Domaine Francois Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots 1999. A Candidate for Grand Cru Stat

Gaunoux Francois Grands Epenots 1999 Header
A Remarkable Wine from the Great 1999 Vintage

"For years now, Premier Cru "Les Grands Epenots" has been evaluated for Grand Cru promotion by the INAO (France's authority for wine designations) and many Burgundy producers will tell you it's only a matter of time until it happens. This prized site produces some of the greatest Pinot Noir in all of Côte de Beaune.

Even if promotion doesn't come, you're still getting Grand Cru quality without the associated price. François Gaunoux isn't some novice either; his wines are honest, tried-and-true, revered. Now an octogenarian, he's been working in the vines since the age of 15. Since taking over for his father many decades ago, François has tracked down and purchased parcels in Côte de Beaune's finest sites, never once buying grapes or leasing land.
Eighty-something François Gaunoux is a Burgundy fixture. His daughter, Claudine, has worked alongside him since 2000, crafting traditionally styled reds and whites from estate-owned vines in the Côte de Beaune. Domaine Gaunoux has been passed down for generations, maintaining ultra-traditional methods in both vineyard and cellar, farming and crafting everything by hand. Ironically, François has spearheaded the implementation of modern techniques while Claudine has stuck to their historically traditional approach.
The Gaunoux property is based in Meursault, but, in terms of their overall lineup, Pommard is a headliner. They bottle four different wines from the appellation, including this one from the Premier Cru "Les Grands Epenots," which is known for a higher concentration of clay; a mixture known to produce a burlier, more muscular style of red Burgundy. After hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo a lengthy 3-4 week fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for increased weight and power. The wine is aged only in tank-no barrels whatsoever-and François and Claudine typically let it rest further in bottle before allowing it to leave (typically on its third birthday). Their ancient cellars are quiet, stock-still, and free of critics' footprints; if you ever find yourself lucky enough to enter this wine vault, you'll find dust-caked bottles that have remained undisturbed since the early 1900s. It is breathtaking down there." Somm Select
Today we are delighted to present the jewel in the domaine's cellar - the Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots from the stunning 1999 vintage. Even at nearly 20 years of age this wine, direct from the domaines cellars, is youthful. I am sure there is another 20+ years ahead of it.
Instead of the usual 15% Pre Arrival Discount we present the wine at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount. This is a serious 1999 for the cellar at a price seldom seen. Grab some bottles whilst it is still available.

Bill Nanson - The Burgundy Report: A very, very interesting mix of herbs and complex fruits. Mouth-filling, plenty of (balanced) tannin. Now there's a small burst of fruit flavour. Good length - I like this a lot.

And there are great reviews all over the internet...

"This beauty is finally beginning to display some development as the perfumed and complex nose mixes both primary and secondary earthy red berry fruit, underbrush and a touch of animale character. The generous and quite fleshy medium-bodied flavors possess excellent volume as well as buckets of dry extract that almost render the firm and ripe tannins invisible on the massively long finish. Wow, this is a stunner of a wine with still plenty of upside potential remaining though with air this could be approached with pleasure."

"As rustic as it is sophisticated, Gaunoux's '99 Pommard Les Grands Épenots is a master-class in winemaking. Sweet red and blue fruits dance against a backdrop of mushrooms, balsamic herbs, forest floor, bacon fat and warm pipe tobacco. Smooth, polished tannins find their complement in surprisingly lively acidity, while copious dry extract clings to the palate. Resonant and refined, this wine is fantastic. Gaunoux's southeastern-facing Les Grands Épenots parcel sports marl and chalk soils, which offer tremendous drainage. The grapes for this wine ferment for about three weeks in temperature-controlled vats, and then the wine ages for about 18 months before bottling."

"Absolutely drop dead great showing. Nose is autumnal, deep funk, decaying earth, flowers. Dark. Palate is '99 tight, but also rich, slightly sappy cherry fruit. Grippy finish. Great, great showing."

Noellat Charles MSD label

Charles Noellat Morey-St-Denis 1999

The Noellats are an established family in the Cote de Nuits. There were two brothers, Charles and Ernest who were prolific in the early part of the 20th century. Charles' son, Andre, has a daughter Odlile who married Alain Hudelot forming Domaine Hudelot-Noellat.

Ernest had two sons - George and Henri. Henri married Marie-Therese Jayer, daughter of the iconic Henri Jayer's Uncle Edouard. Their son Michel was the founder of Domaine Michel Noellat who we import.

Charles Noellat was a big name of yesteryear. Much of the domaine and vineyards, being of such high quality, were purchased by Domaine Leroy.

These bottles have lain undisturbed in France since bottling and are in outstanding condition.
