying above Richebourg and Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux and alongside Petit Monts and Beaux Monts. Like its big brothers it produces a deeply coloured wine and those with an interest in wines of yesteryear will be delighted to know that Les Barreaux played a big part in the legendary Henri Jayer's Village Vosne-Romanee. Dark in colour. Aromatic nose with blacker fruits than the two Chambolles. Spices and minerals. Concentrated with plenty of extract and an underlying coolness. Quite muscular - more Richebourg than Romanee-St-Vivant in style. This is a serious lieu-dit which will age magnificently. And it is extremely well priced.
Domaine Bertagna Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2016
Normally $239.95
Special $203.95

Bertagna Beaux Monts Label
Darren Harris:
From a 0.92 hectare holding. Deep colour. Spicy Vosne nose with cherries, violets and considerable five spice. Complex and multi-layerd with floral elements alongside the spice. Sleek and concentrated in the mouth with excellent presence. Finishes extremely long with the discreet but present tannins buried beneath the fruit. Very good indeed.

Bertagna Beaux Monts Label
Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss:
From one of the grandest premiers crus, this wine is dense and rich. With great fruit tones and finely integrated wood, it is complex, beautifully balanced and shows great intensity. The juicy red fruits are shot through by firm tannins that will soften as it matures. Drink from 2025.

Domaine Michel Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2015

Noellat Beaumonts Label Wine Advocate - Neal Martin
The 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts has a refined bouquet with plenty of what we call "Pinoté" - quite Lamarche-like in style. There is a touch of reduction though that will ebb away with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit, a keen line of acidity and better precision and nervosité than the Les Suchots. There is drive and focus to this premier cru, as well as excellent length. This is well worth investigating. 92-94 Points

Bertagna Murgers label
Domaine Bertagna Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 2015
15 bottles available

Les Murgers is at the Vosne-Romanee end of Nuits-St-Georges. it is highly regarded due to the exceptional style of the wine combining the best of Nuits-St-Georges and Vosne -Romanee.
Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss:
This young, richly structured wine comes from a vineyard to the north of the town of Nuits Saint-Georges. It is powered by spice and toast from wood aging that are balanced by the ripe red-plum fruits and acidity. The combination is going to produced an impressive, foursquare wine as it ages. Drink from 2024. 93 Points
Bourgogne Aujourd'Hui:
Here is a wine which has everything expected of a very big Pinot Noir, elegance, delicious, racy, full of personality and balance. The wine is tailored for fans of this style. 18/20

Jomain Perrieres label
Domaine Jomain Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
Bill Nanson on Domaine Jomain: The wine I would search out, however, is Les Perrieres - a wine of outstanding intensity, where the terroir doesn't have a particularly obvious mark, and yet it combines finesse and minerality.

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report":
Less attack, more refinement to this faintly spiced and very attractive nose. More depth, more minerality, more intensity - this starts a little less generous than the villages wine, but there is more of everything here. Not an overt acidity, but ingraining flavour and with plenty of balance. Very good - to wait for again. Super length.

Darren Harris:
Puligny-Montrachet provides a variety of terroirs and wine styles. The Grand Crus and the Premier Crus alongside are rich and powerful. But travel a little further to the north of the commune and you will find vineyards that produce wines that are more delicate and mineral. One of these is Les Perrieres, named after the quarries. Perrieres is a wine of finesse. It is not a blockbuster. It is the dancer of Puligny-Montrachet. Light on its feet yet still absolutely absorbing.
The 2016 Perrieres from Jomain is long, fine and very fresh. Loaded with minerals. It is acid and racy with a gorgeous intensity and persistence. My type of wine. A terrific example of what makes Puligny-Montrachet the go-to commune for White Burgundy.

Castagnier Chambolle label new

Domaine Jerome Castagnier Chambolle-Musigny 2015

Wine Spectator:
Vibrant, this red exudes violet, black cherry, blackberry and earth flavors. The firm backbone lends plenty of support, leaving room for a beam of pure cherry on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2021 through 2036. 92 Points

Grivot Vougeot label

Domaine Jean Grivot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 1998
21 Years Young!

Burghound: As young Clos de Vougeot often is, this wine is a good deal less generous now than the '98 Echézeaux and is borderline austere yet there is plenty of solid material beneath the sober veneer. There is good sappy pinot extract with big, heavily soil inflected flavors and good length. A big wine needing 10 to 12 years to resolve its structure but it should amply reward the patient. 92 Points
