Vosne-Romanee 1er Crus and more at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount

In April this year I made my first visit to Domaine Bruno Desaunay-Bissey. The domaine had been imported into Australia some years ago but I had not had the opportunity to taste any recent vintages.

At the domaine I was offered the range of 2016's plus a selection of back vintages to taste. I was amazed at how the domaine has developed. The 2016's (what there were of them anyway) were universally exceptional with really deep colours and vibrant, fresh fruit. Even the Bourgogne was a top wine.

Unfortunately, the domaine suffered badly in the frost of 2016. Quantities produced are small and there was no Chambolle-Musigny, Echezeaux or Grands Echezeaux at all! That's got to be tough on your cash flow!

Today I present the four cuvees in my allocation. The two Vosne-Romanee 1er Crus are knockouts. it is important to note that most of the cuvees here are Vielles Vignes with some very old vines producing wines with a superb, creamy intensity.

Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2016
Landed Price $199.95
Pre Arrival Price $149.95
desaunay-bissey beaux monts label
Les Beaux Monts is located alongside the Grand Cru Echezeaux and 1er Cru Les Suchots. It can produce exceptionally fine wines.

Darren Harris: Vines planted in 1959. Same deep colour as Les Rouges. A little more on the nose, intense and very pure with cool dark fruits, rose petal and spice. Beautiful fruit! Lovely texture (old vines) with perfect fruit weight and a long, fresh and focused finish. Really very special. This is going to be great with a few years in the cellar.

Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Rouges 2016
Landed Price $189.95
Pre Arrival Price $142.50

desaunay-bissey vosne rouges label The lowest part of Les Rouges is basically an extension of the Grand Cru Echezeaux. The soil is full of tiny pebbles and the high elevation means the grapes take longer to ripen.

Darren Harris: Vines planted in 1957. Purple and deep on the rim, bright centre. Served after the Vosne-Romanee Villages. Gorgeous nose with aromatic, sweet, juicy fruit on the nose. Black cherries, florals, just a hint of oak. Minerals and spice. This is much more layered with an appealing vitality. Finishes long with lifted spicy notes and cool, refined tannins. Very smart indeed.

Gevrey-Chambertin 2016
Landed Price $123.95
Pre Arrival Price $92.95

desaunay-bissey gevrey label Darren Harris: Very deep purple. Dark fruits with mineral earth notes and some elegant florals. Sappy on the palate with quite a savoury character. This has good weight and will drink well early, although 5 years in the cellar will add complexity. Gevrey-Chambertin from a Vosne-Romanee domaine.

Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2016
Landed Price $57.95
Pre Arrival Price $43.50

desaunay-bissey bourgogne label cropped Darren Harris: From grapes grown in Flagey between Vosne-Romanee and Vougeot. Medium colour. Juicy Vosne-Romanee style nose with sappy fruit and pleasing freshness. Light on its feet, aromatic and charming. Why would you drink Bourgogne from up in the hills when you can have this?

Cheron Vosne Label
Domaine Philippe Cheron Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux 2016
21 bottles available
Super Offer

Everyone loves Vosne-Romanee and from a vintage like 2016 it is certainly a very seductive beast.

One issue with shipping multiple containers in a short space of time is that some wines get lost in the chaos. Whilst doing some work on the container scheduled to arrive yesterday I noticed that we have not promoted the Domaine Philippe Cheron Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux 2016. In fact I had not even added my tasting note from my visit to the domaine late last year.

The 2015 was a very popular wine and by rights the 2016 should be just as popular. But if I don't tell anyone about it I guess I can't expect it to sell out.

Les Barreaux, made famous in recent years by Domaine Anne Gros, is wonderfully sited lying above Richebourg and Vosne-Romanee Cros Parantoux and alongside Petit Monts and Beaux Monts. Like its big brothers it produces a deeply coloured wine and those with an interest in wines of yesteryear will be delighted to know that Les Barreaux played a big part in the legendary Henri Jayer's Vosne-Romanee.

Darren Harris:The 2016 is deeply coloured with reds at the centre. Cool fruits on the nose with bags of mineral and spice notes. On the palate the mineral and spice notes dance around the dark fruits. I particularly like the way this builds in the mouth displaying plenty of extract and the underlying freshness of this high, cool site. It is powerful and intense but not heavy, the muscularity is finely tuned. Benchmark Vosne-Romanee from a classic vintage.

Tim Atkin MW: The result is a luxurious and mineral Vosne-Romanée with superb color, a velour-like and rich fruit with a discreet touch of pepper. Under the rich fruit there are both structure and tannin which promise great development opportunities
