Le Clos du Caillou, a 53 hectare wine estate with Côtes-du-Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations, is located in Courthézon in the South of France.

The property came in possession of the Pouizin family in 1956. Until 1996 the property was run by Claude Pouizin, who until 1993 sold most of his yield to negociants. In 1996 his daughter Sylvie and son-in-law Jean-Denis Vacherons took charge and the quality of the wines has skyrocketed.

The property has 9 hectares of AOC Chateauneuf-du-Pape. These are on the sandier soils of the appellation's northeast sector in the lieux-dits of Les Bedines, Guigasse and Pignan, right alongside Rayas.

The domain also makes extraordinarily good Cotes du Rhone from 44 ha of vineyards. The Cotes du Rhone Bouquet des Garrigues comes from fields just outside the border of AOC Chateauneuf-du- Pape. The story goes that in the 1930's, the owner, armed with a hunting rifle, refused to receive experts seeking to delimit the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Thus, Clos du Caillou remains a kind of enclave, with many of the very old vines classified as Cotes-du-Rhone, rather than Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as they would have been!
Joe Czerwinski of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate says "
The consistent high quality of this estate's wines makes it a perennial favorite of mine. New developments here include the addition of purchased wine to the entry-level cuvées, without any loss of quality. Winemaker Bruno Gaspard admits 2016 is a good vintage, grinning when asked about it. "It's not too solar, not heavy," he said. The 2017s at this address boast an extra level of concentration that must be the result of the vintage's low yields, yet they remain supple and balanced. Although two potentially perfect red Châteauneuf-du-Papes lead the list, don't overlook the various Côtes du Rhône bottlings, which often represent great value, or the white wines, all of which seem better every year."

2017 is another great vintage for Le Clos du Caillou.

Until 5pm today we offer the full range at a 25% Pre Arrival discount instead of the usual 15%.

Caillou Reserve NV label Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
Le Clos du Caillou's 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape La Reserve continues this bottling's winning ways, making three straight vintages in which I've rated it at least 97 points. Sourced from old-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre in the lieux-dits of La Guigasse and Pignan, it's rich, creamy and plush, yet it seems effortless despite the concentration. Mocha and caramelized berries finish with great length and energy. I can't wait to see how it turns out from bottle. 98-
100 Points
Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz 2017
Landed Price $173.95
Normal Pre Arrival Price $147.95
Special Pre Arrival Price Today $129.95
Caillou Chateauneuf Quartz
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Sourced as always from the Les Cassanets lieu-dit, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz offers a slightly darker fruit profile than the Les Safres or Le Caillou bottlings. Boysenberry and cherry fruit is subtly influenced by dried spices and cocoa powder in this full-bodied, rich and concentrated wine. It's another stunning wine from this stellar property.
 95-97 Points

Caillou Chateauneuf Safres Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Like the other 2017s here, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Safres is full-bodied, concentrated and velvety in texture, while boasting exceptional aromas and flavors of red raspberries and ripe cherries. Ripe, supple and long, it should be a winner. 93-95 Points

The 2017 Cotes du Rhone Les Quartz looks to be something special. Full-bodied, concentrated and velvety, it delivers intense fruit notes of ripe raspberries and stone fruit that linger on the finish. 91-94 Points

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: Tasted from foudre, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone Le Bouquet des Garrigues looks to be a rich, velvety version of this cuvée. Full-bodied, intense and loaded with cherry and raspberry fruit, it still boasts lovely namesake hints of lavender and thyme. 90-93 Points

Bouley Volnay 2016 label
Domaine Pierrick Bouley Volnay 2016
36 bottles available
A steal at $69.95
It shouldn't happen but occasionally a wine arrives from France and we forget it is here. That happened with the Volnay 2016 from Domaine Pierrick Bouley. In 2016, the loss of crop due to the hail saw the quantity of this wine reduced to crazy low levels. The Volnay produced just 10hl/ha, way below the volume allowed for Grand Crus. Production was a fraction of usual and our allocation was reduced accordingly.

The goods new is that with such low cropping levels the quality and intensity of the resulting wine is superior to normal. A significant proportion of the fruit in Bouley's Volnay comes from the vineyard of Le Pluchots which lies below the Premier Crus Carelles and Les Ronceret. The soil here contains a little more clay and produces a wine with depth and restrained power. Bouley fans may remember the domaine did a separate bottling in 2015 when they had more volume.

It has been well reviewed with both critics noting the intensity and concentration.
The Fine Wine Review: 10 hl/ha. This wine had received no SO2 at the time I tasted it. This wine is dense and dark-fruited, intense, chewy, and long. It is more powerful than the foregoing wines.

Points

Vinous Media, Neal Martin:
The 2016 Volnay has a light and airy bouquet, pure and quite elegant in style. The palate is defined by edgy black fruit laced with tea and bay leaves, a pinch of white pepper towards the finish. Cropped at just 10hl/ha, there is concentration and depth to this fine Volnay from Pierrick Bouley. 88 Points
