My top picks from our next container

I'm often asked "what should I buy?".

We have another container due at the end of this month. It is packed full of 2016 Burgundies.

I have selected 9 of my top bottles - wines that would be at home in any serious cellar.

They are all wines that have impressed me greatly and until the container lands all are available at Pre Arrival Prices.
In most cases quantities remaining are very small.

Bichot Malconsorts
James Suckling Tasting Report:
Beautiful crushed roses with an array of fresh raspberries and red cherries, as well as light mocha and oak spices in the background. The palate has excellent tannin maturity and depth. A bold, explosive finish. This is exceptional. This elegant vintage has delivered a wine with real clarity and detail. But still needs some time. Try from 2024. 94-95 Points

Tim Atkin MW: The Bichot holdings run to 1.75 hectares and cover both the upper and lower parts of the Premier Cru. This is a sturdy, almost austere expression of the site with serious tannins, dense, chewy black fruits and a touch of mint. Very well made, but needs considerable time in bottle. 2028-38. 94 Points
Domaine Philippe Cheron Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 2016

Cheron NSG Murgers label
Darren Harris: April 2017: The first vintage of this wine as the vines have returned from a long-term rental arrangement. 80 year old vines. 100% whole bunch. Jumps out of the glass. Unbelievable aromatics! Red-black, racy, lifted nose of cherry and spice with many layer below. Intense, deep, mineral. Superb acidity. Very Vosne-Romanee! Buy! The most impressive wine of the trip.
November 2017:
Is it possible that this wine is even better than when I tasted it seven months ago? The depth of colour is something to behold. The nose is exotic in the same way that makes La Tache so special. Lifted aromatics of Asian spice, tea and small tight fruits. Complex under notes from the whole bunch. Gosh this is good. If Philippe told me it was Grand Cru Vosne I would believe him. Absolutely Grand Cru quality. An exceptional wine.

AS Vosne Label
Darren Harris:
A gift from Arnaud's grandfather. This parcel of Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux lies in the area partly surrounded by the 1er Crus Les Petits Monts and Cros Parantoux, just up the slope from Richebourg. It is a super site further enhanced by the fact that the vines are old - between 50 and 60 years of age. Arnaud and Sophie's very first wine is a killer! Not surprising with the family history at domaines Sirugue and Georges Noellat. Yet the young couple have decided to make the wine their own way using the experience gained both in Burgundy and abroad.

They have used 50% whole bunch (more than their respective family domaines) and 40% new oak. There has been little intervention - the quality and style of the vineyard allowed to shine through. Whilst their family domaines had both bottled, the Domaine A&S Vosne-Romanee Les Barreaux was still in barrel when I visited late March 2018.

Deep red. Expressive, layered nose of dark cherry, violets and Asian spice with a discreet note of new oak. The palate is very fresh and displays the same character with a rich, velvety texture no doubt from the old vines. Intense and focused. This has the extract and mouthfeel of a top Vosne Premier Cru finishing with serious length from ripe, refined tannins suggesting a great future ahead .  An outstanding first release and I urge all Vosne lovers to grab a few bottles or more. Not only will you have a super wine but you will have priority for future releases.
Domaine Jean Chauvenet Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
Landed Price $199.95
Pre Arrival Price $169.95
25 bottles available

chauvenet Perrieres label new
Darren Harris: Chauvenet own parcels in seven Nuits Premier Crus including Les Vaucrains, Les Damodes and Les Bousselots but it is their small 0.23 hectare parcel in Les Perrieres that has me gob-smacked in 2016. The wine combines red and black fruits in a lifted, aromatic nose with minerals in spades. It is fresh and vibrant yet deeply flavoured with subtle spices playing in the background. 1/3 new oak contributes to the freshness and ensures the wine remains lifted and aromatic. This is really fine NSG Premier Cru with an elegant character yet never losing its stamp of origin. Only 3 barrels produced in 2016. Very fine quality.
Domaine Gilbert et Christine Felettig Vosne-Romanee 2016
Landed Price $140.95
Pre Arrival Price $119.50
25 bottles available

