Grand Cru Riesling from the Super 2014 Vintage

Agape Header
Grand Cru Riesling from the Super 2014 vintage. A bargain!
"The name Agapé means love in Greek, the universal love which we receive in its purest form, with no strings attached. This is our gift from nature and the ultimate essence of winegrowers. Responsible for this metamorphosis, the former endeavours to make it happen with unfailing care and respect." Vincent Sipp
At the heart of the most renowned Alsatian vineyards, the Agapé wine estate spreads out over 10 hectares, of which one third is dedicated to the production of Grands Crus: Schoenenbourg in Riquewihr, Rosacker in Hunawihr and Osterberg in Ribeauvillé. it was established by Vincent Sipp in 2007.

The domaine first came to my attention a couple of years ago whilst visiting Alsace. It seemed that every Michelin-starred restaurant (and many others) were featuring the Agape wines. I tasted numerous wines and was always impressed by the character, typicity and dryness of the wines. Even the 2015 Pinot Gris was dry.

Summer seems to be beckoning and what could be better to drink than great Riesling? And Grand Cru Riesling at that! Especially at the price of Bourgogne from Burgundy.

The three Grand Crus Rieslings, from the great 2014 vintage, we present today come from within a couple of kilometres of each other but the different terroir, just as in Burgundy, make for serious contrasts in style. Together they are a wonderful trio for a comparative tasting.
We don;t have much left and this week we offer the remaining wines at a 15% discount. Less than $60.00 for a Grand Cru is crazy!

Riesling Schoenenbourg Grand Cru 2014
Landed Price $59.95
Special $50.95

Agape Riesling Schoenenbourg Label
Schoenenbourg, which became famous in the Middle Ages, is the flagship of the vineyards at Riquewihr. The greatest wines of this commune are born on this Terroir which help it to gain universal recognition.
Darren Harris: A piercing, lifted nose of minerals, river stones, grapefruit and lime. Very intense. Multi-layered with serious power and line. Rich but not heavy. The finish driven by a long line of acid and a tangy salt character. Is Schoenenbourg the Montrachet of Alsace?

Riesling Rosacker Grand Cru 2014
Landed Price $69.50
Special $59.00
28 bottles left

Agape Riesling Rosacker Label Darren Harris: If the Schoenenboug has the power, the Rosacker has an edge of beguiling fragility or is it electricity. The limestone in the soil beams through with fresh and defined flavours that envelop the palate. Intense yet light on its feet with flowers more than citrus. A hint of rose, or is that just auto suggestion? Sweet herbs, notably mint. A gentle exotic note from the souk? The finish is then surprisingly mineral and long. A real dancer - refined and quite gorgeous. (Trimbach's Clos St-Hune comes from the Rosacker vineyard).

Riesling Osterberg Grand Cru 2014
Landed Price $66.95
Special $56.90
33 bottles left

Agape Riesling Osterberg Label Darren Harris: Pineapple, lime, passionfruit on the nose. Exotic but not tropical. A little rounder than the two other Grand Crus. More fruit weight coats the acidity. After a little time in the glass the palate fines down and the minerality starts to show through. Salty lime nuances come to the fore. Quite a contrast in style, just as in Burgundy the different soil types lending their influence to the wine (here it is marl and sandstone with a little clay). Who said terroir only applies to Burgundy?

Long-Depaquit Moutonne Label
Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis Moutonne Grand Cru Monopole 2016
7 bottles available
Domaine Long-Depaquit are the sole owners of the small (2.34 ha) but revered Grand Cru vineyard MOUTONNE.  It is located at the heart of the amphitheatre straddling the Grand Crus Vaudesir and Les Preuses. It has a south south-west exposure and with its very steep slopes (almost 40 degrees) and kimmeridgian outcrops it is well protected from the north winds.
Spring frosts can still be a problem and the domaine has gone to the unusual lengths of installing environmentally friendly heated electric wires. To combat worms that feed off the grapes there is an electrical system that causes "sexual confusion" in the worms and destroys their ability to reproduce.
The extra care in the vineyard produces a wine of rare character. Moutonne is a Grand Cru Chablis with the style and complexity of a Grand Cru white from the Cote d'Or. It is a wine of intensity and precision, elegance and finesse with extraordinary length. Austen Biss, writer of A Guide to the Wines of Chablis says "They are usually wines of sheer delight".

James Suckling Tasting Report
Very energetic, concentrated and powerful flavours of lime and peaches. A wealth of mouthwatering acidity. Superb depth, purity and a long, stony mineral core. Holds long. Try from 2020. 95 Points

Tim Atkin MW:
Not quite up to the exalted levels of the 2014 bottling - one of the greatest young Chablis I've ever tasted - but this monopoly Grand Cru white, produced from a combination of 95% Vaudésirs and 5% Preuses, is still an impressive 2016, with peachy, stone fruit flavours, creamy lees and some orange zest. 2019-24. 95 Points
Landed Price $299.95
Pre Arrival Price $254.95
