Super 2013's from Barolo and Barbaresco

Super 2013 Barolo Header
A super selection of Barolo and Barbaresco from the great 2013 vintage

The 2013 vintage produced a plethora of beautiful wines. Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media stated "a cool growing season and late harvest produced gorgeous Barolos with striking aromatics, silky tannins, sculpted, vibrant fruit and mid-weight structures."

He goes on to say "The 2013 Barolos generally possess striking aromatics, silky tannins that are the result of a long growing season, sculpted, vibrant fruit and mid-weight structures. When the 2013s were younger, I thought they would turn out along the lines of the 2010s, but over the last year in particular, many 2013s have acquired a level of textural finesse and grace that is truly remarkable. In many cases, the 2013s remind me of the 2008s, but with more depth, better balance and more consistency. If that sounds appealing, well, it is. Overall, the 2013s are Barolos that speak to finesse above all else. These are wines that will hold considerable appeal to readers who enjoy classically built wines. The 2013s have a good bit of supporting structure, but not the explosiveness or austerity found in vintages such as 2006 or 2010. I don't think the 2013 quite reaches the sheer thrill factor of 2010, but it comes very close."

Today we present a lovely range of highly rated Barolo and Barbaresco at appealing prices. If you love top Italian wines you should jump all over these.
Monchiero Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2013
Special $112.50

Monchiero is nestled in the picturesque commune of Castiglione Falletto in the Barolo region. The terroir here is amongst some of the greatest you will find in all of Piedmont. Monchiero have a superb parcel of Rocche di Castiglione cru in Castiglione Falletto. These are ultra-traditional terroir driven wines of the highest order

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front: Beautiful aromatic herb and floral perfume here, red fruits, crushed rocks, plenty of spice, liquorice root and orange peel. Medium bodied, but dense and powerful, with packed down stony tannin, fresh acidity, layers of spice and amaro herbs, cherry and red fruits, and this soaring precise finish dusted with smashed rock tannin. Great wine. Transparent. Will age for decades. 96 Points
Monchiero Barolo Roere di Santa Maria 2013
Special $99.95

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front:
Dusty and spicy, a bit of liquorice, cherry pie and dried flowers. Medium bodied, firm trail of dry and dusty tannin, almost peppery feel, red fruit, ample flavour, and sticky tannin landing on a finish of good length and red fruited succulence. Needs time. Potential here. 94 Points

Paitin Barbaresco Sori Paitin Serraboella 2013
Special $129.50
The Estate history started in 1796 when Benedetto Elia purchased it from Luigi Pellissero the farmstead with outlying wine cellar and vineyards. His son Giuseppe extended later vineyards and acquired the underground cellar, which dates back to XV century.
The wines in recent years have enjoyed a wonderful renaissance, in fact their quality has never been any higher and there is a purity and elegance in recent releases that make Paitin a top tier maker in the Langhe.

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front:  Deep, brooding style for a Barbaresco with dark cherry, spice, suede and submerged floral and dried herb notes. Medium bodied, but tense and well-packed, has a kind of high cocoa dark chocolate bitterness and flavour, suede tannin and savoury almost ferrous thing going on, and a finish that's long and stretched out by tannin and juicy liquorice. Wonderful wine. Needs a huge decant if doing a 'road test', or just leave it alone for quite a few years. 95 Points

Podere Ruggeri Corsini Barolo Bussia 2013
Special $94.95

The Ruggeri Corsini estate was founded in 1995 by Loredana Addari and Nicola Argamante who share a passion for great wines and a commitment to quality.
The estate is fairly small and the vineyards cover only 10 hectares but are comprised of great plots of old vines, including in the famed Bussia Cru. Their delightful Bricco San Pietro cru Barolo has been a long favourite of ours.

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front: Rugged. Potent. Powerful. Liquorice, dark cherry, sage and spice, squeezed orange peel perfume. Full bodied, plush deep fruit laced with fleshy firm tannin, red fruits and amaro herbs, minerally black tea tannin stamps its authority out on the long fresh finish. There's a touch of oak spice here as a young wine, but nothing untoward, and already meshing with the bold fruit. Drink 2020-2033+. 94+ Points

Podere Ruggeri Corsini Barolo Commune di Monforte 2013
Special $72.95

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front: Quite a distinct polished cedar smell, aniseed, cherry, menthol. Medium bodied, tightly wound, crunch of acidity, red fruits and cherry, black tea tannin and flavour, and a pretty long finish. Needs a few more years yet. 91+ Points

Musso Barolo Pora Reserva 2013
Special $112.50

The Musso winery was founded in 1929 and coincides with one of the most critical moments of the Italian economy and the world, the year of the "Great Depression" Sebastiano Musso, born in 1906, did not lose heart.

