"The Montrachet of Chablis" Moutonne 2015. Tim Atkin MW 96 Points! Very Limited

Long-Depaquit Moutonne 2015 Header
A high tech vineyard!
A wine of "sheer delight"!
his remarkably tactile wine boasts outstanding potential.

Domaine Long-Depaquit are the sole owners of the small (2.34 ha) but revered Grand Cru vineyard MOUTONNE.
It is located at the heart of the amphitheatre straddling the Grand Crus Vaudesir and Les Preuses. It has a south south-west exposure and with its very steep slopes (almost 40 degrees) and kimmeridgian outcrops it is well protected from the north winds.

Spring frosts can still be a problem and the domaine has gone to the unusual lengths of installing environmentally friendly heated electric wires. To combat worms that feed off the grapes there is an electrical system that causes "sexual confusion" in the worms and destroys their ability to reproduce.
The extra care in the vineyard produces a wine of rare character. Moutonne is a Grand Cru Chablis with the style and complexity of a Grand Cru white from the Cote d'Or. It is a wine of intensity and precision, elegance and finesse with extraordinary length. Austen Biss, writer of A Guide to the Wines of Chablis says "They are usually wines of sheer delight".

Today we present the 2015 vintage of this super cuvee.

Domaine Long-Depaquit are in Tim Atkin MW's Top 25 producers. At the very top of the tree is the Grand Cru Moutonne which Tim Atkin MW describes as "the Montrachet of Chablis". 'nuff said!

Long-Depaquit Moutonne Label Tim Atkin MW:
Richer, broader and denser than the 2014, which was one of the whites of the vintage, this so-called "eighth Grand Cru" (a blend of mostly Vaudésir with a little Preuses) is more Côte d'Or like in 2015, with toasty oak and more texture. It's only on the finish that the salinity kicks in. 2018-24. 96 Points

Bill Nanson "The Burgundy Report":
2.3 hectares that sits 95% in Vaudésir and 5% in Preuses.
A little less aromatic volume, but no less attractive - more citrus and a vibrant depth of aroma. More gas. Fine volume, really more mouth-watering, again with a modest cushioning in the texture. Wide, a little more incisive flavour and the first wine with an obvious burst of floral notes in the finish too. This will be excellent, perhaps less exuberant than the Vaudesirs but equal if different. Bravo!
Vinous: Stephen Tanzer:
Pale, bright lemon-yellow. Captivating aromas of pineapple, grilled almond, coconut, iodine and flint. Concentrated, chewy and uncompromisingly dry on entry, then turns a bit silkier in the middle, offering savory flavors of lemon drop, minerals, menthol, mint and hazelnut. Quite smooth in texture for such a powerful grand cru but still youthfully tight. The very long, subtle, slowly mounting finish saturates the palate with dusty extract. This remarkably tactile wine boasts outstanding potential. 93 Points
