Bettane and Desseauve awards Domaine Bertagna's Clos St-Denis 2016 One of the Top 10 French Wines of the Year!

Bettane and Desseauve are France's top wine critics. Each year they taste and review over 10,000 French Wines.
This morning I was delighted to receive news that Domaine Bertagna's Clos St-Denis 2016 has received their highest award - being named One of France's Top 10 Wines of the Year.
And that's not just for Burgundy. It is for all French wines. You can imagine the big names on the list (The 100 Point Chateau d'Yquem 2015 was one of the wines - click here).
When I tasted the wine at the domaine earlier this year I was blown away by the complexity and depth. It seems Bettane and Desseauve have the same opinion.
Domaine Bertagna is 21 hectares in size with 18 different appellations. In a normal vintage they have 4 Grand Crus and 7 Premier Crus.
I have followed the domaine for about 20 years. A year or so back I was offered the opportunity to import the wines. A visit and extensive tasting provided plenty of reasons to add the domaine to our portfolio and we shipped the tremendous 2015 vintage.
Bertagna EvaThe wines were very well received. Their Grand Cru Clos St-Denis along with interesting vineyards like their monopole Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perriere really piqued the interest of Burgundy lovers and sold out rapidly.
In 2016 their top wine again was unquestionably the Clos St-Denis Grand Cru.
The domaine has a significant 0.53 hectares of old vines from which they produce a wine of admirable intensity and complexity.
The Clos St-Denis is deeply coloured, powerful and very ageworthy. Like the 2015 it has much immediate appeal but is really a wine for the cellar.
The wine is in stock and to celebrate the award we present it at a 15% discount - the same as if you purchased the wine Pre Arrival. Get some in the cellar and drink over the next 20 years.

Bettane and Dessauve:
One of the 10 Best French Wines of the Year!
The most profound Clos St-Denis of our tasting in a vintage particularly favourable to this climat. Very dark fruit, structure, huge power and mouthfeel with a most complex finish. Incredible breed - a lot to experience - an undeniable success in 2016. 19/20

Darren Harris
Very dense red-purple. An enticing nose of bright, fresh fruit, with much spice and a touch of graphite. The palate is multi-layered with deep fruit flavours and more spicy elements. Intense but not heavy. There is oak but it is coated by such tremendous fruit that the impression is of silkiness. Balanced and precise with a tangy note that Bertagna (and indeed most Clos St-Denis) shows every vintage. From 50 year old vines and built to age. My favourite wine at Bertagna (again).

A Grand Cru for the Ages!

Burgundy Dinner Corcia Sydney header
Dinner with Patricia Corcia, Burgundy Exporter at Fix St James Sydney

Not everyone in Burgundy does things the same way. In the past the domaines, negociants and wholesalers held stocks of aged wines to supply the trade. However, financial pressures have seen this service all but disappear.
However, there still remains a small band of Burgundians who do base at least part of their business on aged wines. Prestige des Grands Vins de France are one such business. Patricia Corcia, the General Manager, will be in Australia at the end of October and will host a dinner featuring a selection of wines from their portfolio.
The wines will span 4 decades with the youngest being from 2017 and the oldest from 1976. All have come direct from the domaines.
This is a great opportunity to sample some aged bottles including three Grand Cru Reds.
