Top Reds from last night's Burgundy Dinner

Last night's dinner with Vincent Delcher at Project 49 was just terrific. We shared 14 Burgundies from 2016 and 2015 and every one was most enjoyable. It was fantastic to compare vintages and as I expected there was support for both years.

For those of you who weren't there this morning I present the reds that are still available from last night's selection. All of the wines are available at a 15% discount but quantities are now very low.

If you are looking for a gorgeous aromatic Vosne-Romanee do not miss the Clerget Violettes 2016. And the two 2016 Nuits-St-Georges are knockouts!

Domaine Christian Clerget Vosne-Romanee Les Violettes 2016
Normal Price $227.95
Special $193.95
24 bottles available

(from .50 ha parcel planted in 1946; Les Violettes abuts Clos de Vougeot). This is also quite elegant and spicier with its blend of both red and blue pinot fruit, violet, sandalwood and an interesting hint of hoisin. The round, delicious, sappy and caressing medium-bodied flavors possess fine concentration before culminating in a firm but not austere finale. A high quality Vosne villages. 2023+. 89-91 Points

Domaine Christian Clerget Vosne-Romanee Les Violettes 2015
Normal Price $195.00
Special $165.75
13 bottles available

Burghound: (from .50 ha parcel planted in 1946; Les Violettes abuts Clos de Vougeot). As the name would suggest there are indeed nuances of violets on the perfumed nose of red and dark currants that is liberally laced with various spice elements. The sleek, focused and vibrant middle weight flavors possess excellent depth and persistence for a villages level wine; moreover the natural class of Vosne is evident and this is worth checking out. 2021+.
89-91 Points

Domaine Philippe Cheron Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux 2016
Normal Price $172.95
Special $146.95

Darren Harris:
The 2016 is deeply coloured with reds at the centre. Cool fruits on the nose with bags of mineral and spice notes. On the palate the mineral and spice notes dance around the dark fruits. I particularly like the way this builds in the mouth displaying plenty of extract and the underlying freshness of this high, cool site. It is powerful and intense but not heavy, the muscularity is finely tuned. Benchmark Vosne-Romanee from a classic vintage.
Domaine Philippe Cheron Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux 2015
Normal Price $155.50
Special $132.15
19 bottles available

Cheron Vosne Label Darren Harris: Les Barreaux, made famous in recent years by Domaine Anne Gros, is wonderfully sited lying above Richebourg and Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux and alongside Petit Monts and Beaux Monts. Like its big brothers it produces a deeply coloured wine and those with an interest in wines of yesteryear will be delighted to know that Les Barreaux played a big part in the legendary Henri Jayer's Village Vosne-Romanee. Dark in colour. Aromatic nose with blacker fruits than the two Chambolles. Spices and minerals. Concentrated with plenty of extract and an underlying coolness. Quite muscular - more Richebourg than Romanee-St-Vivant in style. This is a serious lieu-dit which will age magnificently. And it is extremely well priced.

Domaine Philippe Cheron Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 2016
Normal Price $197.50
Special $167.95

Cheron NSG Murgers label
Darren Harris: April 2017: The first vintage of this wine as the vines have returned from a long-term rental arrangement. 80 year old vines. 100% whole bunch. Jumps out of the glass. Unbelievable aromatics! Red-black, racy, lifted nose of cherry and spice with many layer below. Intense, deep, mineral. Superb acidity. Very Vosne-Romanee! Buy! The most impressive wine of the trip.
November 2017:
Is it possible that this wine is even better than when I tasted it seven months ago? The depth of colour is something to behold. The nose is exotic in the same way that makes La Tache so special. Lifted aromatics of Asian spice, tea and small tight fruits. Complex under notes from the whole bunch. Gosh this is good. If Philippe told me it was Grand Cru Vosne I would believe him. Absolutely Grand Cru quality. An exceptional wine.

