A Selection of Domaine Robert Chevillon Back Vintages

Chevillon Robert Back Vintages header
10 highly rated Nuits-St-Georges from the commune's most iconic maker
The stunning array of premier cru and old-vine vineyards held by the two Chevillon brothers would make any Pinot Noir grower jealous. Their innate ability to carefully tend the vines and master the difficult Burgundian conditions provides ripe, healthy clusters of grapes every vintage. Taste through the barrels of Chevillon post-harvest and it doesn't matter what happened the year before, almost as if by miracle, the wines show class and character and each terroir has its own personality.

Brothers Bertrand and Denis Chevillon are the fifth generation managers of this property in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Their father Robert, after whom the domaine is named, is still involved. It is fair to say that Domaine Robert Chevillon is the most famous address in Nuits-St-Georges and the critics agree.
The consistency between reviewers and scores over different vintages is astounding. There is not a bad wine here - just variations on a theme.

Today we present a lovely run of Nuits-St-George from one of our clients who has accumulated quite a selection. The wines are never easy to buy so the quantities available vary. Be quick!

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The 2013 Chevillon Perrières is quite black fruity in personality this year and recalls very strongly the beautiful 1993 at this address when that wine was young. The bouquet is pure, elegant and very intense, delivering a complex mix of black cherries, sweet dark berries, pigeon, beautiful minerality, raw cocoa, smoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and as reserved as it customarily is out of the blocks, with a rock solid core of sappy black fruit, fine-grained tannins, excellent focus and grip and a very, very long, soil-driven finish that turns quite stony on the backend. An outstanding vintage for this excellent wine. (Drink between 2022-2060). 93+ Points

John Gilman "View from the Cellar":
One of the reasons I never got my act together and bought more Roncières back in the day is I always bought a lot of les Cailles- not a bad thing- and the 2013 is definitely a wine I want in my cellar! This is an utterly beautiful wine, with a fine sense of reserve today that augurs extremely well for its evolution in bottle. The stunning bouquet offers up scents of black cherries, red plums, bitter chocolate, a gorgeously complex base of soil, woodsmoke, gamebirds and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very, very soil-driven, with a rock solid core of sappy fruit, tangy acids, laser-like focus and great length and grip on the ripely tannic finish. This is another 2013 that harkens back very strongly to the 1993 version! (Drink between 2023-2060).

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Bousselots 2014
Normal Price $179.95
Pre Arrival Price $152.95
10 bottles available
Chevillon Bousselots label
Wine Advocate - Neal MartinThe 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Bousselots comes from vines on more gravelly, silty soils. As such, it displays more volume and fruité on the nose compared to the 2014 Les Chaignots. This comes out and greets you with open arms with lovely, sumptuous blackberry and crushed strawberry aromas. The palate is very precise with fine tannin, black rather than red fruit with blood orange surfacing towards the precise finish, which does not have enormous persistence -- but it has so much freshness and elegance. This is just superb. 92-94 Points

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": In very transparent years like 2014, the vineyard of Perrières supplies some of the most beautiful red fruit tones to be found anywhere in Nuits St. Georges, and this is most certainly the case with the outstanding version from Domaine Chevillon this year! The stunningly complex young nose soars from the glass in a blaze of cherries, blood orange, pomegranate, a great base of stony soil tones, cocoa, fresh herbs, vanillin oak and a topnote of woodsmoke. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure on the attack and very vibrant, with a sappy core, great transparency and a very, very long, fine-grained and tangy finish. I love this vintage of Perrières!
(Drink between 2022-2055). 93+ Points

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The The 2014 les Cailles from the Chevillon family is equally stunning. The bouquet is deep, pure and remarkably vibrant, jumping from the glass in a blaze of cherries, pomegranate, nutskin, woodsmoke, gamebird, stunning minerality and a deft framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with great elegance and depth, laser-like focus and a very long, tangy and ripely tannic finish. An absolutely superb and classic example of les Cailles.

Chevillon Robert Vaucrains label
John Gilman "View from the Cellar":
The 2014 Domaine Chevillon Vaucrains is another stunning wine in the making, as I love the synthesis of the elegance of the vintage with the depth and power inherent in this great vineyard. The stunning nose soars from the glass in a sappy blend of cherries, pomegranate, nutskin, again, very stony minerality, gamebird, a touch of mustard seed and a judicious framing of cedary wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and shows almost bottomless depth of sappy fruit, with stunning transparency, ripe tannins and a very, very long, perfectly balanced and soil-driven finish. Sheer greatness in the making! (Drink between 2025-2075). 95 Points

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
Normal Price $199.95
Pre Arrival Price $169.95
6 bottles available
Chevillon Robert Perrieres label
Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrières has a more floral and mineral-driven bouquet, a bit of light after the broodier Roncier. The palate is medium-bodied with a confit-like entry, quite intense with concentrated with veins of fresh fig discretely interwoven into the red berry fruit. There is sense of compactness here and it is only in the last third that it stretches its arms. This is a lovely Les Perrières from Chevillon. 92-94 Points
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 2016
Normal Price $199.95
Pre Arrival Price $169.95
6 bottles available
Chevillon Robert Pruliers label
John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The inherent elegance of the 2016 vintage is very much in evidence in this stunning young Pruliers. This is a terroir that can often take a decade or two in bottle for the elegance here to arrive, but the 2016 version from Domaine Chevillon already shows extraordinary refinement. The bouquet delivers a superb constellation of sappy black plums and black cherries, gamebird, dark chocolate, violets, dark soil tones and vanillin oak. This will get very black truffley as it ages. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with a rock solid core, excellent acids and focus, ripe tannins and a very long, complex and soil-driven finish. A great vintage of Pruliers. (Drink between 2026-2070). 94+ Points

Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Roncieres 2016
Normal Price $199.95
Pre Arrival Price $169.95
6 bottles available

Chevillon Robert Roncieres label
John Gilman "View from the Cellar":
The 2016 Roncières from Domaine Chevillon is every bit as brilliant as the Chaignots this year, but it is a tad more reserved in personality and will need a bit more time in the cellar to blossom fully. The bouquet jumps from the glass in a stellar blend of red and black raspberries, black cherries, bitter chocolate, a fine base of soil, vanillin oak and an exotic topnote of eucalyptus. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with great focus and grip, ripe, seamless tannins and a very long, very, very promising finish. Great juice. (Drink between 2025-2065). 93 Points

Vinous: Stephen Tanzer:
(the yield here was barely ten hectoliters per hectare): Bright, dark red. Sexy aromas of blueberry, cranberry, raspberry, white pepper and smoke are complemented by a deep mineral pungency. An essence of sappy Pinot on the palate, with its highly concentrated black fruit and mineral flavors accented by flowers and spices. This glistening, fine-grained wine saturates the entire mouth without leaving any impression of weight. Perhaps most impressive today on the rising stony finish, which leaves behind a subtle sweetness and a complicating licorice note. This has near-grand cru class. 93-95 Points
