Coudray-Bizot PA Header
A grand, traditional Domaine with some wonderful vineyards including the rare Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru La Croix Rameau

Domaine Coudray-Bizot is a family run domaine with some prime vineyards. The domaine is located in the historic Chateau David de Beaufort within Beaune's mediaeval walls.

Their vineyards include Echezeaux En Orveaux, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers and Champeaux, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes and the rare and intriguing Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru La Croix Rameaux. They are one of just three owners of Vosne-Romanee's smallest Premier Cru.

The domaine also has a alternative policy when it comes to releasing their wines. Where most domaines like to ship their wines as soon as humanly possible, Coudray-Bizot prefer to hold their wines back to enable them develop complexity and interest. Their current vintage is 2012 which has enjoyed 4+ years in bottle.

During my last trip to Burgundy I met with the owners and tasted at Domaine Coudray-Bizot. Jean-Jacques Coudray-Bizot produces wines of finesse and intensity. They describe the process as such "A wine-growing and wine production philosophy that respects traditions while combining modern precision and respect for nature."

We have featured the rare and fascinating La Croix Rameau in previous emails. Click here to read the email. Today we also offer the rest of the wines from the domaine.

To introduce the wines of Domaine Coudray-Bizot, and especially La Croix Rameau, we offer the wines at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount.

Darren HarrisBreezy nose of spicy red-black berries and flowers. Spicy bitter cherry, a hint of citrus and some minerals. More flowers - very perfumed. Enticing, yet quite delicate, but also with intensity. The tannins are present yet extremely fine and long. The balance is excellent. La Croix Rameau is all about elegance. A classic Vosne-Romanee.

Coudray-Bizot Echezeaux label
Darren Harris:
From a 0.35 hectare parcel of very old vines in the extreme north east corner the climat of En Orveaux - alongside the Clos de Vougeot. Red and not particularly deeply coloured (Chambolle-like). A very elegant nose combining aromatic fruit with spice, mineral and a little animale. This wine says style more than stuffing. It is persistent, fine, almost feminine, yet still retaining its terroir and intensity. The old vines add texture to what is a gorgeous style of Burgundy that has its roots in the wines of yesteryear. Delightful!

Gilbert & Gaillard:
Light Red. Very elegant, mature nose showing ultra ripe red fruit notes, a subtle smoky tone and mineral touch. Excellent grip on the palate. A robust wine, still fairly youthful with lots of fullness and persistent fruitiness. 93 Points

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2012
Landed Price $235.00
Special Pre Arrival Price $176.50 (Less 25%)

Coudray-Bizot Cazetiers label Darren Harris: Two-thirds 60 years of age, 1/3 replanted in 1999. The domaine's vines are located on the border of Clos St-Jacques. Medium red. Aromatic nose of red-black fruits with a mineral tang and a touch of iron filings. Very racy, a fine line of acid running through the mineral palate. The fruit is ripe and gently sweet and fills the mouth. Finish is tight with fine tannins, precision and excellent length.

Gilbert & Gaillard:
Light red. Racy nose with ripe red berry fruits and a subtle touch of cacao. The palate is soft yet retains lovely volume and aromas brimming with freshness. The same candies, almost toasted tone recurs on the finish. Lovely. 91 Points

Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champeaux 2012
Landed Price $188.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $141.00 (Less 25%)

Coudray-Bizot Champeaux label Gilbert & Gaillard:
Light red. Delightful nose recalling ripe cherry. The palate is fairly light, soft and very tangy. Mature and harmonious with heady fruit on the finish. Drink now. 90 Points

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 2013
Landed Price $268.50
Special Pre Arrival Price $199.95 (Less 25%)
Coudray-Bizot Combettes label Three quarters of the vines are extremely old (80+ years), the balance replanted in the 1990's.

Les Combettes is today classified as Premier Cru. However, the official classification committee designated it as 'Première Cuvée' in 1860; in this classification system it is at the same level as Chevalier Montrachet and the best parts of Batard Montrachet, which are now classified as Grand Cru.
Jancis Robinson: Smoky reductive struck match nose. Some mealiness on the front palate with a hint of beeswax. Bit looser than the most precise white burgundies. Dry savoury finish. 16/20

Gilbert & Gaillard:
Beautiful clear, brilliant yellow-gold. Intense nose marrying ripe white fruits, fresh mushroom tones and toast touches. The attack is rich on the palate and show more of the same aromas. A tell-tale Burgundy-style Chardonnay as its peak. 90 Points