Domaine Jean Chauvenet Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
Normal Price $199.95
Special $169.95
12 bottles available

chauvenet Perrieres label new
Darren Harris: Chauvenet own parcels in seven Nuits Premier Crus including Les Vaucrains, Les Damodes and Les Bousselots but it is their small 0.23 hectare parcel in Les Perrieres that has me gob-smacked in 2016. The wine combines red and black fruits in a lifted, aromatic nose with minerals in spades. It is fresh and vibrant yet deeply flavoured with subtle spices playing in the background. 1/3 new oak contributes to the freshness and ensures the wine remains lifted and aromatic. This is really fine NSG Premier Cru with an elegant character yet never losing its stamp of origin. Only 3 barrels produced in 2016. Very fine quality.
Domaine Jean Chauvenet Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 2015
Normal Price $199.95
Special $169.95

chauvenet Damodes Label
Burghound(from a .28 ha parcel). This is more expressive than it usually is at this early stage with its spiced array of plum, violet and earth scents where the latter element can also be found on the delicious, vibrant and stony flavors that possess a taut muscularity. I like the combination of power and refinement displayed by the quite serious but not rustic finale. Good stuff that should age effortless over the next 12 to 15 years. 2027+. 90-92 Points
Domaine Christian Clerget Echezeaux En Orveaux Grand Cru 2016
Normal Price $367.95
Special $312.50
25 bottles available

Clerget Echezeaux En Orveaux label
(from a 1.1 ha parcel located in En Orveaux that was planted in 1947, from yields of only 8 hl/ha). Reduction. The exceptionally rich, full-bodied and incredibly dense flavors possess outstanding power yet the palate impression is almost lush thanks to the remarkable level of dry extract that mostly buffers the robust, serious and built-to-age finish. Like the Charmes, despite the presence of a very firm tannic spine, this should be approachable young. 2028+. 91-94 Points

Domaine Georges Lignier Clos-St-Denis Grand Cru 2016
Normal Price $363.50
Special $308.95
40 bottles available

Lignier Clos-St-Denis label Tim Atkin MW:
The domaine's holdings of Clos St Denis are comparatively extensive at 1.49 hectares. This was showing a little reduction when I tasted it in Burgundy and again in London, so it needs time in bottle. Showing the classic freshness of the Grand Cru, it's a balanced, subtle, focused wine with loganberry and red cherry fruit and savoury tannins. 2026-34. 94 Points
Domaine Georges Lignier Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2016
Normal Price $455.95
Special $387.50
38 bottles available

Lignier Roche Label
Vinous: Stephen Tanzer:
(the estate owns five plots on a range of different soil, with the vines averaging about 60 years of age): Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry accented by brown spices; the nose suggests a bigger wine than the Clos Saint-Denis. The large-scaled and deeper in the mouth but tightly wound, with its red fruit flavors complicated by soil-driven notes of menthol, stone, dried flowers, spices and underbrush. A bit more powerful and tannic than the Clos Saint-Denis, this wine will also require a minimum of five or six years of aging upon release. 91-94 Points
Jancis Robinson:
More protected from cold wind than Clos St-Denis. Less elegant and more powerful than his Clos St-Denis. More Morey, he says.
Shaded ruby. Sweet and sumptuous on the nose. Very rich and lively with strong fruity notes - raspberries? Taffeta texture. No monster! 'It's still mine', says winemaker Benoît Stehly. Good mineral finish. Very clean. 18/20

Burgundy Dinner Corcia Sydney header
Dinner with Patricia Corcia, Burgundy Exporter at Fix Wine Bar + Restaurant Sydney

Not everyone in Burgundy does things the same way. In the past the domaines, negociants and wholesalers held stocks of aged wines to supply the trade. However, financial pressures have seen this service all but disappear.
However, there still remains a small band of Burgundians who do base at least part of their business on aged wines. Prestige des Grands Vins de France are one such business. Patricia Corcia, the General Manager, will be in Australia at the end of October and will host a dinner featuring a selection of wines from their portfolio.
The wines will span 4 decades with the youngest being from 2017 and the oldest from 1976. All have come direct from the domaines.
This is a great opportunity to sample some aged bottles including three Grand Cru Reds.
