Le Clos du Caillou, a 53 hectare wine estate with Côtes-du-Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations, is located in Courthézon in the South of France.

The property came in possession of the Pouizin family in 1956. Until 1996 the property was run by Claude Pouizin, who until 1993 sold most of his yield to negociants. In 1996 his daughter Sylvie and son-in-law Jean-Denis Vacherons took charge and the quality of the wines has skyrocketed.

The property has 9 hectares of AOC Chateauneuf-du-Pape. These are on the sandier soils of the appellation's northeast sector in the lieux-dits of Les Bedines, Guigasse and Pignan, right alongside Rayas.

The domain also makes extraordinarily good Cotes du Rhone from 44 ha of vineyards. The Cotes du Rhone Bouquet des Garrigues comes from fields just outside the border of AOC Chateauneuf-du- Pape. The story goes that in the 1930's, the owner, armed with a hunting rifle, refused to receive experts seeking to delimit the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Thus, Clos du Caillou remains a kind of enclave, with many of the very old vines classified as Cotes-du-Rhone, rather than Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as they would have been!
Joe Czerwinski of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate says "On my visit, it was great to meet the young Marilou Vacheron, back to join the family estate after five years of business school, and the longtime (since 2002) winemaker Bruno Gaspard. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2010. Gaspard compares the 2016s to 2010 or 2005, he says, "but better."

If the reviews are anything to go by 2016 is going to be one of the legendary Chateauneuf-du-Pape vintages.

Overnight the domaine forwarded their latest reviews. Both The Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck visited a second time and retasted the finished wines. Both increased their scores - The Wine Advocate awarding the Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve a perfect 100 Points to go with Jeb Dunnick's 99 Points.

Caillopu Chateauneuf Reserve Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
A 60-40 blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre from the lieux-dits of La Guigasse and Pignan, I'm happy to say the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve has come in at the top end of my expectations for it. They produced 6,136 bottles of this elixir, which offers magical aromas of mixed berries, roses and exotic spices. It's full-bodied and weightless at the same time, boasting waves of silky, caressing, seductive tannins and an incredibly long finish. Despite its light touch, it seems assured of evolving over a couple of decades. Sheer gossamer perfection! 100 Points

Jeb Dunnuck
The flagship is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve, the classic blend of 60/40 Grenache and Mourvèdre brought up in demi-muids. Blackberries, currants, black cherries, scorched earth, spice, and beautiful minerality all emerge from this full-bodied beauty that shows the more seamless, elegant style of this estate beautifully. It's more backward, concentrated, and reserved than the Les Quartz release, yet has more density and concentration as well as elegance. I was able to taste this beauty twice and rated it perfect on one occasion and a mere 98 points on another. Give it 3-4 years and enjoy over the following 15-20 years.

Caillou Chateauneuf Quartz
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and velvety, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Quartz is a complete thoroughbred. A blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah, it offers up stunning aromas of crushed stones, tea roses, black cherries and licorice. A powerhouse, loaded with extract, it finishes long and intense, picking up hints of chocolate and star anise. It appears capable of evolving for a couple of stunning decades. 97 Points

Jeb Dunnuck:
A blockbuster in the making is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape les Quartz, which is 100% Grenache from the les Cassanets lieu-dit just beside the estate. Garrigue, kirsch, black raspberries, spice, and incense notes all literally soar from the glass of this sensational red. With full-bodied richness, incredible purity, ultra-fine tannin, and a killer finish, it's going to be one of the wines of the vintage.

Caillou CDR Quartz
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:
Exceeding my prebottling expectations, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Les Quartz is a terrific effort that puts many Châteauneufs to shame. Aromas of crushed stone and raspberries mark the nose of this 8515 Grenache-Syrah blend. It's full-bodied and rich, with hints of chocolaty ripeness balanced by citrus zest on the lengthy finish. 93 Points
Jeb Dunnuck:
The 2016 Côtes du Rhône Quartz offers a rare level of minerality and depth for a Côtes du Rhône, and anyone that loves southern Rhônes should buy bottles of this. Black raspberries, hints of cassis, crushed rock and dried garrigue characteristics flow to a rich, concentrated - even structured - effort that has the telltale elegance and purity of the estate. With ripe tannin, solid freshness and a great, great finish, it's going to drink nicely for a decade. 93 Points

Caillou CDE Garigues
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: A blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah and the rest Mourvèdre and Cinsault, the 2016 Cotes du Rhone Le Bouquet des Garrigues comes from vineyards just outside Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It offers scents of garrigue and mint along with lush cherry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it's peppery and fresh, with silky tannins and a long, licorice-tinged finish. 91 Points

Jeb Dunnuck:
Tasted out of Foudre, the 2016 Côtes du Rhône les Garrigues is another winner. Strawberries, cherries, peppery herbs and hints of garrigue all emerge from this ripe, sexy, seriously layered Côtes du Rhône that has purity, elegance, and depth. Man, for a Côtes du Rhône, this beauty has serious richness. Buy it. 91 Points

Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf de Pape Cuvee Cornelia Constanza 2016
Jeb Dunnuck 98 Points

Another not to be missed Chateauneuf-du-Pape from the 2016 vintage.
Jeb Dunnuck: Pure Grenache brought up in a mix of foudre, old barrels, and stainless steel, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cornelia Constanza is up there with the finest versions of this cuvée to date. Huge notes of cassis, kirsch liqueur, crushed flowers, and incense give way to a rich, powerful, yet graceful wine that has no hard edges and a great finish. It's orgasmic stuff and Grenache lovers shouldn't miss it!