Felettig Vosne Label
John Gilman "View from the Cellar"This was another of the fortunate cuvées at Domaine Felettig in 2016, as there was virtually no frost here and the wine has also turned out very, very well for its level. The nose is pure and expressive, wafting from the glass in a classic blend of black raspberries, black cherries, gamebird, Vosne spices, a lovely base of dark soil tones and a touch of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very mineral in profile, with a sappy core of black fruit, excellent focus and balance, fine-grained tannins and impressive lift and backend tension on the well balanced finish. Another really good villages. 2023-2060. 91+ Points
Hospices de Beaune Volnay 1er Cru Cuvee Blondeau 2016
Landed Price $199.95
Pre Arrival Price $149.95
82 bottles available

Hospices Blondeau label
Blondeau is named after Francois Blondeau, a serial benefactor, who amongst other donations provided the bells for the Hospices de Charite in 1811 (which can still be heard today), restored the church in Volnay, built a school and finally donated all his vineyards in Volnay and Pommard.

It is an assemblage from the Premier Crus Champans, Taillipieds, Ronceret and Mitans, most of which have great vine age.

Darren Harris:
Deep, saturated purple. Quite expressive even at this early stage with cool but intense spicy red and black fruits. Nice fruit volume on the palate with underlying acidity providing freshness. Like all top Volnay it has a sense of style; concentration without excess weight.

It is early days but this has all the hallmarks of a classic Volnay from great vineyards. It will interesting to follow in barrel over the next year.

Albert Bichot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses 2016
Landed Price $765.00
Pre Arrival Price $649.95
10 bottles available

Bichot Amoureuses Label Tim Atkin MW:
In one sense, this is barely a négociant wine since the grapes are purchased from Alain Serveau, Bichot's long-term winemaker. It's a wonderful expression of this famous Grand Cru in all but name, with some whole bunch sap, lacy tannins, and the kind of sweet, succulent berry fruit that drives Pinotphiles wild. 2022-30. 96 Points
Domaine Georges Lignier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2016
Landed Price $567.95
Pre Arrival Price $482.95
12 bottles available

Lignier Bonnes-Mares Label Tim Atkin MW:
Despite the fact that his domaine is based in Morey-St-Denis, Benoit Stehly's 0.22 hectares are on the Chambolle side of the Grand Cru on red soils. This is the most impressive of his three Grand Cru bottlings in 2016. It's another wine that needs time, showing some reduction and firmish tannins, but the underlying fruit is sweet and well balanced. 2026-36. 95 Points

Vinous: Stephen Tanzer:
(these vines on red soil in Chambolle-Musigny date back to 1926, with an average age of at least 70 years, according to Stehly; three barrels made, vs. a normal five): Bright medium red. Rather backward aromas of raspberry, menthol and spices convey a cool, lightly medicinal aspect. Densely packed and fresh, with a captivating sweetness perfectly countered by a salty element. The raspberry fruit is perfumed by dried rose petal and spicy soil tones. Finishes with terrific subtle floral length and lift. Stehly had previously harvested these vines late because he thought the fruit needed to be very mature, but he picked early in 2016 owing to the frost and liked the results so much that he may pick earlier in the future. Due to the small crop, Stehly vinified this wine in a small plastic tank and was unable to increase the fermentation temperature above 26 degrees C. (he prefers 30); this no doubt partly accounts for the wine's cooler perfume. 92-94 Points

Domaine Christian Clerget Echezeaux
En Orveaux Grand Cru 2016
Landed Price $367.95
Pre Arrival Price $312.50
25 bottles available

Clerget Echezeaux En Orveaux label
Burghound: (from a 1.1 ha parcel located in En Orveaux that was planted in 1947, from yields of only 8 hl/ha). Reduction. The exceptionally rich, full-bodied and incredibly dense flavors possess outstanding power yet the palate impression is almost lush thanks to the remarkable level of dry extract that mostly buffers the robust, serious and built-to-age finish. Like the Charmes, despite the presence of a very firm tannic spine, this should be approachable young. 2028+. 91-94 Points
