An Unique Red from the Only Winery in Paris

With love from the city of love...

Les Vignerons Parisiens is the first and only urban winery in the French capital. Getting permission to open in the Marais district, not far from the Centre Georges Pompidou, took the four owners quite some time.

While their first vintage under the Vignerons Parisiens label was only in 2015, general manager Matthieu Bosser, oenologist Emmanuel Gagnepain and biodynamic viticulture consultant Frédéric Duseigneur have plenty of experience. Between them their clients include Domaine La Barroche and Domaine des Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Parent and Château de Chassagne-Montrachet in Burgundy and Domaine Bunan in Bandol.
Matthieu made contact with me before Prowein this year. Some samples were sent to me in Burgundy and I was most impressed, particularly with the 100% Cinsault "Turbigo".

Jancis Robinson says "The wines may be made in the centre of Paris but all their grapes are hand-harvested by their own team of pickers in biodynamic and organic vineyards belonging to four growers in Visan and Sabran in the southern Rhône, farmers with whom they have been working for 15 years. They insist on making only one wine from each vineyard: no blending of vineyards or varieties so that the focus is on that little patch of ground and what it can produce.

The grapes are harvested into small boxes during the morning and are taken on a 15-hour journey by refrigerated truck - 'a fridge on wheels' - to the winery. Because vinfication takes place in Paris, the wine has to be labelled as Vin de France, but this hardly seems to be a disadvantage these days.

I tasted all the current releases of their wines in London recently, thanks to Richard Kelley MW , and was struck not only by the consistently high quality across all the range but also by the marked freshness that is not always the characteristic of southern Rhône wines. Kelley explained that they pick earlier than their neighbours and that their vineyards are all at an elevation of about 350 m, which means they are a little cooler and keep higher levels of acidity in the fruit even when it is fully ripe.

Turbigo is made from 100% Cinsault, a grape variety which has not been highly esteemed in the past but which I have always had a soft spot for and whose time has definitely come.

I have tasted both the 2016 and the 2017 vintages of the Turbigo Cinsault and scored them both highly at 17/20. Both are vibrant with red fruit - small wild berries rather than cultivated strawberries - and that hint of orange that I often find on top-quality Cinsault. The wines are deliciously dry but still juicy and fine-boned, with a framework of fine, chalky tannins and refreshing acidity, seductively clothed in pure fruit. The fruit and the structure are beautifully married even in such young wines."
Today we present the latest release of Turbigo. Made, as always from 100% Cinsault, it is a wine of great character and interest. And of course it is from the only winery in Paris! I am sure for buyers of the wine we will be able to arrange a visit next time you are in the "city of love".

The wine is available at a 25% Pre Arrival Discount. A wine for lovers of something special!

Turbigo label Jancis Robinson: Mid purple-rimmed cherry red. So vibrant on the nose: dusty, nervy red-cherry fruit with a touch of cranberry zing, small wild red berries. On the palate, still all that energy and vitality but balanced and made more serious by the fine chalky tannins. Bone dry and yet full of fruit. The juiciness of the fruit and serious firmness to the texture - a lot of paper-fine tannins that give it rocky mineral character - marry beautifully. I'd give this at least another year in bottle but I am equally sure it will age for a decade or more. Impressive length. Shows the great potential of this variety when taken seriously. 17/20

Les Darons Languedoc rouge 2015 Case of 12 Bottles

Once a source only for cheap bulk wine, Languedoc is now proving its ability to make wonderful terroir wines at very reasonable prices. The region is thriving with so many exciting wine producers you hardly know where to turn.

The wines of the Languedoc have a lot in common with their relatives from the southern Rhone. Traditional Rhone varieties like Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache and Carignan are favoured by those with an eye to quality.

Darons label

Jeb Dunnuck:
What looks like another great vintage here, the 2015 AOP Languedoc les Darons is made from 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 5% Carignan; grapes were completely destemmed, and fermented and aged all in concrete tanks. It sees absolutely no oak whatsoever. This medium to full-bodied, plump, rounded, downright sexy 2015 has lots of blueberry, violets, and jammy black cherry aromas and flavors; it has terrific purity of fruit, good acidity and an overriding sense of elegance. If it came from a more prestigious appellation in the southern Rhone, it would go for three times the price.  91-93 Points

Landed Price $390.00 a Case of 12 Bottles
Pre Arrival Price $279.00
