The 2016 vintage in the southern Rhone has produced wines of exceptional character. The terrific ripening season and late vintage has made for wines with far more elegance and style than usual, yet still with the character that makes the wines so popular with consumers.
Chateauneuf-du-Pape tends to receive most attention but appellations like Gigondas are gaining more followers as the quality of wines being produced skyrockets.
This morning we offer the 98-Point Gigondas Cuvee Ventabren from Moulin de la Gardette. This special cuvee is a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Cinsault from 80-100 year old vines!
Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media says of the 2016 vintage in Gigondas "Two thousand sixteen in Gigondas, as in the rest of the southern Rhône, experienced a growing season for the record books, yet again - producing expressive, intense, fruit-driven wines of often profound depth as well as energy.

Two thousand sixteen is one of the most consistently outstanding vintages for Gigondas that I have ever tasted.
The best vineyards in Gigondas are located up to 600 meters above sea level, which contributes to the relative freshness and energy of these wines compared to, for example, those of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which only reaches 120 meters at its highest point. During the critical summer months of 2016 the days were sunny and warm, often hot, but the nights were consistently cool, which helped to preserve acidity and allowed ripeness to rise steadily without grape sugars spiking.
One interesting point about the 2016 vintage in Gigondas and, in fact, across the southern Rhône Valley, is that the harvest extended into October, which is later than what has become the norm. I know that when some wine lovers hear the term "late harvest" their immediate fear is that the wines will tend to be overripe and rich. Happily, though, the 2016s are not in that style. Yes, they were made from ripe fruit but no, that fruit wasn't overripe, and the wines almost across the board retain a sense of elegance.

Aside from a handful of high-end, limited-production bottlings from a few producers, Gigondas pricing is rarely at the nosebleed level found in appellations up and down the Rhône. Gigondas is unquestionably one of France's premier wine-growing regions, but pricing is still mostly more than fair given the uniformly high quality standard that the region's producers have been maintaining and building on for the last two decades."

Gardette Ventabren bottle Decanter: From 65 to 115 year old vines with no destemming, aged in old foudres. A discreet but intriguing nose of flowers, fruits and herbs. It's fresh and almost cleansing on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is concentrated but not overly so, with incredible brightness and vivacity leading into a mineral, saline finish that refreshes and lifts the spirits. Perfectly balanced, poised and seriously elegant, this is an absolute joy. It has an unforced and natural demeanour that is the sign of great terroir and a natural, sensitive touch in the cellar. Fantastic, and totally true to Gigondas. 98 Points

Ken Mabry: My visit to Gardette in 2017 consisted of tasting the 2015 vintage, just freshly bottled, and some barrel tasting of the 2016s. Both went well beyond impressive to say the least. The 2016 though had so much depth of flavor, it is no surprise that Jean-Baptiste Meunier, proprietor of Gardette, declared it the best vintage he has ever made. This past March, I returned to taste the now bottled 2016s and barrel taste the 2017s (also impressive but something we'll examine next year when those wines are ready). Jaw-dropping was my reaction. The Cuvee Ventabren had such power and weight behind it but extraordinary balance. It was a new benchmark rivaling the top cuvees from Saint-Cosme (Jean-Baptiste's dear friend) for a fraction of the price. The Ventabren is definitely cellar-worthy with its beguiling spice box nose and perfume of garrigue and incense. Deep blackberry fruit comes in waves accented by the panoply of those surrounding aromas. The Ventabren is not a hedonistic style outright but one that is more savory and spicy capturing what makes the region so different from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. I often find myself relishing the wines of Gigondas more than the CDPs, not just because they represent greater value but they can match the quality of Chateauneuf without losing a step.
The wine is so new we haven't had time to add it to our website. To order please email darren@grandmillesime.com.au or telephone (03) 9326 5737.

Caillopu Chateauneuf Reserve

Brilliant 2016's from Le Clos du Caillou
Almost Gone!
More great reviews added

The 2016 vintage in Chateauneuf-du-Pape is going to be remembered as one of the greats.

There are many fine wines but few as highly rated as those from Le Clos du Caillou.

Their Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Reserve 2016 has scores of 97, 96-100 and 98-100!

Rhone expert Jeb Dunnuck says of Le Clos du Caillou "Unquestionably, some of my favorite wines in the world come from the estate of Sylvie Vacheron, who has the incredibly talented Bruno Gaspard as well as consultant Philippe Cambie at the helm in the vineyards and cellars. Located in the eastern region of the appellation, south of Beaucastel, and covering a tiny 25 acres, they produce a bevy of Côtes du Rhônes as well as a similar lineup of Châteauneuf-du-Papes. I would classify these wines as quasi-modern as the wines are mostly destemmed, and they do utilize newer demi-muids, yet these are pure, classic Southern Rhône wines that are simply loaded with character. In addition, while the style has undeniably changed to one of more elegance and finesse, these latest 2016s and 2017s pack serious oomph and power."

Our 2016's are on the way from France and remaining stocks are very low indeed.
