1er Cru Clos des Mouches - Beaune's "Grand Cru"

Berthelemot Mouches Grand CRu header
An age-worthy white at a not to be missed price
The Beaune vineyard Clos des Mouches is rather unusual in a number of ways.
It is one of the few sites in Burgundy that produces Red and White wine of quality.
The name translates as "honey bees" and has become famous over the decades due to the success of Drouhin's wines from this prime climat.
It is quite a large vineyard (25.18 hectares) and despite being located on the Pommard border it produces wines of unusual finesse. This is due to the slope of the land and the presence of more sand than across the border which ensures excellent drainage.
Domaine Berthelemot produce both a red and white from Clos des Mouches. Today we feature the white.
Clos des Mouches Blanc is known for its ability to age. It is Beaune's most famous white vineyard and some owners certainly consider it their "Grand Cru".
To end the week we have a special offer on the last of the 2015 Clos des Mouches. Try it, I think you will be impressed!

Berthelemot Mouches Label
Berthelemot have two parcels inside Clos des Mouches. They are both over 50 years of age but the soil varies somewhat with the limestone in the larger parcel providing elegance and finesse to the white.

Darren Harris:
Grapefruit, nuts, slate. The palate shows the same characters with some gun flint and a hint of sulphides adding complexity. Textured, slinky and lifted with high acidity and no excess fat. Quite piercing with a lime and salt character on the finish.

Morot Teurons Label
Domaine Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Teurons 2014
Teurons is certainly a red grape vineyard.

Morot own 1 hectare located mid slope where there is a lot of limestone in the soil.

This is notably more deeply pitched than the other wines in the range with its very somber and cool notes of plum, dark berries, earth, forest floor and humus. There is good richness to the dense, intense and sleek middle weight plus flavors that despite the richness retain a fine sense of delineation before terminating in a dusty, muscular, palate coating and overtly austere finish. This is definitely going to require extended time in bottle before it becomes more civilized as the youthful austerity is likely to persist for several years. Recommended provided this is cellared for a minimum of 5 years first. (Drink starting 2024). 92 Points
