Grand Cru quality at a Premier Cru Price...
We all know politics and wine are not a good mix.
Gevrey-Chambertin Les Combottes is sandwiched between the Grand Crus Latricerties-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche on the same line as Chambertin.

So why isn't it a Grand Cru?
There are two schools of thought. The first is that Combottes lies in the faintest of hollows which means it drains less well than the vineyards alongside. The break in the hill above allows a cool breeze to flow over the vines which means that ripening is a little later (certainly not a bad thing these days). However, Charmes-Chambertin is across the road and much of the land here is, in a number of ways, quite marginal.
The other possible reason was that at the time of classification much of Combottes belonged to growers in Morey-St-Denis (as it still does). Those in Gevrey saw little value in pushing for Combottes to be a Grand Cru (nine is enough!) and the makers in Morey were most likely not eager to spend the money.
So today, for whatever reason, Combottes remains a Premier Cru. But it is a Premier Cru of serious quality. The style of wine produced is somewhere between the vineyards alongside. It has the power and depth of Clos de la Roche and the texture and weight of Latricieres-Chambertin. For those in the know, happy to drink what is in the bottle, not what is on the label, it is a highly respected vineyard.
The 2015 is full of minerals and earth, with a wonderful mid palate weight and complexity. It finishes long and polished.
I was surprised to see that we have 28 bottles in the warehouse so for this week we offer the wine at what was our original Special Pre Arrival Offer. You can save $69.55 a bottle on this "almost Grand Cru" wine.

A Premier Cru that's "a bit more than a Premier Cru," according to Benoit Stehly, this is tucked between two Grands Crus yet is something of a below-the-radar wine. Smoky and intense, with lovely precision and focus supported by textured tannins and lingering acidity. 2022-30.

Vinous, Stephen Tanzer:
(January 2017) Healthy medium red. Captivating perfume of cranberry, raspberry, red cherry, clove, nutmeg and white pepper. Juicy and penetrating but utterly seamless too, conveying terrific intensity without any impression of weight. Offers a lovely combination of mineral cut and supple balancing flesh and refinement. This beauty is a splendid example of its vineyard and offers outstanding potential. 91-93 Points
Vinous, Stephen Tanzer:
(January 2018) Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Deeply pitched scents of black cherry and menthol; showing less early perfume than the Clos des Ormes. Dark fruit flavors are sweet and concentrated, with ripe acidity giving energy and definition to the middle palate. A rather powerful, structured wine but with tannins that show the finesse of the year's better examples. The rising finish features aromatic dark fruits and lingering sweetness. This may well shut down in bottle but it's sexy right now. 92 Points
