No ordinary Coteaux Bourguignons!
 
In 2011 the regional appellation Coteaux Bourguignons was created. It translates as "Burgundy Hills" and includes the areas in and around Burgundy not entitled to a more lofty appellation. But like all things in Burgundy not everything is created equal. Coteaux Bourguignons can come from far afield but Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux's (who are located in Nuits-St-Georges) comes from Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-St-Georges!
 
The vineyards used for this wine are Champs d'Argent in Vosne-Romanee and Croix Blanche and Petit Chaliot in Nuits-St-Georges. Not too shabby!

Darren Harris: From barrel: Purple-red. Lifted, spicy nose with floral aromatics that remind you that the grapes for this wine are from Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-St-Georges. Juicy fruit and with spicy notes and good structure. A great everyday wine and a super successor to the 2015.
From bottle, 16 January 2019: Vibrant garnet. A lifted nose of raspberry, five spice and crushed stone with a complexing back note of flowers and woody earth. The palate exhibits excellent depth with more spicy red fruits and the juiciness of 2016 backed by refreshing acidity. It is very Vosne-like in shape. There is some refined tannin on the finish which only adds to the drinking pleasure.

Bouley Passetoutgrains
Bourgogne Passetoutgrains is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) for wine from the region of Burgundy in France. Unlike other Burgundy wines, which are produced from a single grape variety, Bourgogne Passetoutgrains is essentially a cuvée of Pinot Noir and Gamay. These days the name has been somewhat replaced by Coteaux Bourguignons.
Domaine Pierrick Bouley choose to make a Passetoutgrains and when checking a stock report I discovered we have 3 cases of the 2016 that have never found their way into the system or onto our website. 
The domaine is located in Volnay and the grapes are sourced from local vineyard

Winehog.org: The Passetoutgrain 2016 offer very good value in my view - always enjoy a good passetoutgrain. The nose shows fine and pure fruit - 70% of pinot - red and dark forest berries. On the palate fruity with a nice fresh acidity - refreshing with a nice energy - drinking well.

Chablis - the perfect summer wine!

James Suckling: Some neat chalky elements to the nose with an array of melon, peaches and citrus notes. It delivers a supple and even palate. Fresh finish and good length.
 
Wine Enthusiast: This warm, ripe Chablis has a hint of tangy texture along with intense white-fruit acidity. It is a delicious wine, still young, and will be better from 2018.
 
Burghound: A fresh and relatively airy nose is comprised by notes of ripe apple, pear and just enough Chablis typicity to distinguish this from being say from the Côte d'Or. There is excellent richness to the very round, supple and succulent flavors that possess solid mid-palate density before terminating in a refreshing if slightly warm finish.

Chevillon-Chezeaux Vosne Label
Chevillon-Chezeaux's Vosne-Romanee comes entirely from the lieu-dit of La Croix Blanche. It could be labelled as such but Philippe prefers to keep it simple and just call the wine Vosne-Romanee. He's like that. It is always an elegant, stylish wine. Incredible value for Vosne-Romanee.

Darren Harris: 100% from the lieu-dit of La Croix Blanche. Deep red colour. Nose of spicy red fruits and flowers, open and aromatic. Unmistakably Vosne-Romanee. The palate is medium bodied with pristine, fleshy, juicy fruit typical of 2016. Just the right level of extract to produce a fine, balanced Vosne. Finishes with more spice and minerals and fine grained tannins. A delight at this level.

Berthelemot Greves NV Label Greves, located in the north, is considered one of, if not the, best vineyard in the commune producing the most structured and longest-lived wines of Beaune. The vineyard is quite steeply sloped with a reddish soil with more stone towards the top. Domaine Berthelemot own 0.67 hectares.
 
Jasper Morris MW says "This is absolutely the heartland of Beaune, the most structured and longest-lived wines of the appellation. The core of the vineyard is on a steep slope with a reddish soil infused with iron oxide."

A consistently delicious wine from a premium site planted 40 years ago. The 2016 vintage is quite elegant with lovely fruit weight and a certain juiciness balancing the inherent power of Greves. A gorgeous Burgundy.

Magnien Champeaux Label Guide Hachette: A menthol-like character with hints of cherry and redcurrant creates an engaging and complex nose, while a full-bodied, silky and very fine texture gives a feeling of fullness in the mouth. An already pleasant wine, which will be at its peak in a few years.

Bouley Volnay 2016 label It shouldn't happen but occasionally a wine arrives from France and we forget it is here. That happened with the Volnay 2016 from Domaine Pierrick Bouley. In 2016, the loss of crop due to the hail saw the quantity of this wine reduced to crazy low levels. The Volnay produced just 10hl/ha, way below the volume allowed for Grand Crus. Production was a fraction of usual and our allocation was reduced accordingly.

 

The goods new is that with such low cropping levels the quality and intensity of the resulting wine is superior to normal.A significant proportion of the fruit in Bouley's Volnay comes from the vineyard of Le Pluchots which lies below the Premier Crus Carelles and Les Ronceret. The soil here contains a little more clay and produces a wine with depth and restrained power. Bouley fans may remember the domaine did a separate bottling in 2015 when they had more volume.

 

The Fine Wine Review: 

10 hl/ha. This wine had received no SO2 at the time I tasted it. This wine is dense and dark-fruited, intense, chewy, and long. It is more powerful than the foregoing wines. 89-92 Points

 

Vinous Media, Neal Martin: 

The 2016 Volnay has a light and airy bouquet, pure and quite elegant in style. The palate is defined by edgy black fruit laced with tea and bay leaves, a pinch of white pepper towards the finish. Cropped at just 10hl/ha, there is concentration and depth to this fine Volnay from Pierrick Bouley. 88 Points

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon? 12 Different Vosne-Romanee and a 4-course menu
 
We all love Vosne-Romanee - it's Burgundy's top red wine commune. To kick start 2019 we have a terrific Sunday lunch planned at Ryne featuring 12 different Vosne-Romanee.

We've split the wines into three brackets starting with a bracket of 4 Villages Vosne-Romanee. These will allow you to hone the palate and get an idea of the style of Vosne-Romanee. 

We'll then move on to the next bracket featuring 4 lieux-dits. Here the varying terroirs of Vosne-Romanee can be explored with wines from all corners of the Vosne compass. 

To finish we have an intriguing Premier Cru bracket starting with the famous Les Suchots and concluding with 3 different Les Beaux Monts, one of my favourite vineyards. There's a nice little menage a trois here between maker and vintage.

We have 6 wines from each of the 2016 and 2015 vintages. They are both great - it is a matter of style as to which you prefer. This is a great opportunity to taste and compare.
 
The lunch will be at Ryne. Chef Donovan Cooke will prepare a matching 4-course menu.
 
Donovan Cooke For those of you who don't know Donovan he has quite a CV. Starting in Europe, he worked his way through the Savoy Hotel, Waterside Inn in Bray, Harvey's in London and La Cote St Jacques in Burgundy. In 1997 he shifted his focus to Melbourne where he co-opened the highly influential restaurant Est Est Est, followed by Luxe (awarded 3 hats in its first year) and Ondine (Best New Restaurant, The Age Good Food Guide).
 
Donovan was presented with the reigns of the Derby Restaurant and Bar at The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club. He served as Chef de Cuisine for the next 6 and a half years. He has now returned to Melbourne to start this new venture - Ryne. To view Ryne's website click here.