Valter Musso, a young winemaker, joined the family winery in the mid-eighties, today is a mature man and head of the winery, overseeing the responsibilities in the vineyard and the winery to produce quality wine.

Today Musso make wonderful Barbaresco from Rio Sordo and Pora crus and many other beautifully crafted wines.

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front: Cherry essence here, baking spices, liquorice, a musk and rose perfume. Medium bodied, fresh and lithe, with gentle brick dust tannin, a pleasing purity to the flavour profile, and a long earthy/spicy finish, and something that makes me think of Earl Grey tea. Shows the clarity and muscularity of the wonderful 2013 vintage to great effect. The finish is compelling. 95+ Points

Nada Fiorenzo Barbaresco Montaribaldi 2013
Special $129.50

The history of Fiorenzo Nada starts in the late 1950s when Fiorenzo inherited a small plot in Treiso. Initially, like many makers in the Langhe, Fiorenzo made bulk wines for restaurants and sold grapes to other producers. The beginning of the Estate as we know it was when Fiorenzo's son Bruno began the journey to develop their own cellars and commenced production expressing the terroir of their wonderful vineyards.

With each passing year the Estate embraced continuous improvement to the point where their wines are now world class.
Bruno & Danilo now produce many outstanding wines from Manzola, Rombone and more recently Montaribaldi crus. The latter an MGA in Barbaresco not Treiso.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous: An addition to the range, the 2013 Barbaresco Montaribaldi is magnificent. Dark spices, lavender, sage, menthol and dark cherries are front and center. Large-scaled, ample and super-expressive, the Montaribaldi captures the power and intensity of this site. Sweet mentholated notes round out the finish. What a gorgeous wine this is. The 2013 spent two full years in cask. It needs time to shed some tannin, but it is fabulous even at this early stage. 96 Points
Nada Fiorenzo Barbaresco Rombone 2013
Special $125.50

Antonio Galloni, Vinous: Nada's flagship Barbaresco Rombone is superb in 2013. Translucent and weightless, the intensity of Rombone comes through in an especially understated voice relative to the more explosive personality this wine usually shows. Exotic spice and mentholated notes round out the dark, balsamic-inflected notes. The Rombone spent one year in French oak and a second year in cask. In this vintage, the Rombone also comes across as a bit less modern in interpretation than in the past. 94 Points

Nada Fiorenzo Barbaresco Manzola 2013
Special $102.50

Antonio Galloni, Vinous: The 2013 Barbaresco Manzola is soft, succulent and inviting for a young Barbaresco. Mid-weight, gracious and supple, the 2013 speaks to balance above all else. High-toned aromatics meld into a core of sweet red cherry, chalk, mint, pine, tobacco and white pepper. This is the most feminine and gracious Barbaresco in Nada's range. In 2013, the Manzola is pure finesse. 94 Points

Castello di Verduno Barolo Massara 2013
Special $135.95

Castello di Verduno is a traditional producer in the envious position of having wonderful holdings of Monvigliero & Massara crus in Barolo (Verduno) and Rabaja & Faset crus in Barbaresco. They are also specialists in the production of Pelaverga - making it as a white, red and a sparkling.
The wines crafted by Mario Andrion have amazing freshness and clarity.

Jancis Robinson:
Verduno.Tasted blind. Developing mid ruby with orange tinges. Fragrant raspberry nose with a little lift and with hints of Moroccan leather. Plenty of linear acidity and fragrant shy fruit. Rather austere for the moment yet very compelling
. 17+/20

Castello di Verduno Babaresco 2013
Special $78.50

Jancis Robinson:
Quite pale ruby with a watery, orange-tinged rim. Earthy and tight nose that is a little brooding but truly Nebbiolo. Real focus on the palate with plenty of raspberry and cranberry fruit. Lifted, fresh and with a polished, muscular tannic grip. Quite irresistible already, but needs food to mitigate the high acidity.
17/20
